CHAPTER 5
JOIN UP
There are two basic ways to get an education as a result of
military service. First, you can get a college education by promising
to serve a certain number of years in the military after you complete
your education. Second, you can take advantage of numerous programs
that provide educational benefits to veterans who have already served
in the military.
Before You Join Up
High school students can join the Reserve Officers Training Corps
(ROTC) to become eligible for one of several programs that help you
attend college. To be accepted into a ROTC unit you need to apply as
a high school sophomore or junior. Your chances of getting in are
better if you have high grades and take part in extracurricular
activities where you can demonstrate your leadership abilities. You
can contact your local ROTC unit, your high school counselor, or the
headquarters for the branch of service you want to enlist in. The
addresses for the various headquarters and the current requirements
are:
Air Force ROTC
Maxwell Air Force Base
Maxwell, Al. 36112
To take part in this program you must be a U.S. citizen between
the ages of 17 and 21 with a grade point average of at least 2.5. You
need to participate in the ROTC program at the college you go to and
take other courses related to your future military service. After you
graduate from college you need to serve at least four years on active
duty with the Air Force.

After You Join Up
The federal government has a program you can take part in as soon
as you enlist in the military. It's called the New G.I. Bill. When
you join up the government will agree to contribute to an educational
fund just for you. How much they put into the fund is based on how
much you contribute and your length of service. When your term of
service is over you can use this money to finance a college education.
