BAKER SOLITAIRE
Layout
Using a standard deck of fifty-two cards, deal the entire deck
face up to form an array of eight board columns (horizontal) by
six board rows (vertical). Deal the remaining four cards
starting on the seventh row, first column. The finished layout
will have seven cards each in columns one through four, and six
cards each in columns five through eight. Four playoff cells
are located above the board columns and four temporary cells are
located below the board columns. Cards are dealt from left
to right with each row overlapping the row above.
Rules
The object of the game is to place on each playoff cell, in
consecutive order, starting with the ace, all thirteen cards of
the same suit. The game is won only when all four playoff cells
are filled. During the course of play, a single card may be
placed on any one of the four temporary cells. The following
rules must be adhered to:
1 - Only one card may be moved at a time.
2 - Only the bottom card may be moved from any board
column.
3 - The first card to be played on any playoff cell must be an
ace, followed by the next higher card in suit until the king is
reached in each playoff cell. These cards may come from the
exposed cards in the board columns or from the temporary cells.
4 - An uncovered card in a board column or temporary cell may be
moved to another board column as long as it is placed on the
next high card of the same suit.
5 - Any card may be moved to a temporary cell and remain there
until you wish to move it. Cards in a temporary cell may be
either moved to a board cell or to a playoff cell.
6 - If a board column becomes empty, any movable card may be
placed in that position as a new starting card for that column.
This card may come from either a temporary cell or another board
column.
7 - You are not allowed to move an exposed card in a temporary
cell to another temporary cell.
Object
Depending on the game order, some games will be easier than
others to win. At times, other games may be impossible to win.
The object is not only to fill the playoff cells with all the
cards, but to do so in the least amount of moves.
- 2 -
Variations
By removing one, two or three suits from the full deck, you may
create three games of a lower order. A full deck game is known
as an Order 4 game. Discarding one suit is an Order 3 game.
Playing with two suits, an Order 2 game. An Order 1 game would
be played using only one suit of the four.
The board columns and layout, temporary cells and playoff cell
will vary depending on which of the Order games is being played.
The following is a list of the board columns, temporary cells
and playoff cells in relation to the Order game:
ORDER BOARD COLUMNS TEMPORARY CELLS PLAYOFF CELLS
4 8 4 4
3 7 3 3
2 6 2 2
1 5 1 1
Each temporary cell may be changed to hold from one to two
cards, depending on the Order. The Registered version will
allow up to four cards. You will not be allowed to place more
cards in the temporary cell than the Order being played.
Temporary cells in the Order 4 game may be changed to hold from
one to two cards, one to four on the Registered version.
Temporary cells in the Order 3 game may be changed to hold from
one to three cards, etc.
The empty spaces created in the board columns during play may be
changed to hold any card, king's only, or no cards at all.
