SwimBase
--------------------------
Version 1.60

Last updated: March, 1992
This document assumes that you are working with the distribution disk
received when you registered your SwimBase package or are setting up the
evaluation version after following the instructions in the file SETUP.DOC
Program Setup
_____________
One program file and 3 data files are necessary to use this
program. SWIM.EXE is the program file and EVENT.DTA, EVENT.ORD and
DEFAULT.DTA are the data files. SWIM.EXE is the main program.
The first time SWIM.EXE is run the event data files, EVENT.DTA
and EVENT.ORD, and the setup preferences data file, DEFAULT.DTA, will
be created in the same directory as SWIM.EXE unless they already
exist. See the event setup data form for more information about the
event file. See the default data form for more information about your
preferences.
In order to setup the program follow the steps within the section
that corresponds to your hardware configuration.
Hard Disk System Installation
_____________________________
From the root directory 'C:\'
1. MKDIR C:\SWIMDATA
Substitute your drive letter for the C in the path name if
your hard drive isn't C. The subdirectory name SWIMDATA can be
anything you are comfortable with.
2. CD C:\SWIMDATA
Use the name of the directory created in step 1 above.
3. Put distribution disk in floppy drive A:
4. COPY A:\*.*
5. Start program by typing SWIM
If you update the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
include the directory created in step 1 then you will be able to start
and run SwimBase from any prompt by typing SWIM. If you do not then
you will need to change directory (CD) to the C:\SWIMDATA before
starting SwimBase.
If you prefer to keep your program files in one directory and
your data files in another you can do this by putting the SWIM.EXE and
data files in your program directory and creating a separate data
directory. This data directory can be any legitimate DOS directory
name. Once you start SwimBase you will need to use the Set or Change
Defaults option to set the data directory. Note that the 3 system data
files, EVENT.DTA, EVENT.ORD and DEFAULT.DTA should remain in the same
directory as SWIM.EXE.
Recommended Hard Disk Setup
___________________________
If disk space is not limited the program file, SWIM.EXE, along
with the 3 data files should be all in the same subdirectory. This
subdirectory should also be used as the data directory. The simplest
method would be to create a subdirectory C:\SWIMDATA and then copy all
the files into it.
Dual Floppy Disk System Installation
____________________________________
This setup assumes either 2 low density 5 1/4" 360K floppies or a
desire to use separate program and data floppies.
1. Obtain 2 blank, formatted floppies.
Label one as the SwimBase data files. Label the second as the
SwimBase program files.
2. Make a DISKCOPY of the program distribution disk and then use that
disk to run the program.
3. DISKCOPY A: A:
Follow the prompts, use the SwimBase program disk as the
destination
4. Put the original in a safe place.
5. Put the Program files disk in drive A: and the data files disk in
drive B:.
6. Start the program by typing A:\SWIM.
7. Answer N to 'Directory Open Failure' requestor.
8. Enter a path (directory) for the data disk, 'B:\SWIMDATA' is
recommended
9. Be sure the data disk is in drive B: and press return.
10. Press Y to create directory.
11. When program starts select 'Set or Change Defaults' and enter the
directory from step 8 as the data PATH default.
12. Each time you are ready to use the program place the program disk
in drive A: and the data disk in drive B: and then type A:\SWIM.
Single Floppy Disk System Installation
______________________________________
Use this setup for a single floppy system or if you wish to keep
both program and data files on the same disk. Note that to keep all
files on the same disk it must have a minimum capacity of 720K.
1. Obtain a blank floppy and make a copy of the original program disk.
2. DISKCOPY A: A:
3. Put the original in a safe place.
4. Put the copy in drive A: and start the program by entering A:\SWIM
5. Answer N to 'Directory Open Failure' requestor.
6. Enter a path (directory) for the data disk, 'A:\SWIMDATA' is
recommended
7. Press return in response to the 'Place Data disk in Drive'
requestor.
10. Press Y to create directory.
11. When program starts select 'Set or Change Defaults' and enter the
directory from step 6 as the data PATH default.
12. Each time you are ready to use the program place the disk in drive
A: enter A:\SWIM
