  10.      The federal  government has  two major grant programs for college
  11.  
  12. students who can prove they are financially needy.  These programs are
  13.  
  14. designed to  help students from lower income families to get a college
  15.  
  16. education.
  17.  
  18.      The largest  one is the Pell Grant.  Over 3 million undergraduate
  19.  
  20. students receive money from this fund every year.  In theory, everyone
  21.  
  22. who needs  financial help  is supposed to be able to get it from these
  23.  
  24. funds.   In reality, however, if you don't apply early, there's a good
  25.  
  26. chance the money will be used up before your application is processed.
  27.  
  28. You can  apply for  a Pell  Grant by  filling out  an Application  for
  29.  
  30. Federal Student  Aid.   This form  is available  from your high school
  31.  
  32. counselor.   To apply  you need  to send in your completed form before
  33.  
  34. May 1 of your senior year in high school.
  35.  
  36.      The Supplemental  Education Opportunity  Grant (SEOG) is given to
  37.  
  38. various colleges  by the  government.  The college then has this extra
  39.  
  40. money to  give to  needy undergraduate students.  When you apply for a
  41.  
  42. Pell Grant you automatically are considered for the SEOG as well.
  43.  
  44.      The advantages  of both  of these  programs  are  that  they  are
  45.  
  46. available throughout the country, and can be used to attend almost any
  47.  
  48. college or  university.   The disadvantages,  of course,  are that you
  49.  
  50. have to prove that you are financially needy, you have to be a citizen
  51.  
  52. of the  United States  and have  a social  security card, and men must
  53.  
  54. register with the Selective Service.
  55.  
  56.      If your  high school  counselor can't give you enough information
  57.  
  58. on these and other federal loan programs you can get in touch with the
  59.  
  60. state agency  that is in charge.  A few states don't have this kind of
  61.  
  62. department to  keep track of federal loan programs, but most do.  Here
  63.
