GodSpeed(R) Rapid Bible Search Program
Supplemental Information on GS version 881114
November 14, 1988
If this product contains NIV scripture, scriptures are quoted by
permission. Quotations designated (NIV) are from THE HOLY BIBLE:
"NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION". Copyright 1973, 1978, 1984 by the
International Bible Society. All rights reserved.
Used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.
A menu bar appears when you run GODSPEED (or just the command GS). Just
press the letter as prompted: H for Help, F for Find, X for eXit, up or
down arrows, or PgUp or PgDn to go right into the text. You MUST use the
F key to enter words or phrases or verse references. You may use the
&(book) feature as described in the manual and help screens, as long as
you enter F before each such operation. You may then freely page forward
and backward through the text. The Help screen gives examples.
You may direct verses from the display to an output file. Press the Ins
key (usually the "0" on the number-pad on your keyboard). You will be
asked for a file name. If you just press Enter, the file is REPORT.TXT.
The top verse goes into the file and the screen advances by one verse.
If the output file already exists you will be given the option of adding
on to the end of it (appending) or clearing the file to start from
scratch (overwriting), or reentering the name, or ESC to cancel. Each
subsequent operation of the Ins or "P" key will append the new verse at
the top of the screen. If you wish to begin writing to a different
output file, first press the End key, then the next time you press the
Ins key, you will again be asked for a file name.
The screen will instantly give you a page full of words from the
vocabulary from which to choose if you enter a word that is not found in
the Bible. You may then select any word from the Bible using the cursor
keys to move through the entire vocabulary.
The Map feature displays the number of occurrences of the word or
combination words in your search. A table of the 66 books appears,
tabulated with the number of selected verses in each book. A normalized
density is calculated by finding the most dense occurrence of the word
or combination of words, and setting its ratio to 100. All other books
are then more easily compared with the most dense.
In 1988 we first released GodSpeed with an integral cross-reference
database for the Proverbs and the New Testament (nearly 200,000 cross-
references)! Position your favorite verse at the top of the screen, and
hit R. The referenced verse remains at the top, and instantly more than
a dozen cross-reference scriptures (on the average) from the whole Bible
are available. To return to regular word and verse searches, or to
prepare for an additional cross-reference search, close the reference
window by pressing the F or R key again. This allows you to easily
check up on the references to a reference, and so on.
You may now view search matches in context. After a word-search or
cross-reference request, press "*" (asterisk). The top verse moves down
to appear in context. You may then review the context to your heart's
content. If you want to see the next match in context, press "+" (plus
key). Likewise "-" (minus key) will go back to the previous match in
context. "*" again toggles back to matches only. These keys are easy
to use, next to the PgUp / PgDn keys on most keyboards. Using Find or
Ref functions resets to a search-results-only display.
COMMAND-LINE OPTIONS:
"GS S" on a color system will slow the display to prevent "flicker."
"GS R" "Red-letter disable" Add an R to put Jesus' words in braces.
Without the R, Jesus' words will be underlined on a monochrome system or
red on a color system (it may be necessary to run "MODE CO80").
"GS W" redirects output through BIOS devices and is intended to support
semi-compatibles and to operate under Microsoft(R) Windows(R). We are
awaiting feedback from users as to whether this feature works properly.
"GS 2" will load the Tandy 2000 display adapter attributes. Tandy 2000
video memory is dynamically addressed depending on system memory. Use
this option ONLY on a Tandy 2000 or unpredictable results may occur.
"GS M" activates our latest and greatest feature. Many call it "TSR"
or "memory resident mode," which refers to a special way to run
GodSpeed(R) so that it stays in memory, ready for instant access while
you run another program, such as your wordprocessor. This has been
tested with WordPerfect, WordStar, PC-Write, (and even ChiWriter in
Monochrome Graphics mode) with great success. It allows you to pull
scripture into your text without leaving your wordprocessor.
You may combine options, such as "GS SM" if you want Suppress flicker,
and Memory resident.
When GodSpeed is loaded memory resident, a message at the bottom of the
screen tells you what "hotkey" to use (key combination to press to
recall GodSpeed). This is set to Control-Tab at the factory, but you
may change the setting by running COLORMEN.
To recall GodSpeed, press and hold the control key, and hit the tab key.
If this is the first time you have pressed the hotkey, Genesis 1:1 will
appear. Hit "X" to return to your application. It is not wise to
repeat this procedure from DOS; you should be inside your wordprocessor.
Hit the hotkey again with no keys in between to retrieve the verse. It
will begin appearing on your wordprocessor screen as if you typed it in!
If you have typed a verse reference into your wordprocessor, such as
"rev 22 21", when Ctrl-Tab is pressed, GodSpeed will not pop up.
Instead, the verse text will replace the reference.
If Control-Tab is pressed again, with no other keys in between, GodSpeed
retrieves the next verse as would have been present in GodSpeed screen.
GodSpeed requires about 175K of RAM, so you may need to remove it from
memory again to run large programs such as Symphony. If other resident
programs were loaded after GodSpeed, they should be removed first. You
may then release GodSpeed from memory by typing "GS M" again.
Prior releases of GodSpeed lacked a "print" feature, deferring to the
versatility of the personal computer family. Most users have installed
a wordprocessor which allows the greatest possible flexibility in
printing text while requiring the least additional learning effort. The
PC family also allows "Shift-PrtSc," a special key combination which
prints the entire screen, which is 92% scripture.
However, responding to several requests from users, you may now print
quickly and easily without leaving the GodSpeed environment.
Press the Ins key (usually the "0" on the number-pad on your keyboard),
or "P" key, as if you intended to use the above "REPORT.TXT" method.
When asked for a file name, enter "PRN" for standard printer device. If
you have more than one printer, or a serial printer, you may use their
legitimate device names: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1 and COM2. (Use of the
COM ports usually requires prior use of your wordprocessor or MODE.COM
supplied with DOS to prepare settings that correspond to your printer).
After typing "PRN" (or other device name) and pressing enter, the top
verse is immediately printed, and the screen advances by one verse. You
may then position the next verse to be printed to the top of the screen
and press the "Ins" or "P" key again.
Use COLORMEN to change color, display, "HotKey" for memory-resident and
printer margins and other settings.
A setting of zero (0) columns is used to send no carriage returns except
at the end of a verse. This is useful for most wordprocessors such as
PC-Write, Sprint, WordPerfect and WordStar which have "auto word-wrap"
settings, intended for continuous typing without carriage returns. Some
wordprocessors automatically place the carriage returns, others require
positioning the cursor to the beginning of the verse and pressing an
additional key (Control-B in WordStar).
You may adjust "File Output (eg. REPORT.TXT)" to be more suitable for
printing by setting to 70 to 80 columns. Some printers cannot print in
the 80th column except they automatically "wrap around" to the next
line, which will cause a blank line in the middle of the verse. If your
printer does this, simply reduce setting to 79 columns.
You may adjust "WordProcessor (TSR mode)" in case your wordprocessor
does not have "auto word-wrap" setting, or if you wish to produce a
narrower column of text to distinguish Scripture from the rest of your
text. Some wordprocessors such as pfs:First Choice may have difficulty
with a line longer than 255 columns.
God Bless you as you study His word.
