Note: This documentation sucks.... if you want just read the section
on setting up your stats then type HELP once you are in the dungeon.
Introduction
-------------
This is a real-time adventure game written in Turbo Pascal. It was
written for people who like fast, scary action... yet don't want to pay a
fortune to log on to a Multiplayer game such as Stellar Emperor. Unlike
many Dungeon type games, it does not assume that once you have entered
combat with a monster you MUST fight to the death. Instead, you always have
the option to run and heal yourself (provided you are a fast typist!) Also,
whenever you drop an object there is a danger a monster will come into the
room and pick it up! Since the game is in real time, one cannot leave his
character sitting in a room for very long without something coming in and
killing him! The advantage of all this is that the game usually moves very
fast and keeps you on the edge of your seat... Someone who is a fast typist
and learns combat techniques can advance in experience very quickly. Like
an arcade game in a few respects, the object of the game is to accumulate as
many points as possible. Score is based on the amount of gold you are
carrying and the number of experience points you have acquired. (Experience
is obtained by killing monsters) Once you have died, or decided you have
gained enough experience to RETIRE.. the game will save your score (if it
is high enough) in a high score file along with the name and experience level
of your character.
Starting Your Character
-----------------------
Initially, you will be presented with a stats page where you can
distribute a certain number of points among the various attributes of
your character. Use the up and down arrows to move to the statistic you
wish to add or subtract points from; then use the + and - keys to either
add or subtract points. For example, if it says at the bottom of the
screen you have 7 points which are free to be distributed and you
character's initial strength is at 10, you can use up and down arrow to
move the highlighted area on top of strength.. and then increase it as
much as you would like up to the 7 points you have to distribute. You
cannot subtract points beneath the initial value, however. If this seems
a tad bit confusing.. it should become pretty obvious when the program is
actually run. I was never one to read documentation before I ran the
program anyhow ;-). Now for what the various attributes do:
Dexterity: Dexterity is useful for either a thief or a ninja. It
determines the number of times your weapon strikes the enemy,
and if it is over 17 your character will regenerate hit points
when he moves from room to room.
Strength: Strength is useful for either a Barbarian or a Warrior. It
determines the damage that your weapon does when it strikes the
enemy (The damage advantage of the weapon is also important).
If the characters strength is over 17 he will regrow hitpoints
if he sits in the same place doing nothing (Resting).
Intelligence: Intelligence is useful for either a Sorceror or a Magic
user. It determines the damage that a spell does, as well as
the probability of a given spell working. Someone with a low
intelligence (Such as a Barbarian) will almost never get a spell
to work.
Hitpoints: Hitpoints determine the amount of damage a character can take
before he dies. Each character starts out with about 20..
barbarians and warriors gain more hitpoints each level they
advance than does a magic user or a thief. Hitpoints can be
regenerated by a spell, by moving around (Dex>17) or by sitting
around doing nothing (Str>17). Thus, each class of character
has its own particular way of repairing damage to itself.
Mana: Mana determines the number of spells a character can cast
before his magical ability is worn out. Magical ability
regenerates at a rate proportional to the size of a characters
intelligence. Each spell has a certain minimum mana needed to
cast it. Thus, a level I character will be presented with only
one or two spells to cast.. whereas a level 10 character might
have ten or more spells to cast.
Character Types
---------------
After a character chooses his dexterity, intelligence, and strength..
a page will come up asking him to choose what type of profession he would
like. The available ones are.. Thief, Wizard (Magic User), Sorceror,
Barbarian, Ninja, and Warrior. Here are their pros and cons:
Warrior: A reasonably strong character with marginal intelligence
and reasonably good dexterity. He fights well but is mediocre
at defusing chests and fairly poor at casting spells.
Barbarian: A very strong character with negligible intelligence and
marginal dexterity. He hits with alot of damage but is bad
at defusing chests and horrible at casting spells.
Ninja: A very dextrous character with moderate intelligence and
low strength. He can attack many times but does not do a
tremendous amount of damage. He is very good at defusing
chests, yet mediocre at casting spells.
Thief: A fairly dextrous character with low intelligence and
mediocre strength. He can attack many times but does
limited damage... like the Ninja he is good at defusing
chests yet pretty bad at casting spells.
Mage: An intelligent character with low strength and marginal
dexterity. He can cast spells with a reasonable amount of
power, yet is fairly bad at hand to hand combat and mediocre
at defusing chests.
Sorceror: A highly intelligent character with negligible strength and
low dexterity. He is great at casting spells but pretty
bad at other things.
The Maze
--------
The game takes place in a randomly generated... theoretically
infinite level maze. The deeper you go in the maze, the tougher the
monsters and the more rewarding the treasures you will find. In order
to explore deeper within the dungeon, however, your character must have
acquired enough experience to go down in depth. Each level of the maze
represents 50 vertical feet. Thus, level 1 is 50 feet below ground,
level 2 is 100 feet, level 3 is 150 feet.. etc. Advancement to different
levels of the maze is accomplished by magic... It is a simple spell to
cast and thus even Warriors or Barbarians can move from level to level
without difficulty (Provided they have enough experience points).
Throughout each level of the maze is strewn gold, gems, treasures, chests,
potions, staffs, swords, shields, and armor. Also, if you go up when
at a depth of 50 feet, you will be transported to the town. At the
town, it is possible to buy certain items. These will vary depending
upon the dungeon you are exploring. Should you accidentally lose an
item, the town will reclaim it and put it back up for sale. Also, it
is possible to trade gold pieces for experience at the town level.
(Much of this is self explanatory when the game is run... the town is
menu oriented). Instead of purchasing equipment at the outset of the
game, it is necessary to either find gold in the dungeon and buy it at
the town.. or to find various pieces of equipment within the dungeon
itself. The commands which allow your character to move vertically up
or down 50 feet are "+" to go up and "-" to go down.
Gaining Experience
------------------
Approximately every time your character doubles his experience
points (Things vary slightly with the type of character chosen... Wizards
move up slower than do Warriors for example) he gains one level of
experience and acquires a new title. The title of your character is
displayed in the status line on top of the screen. Also, your character
will gain or lose (usually gain) intelligence, hitpoints, mana, dexterity,
and strength for each level he advances.
The Commands
------------
Here is an overview of the major commands in the game.... you can
see what any command does while in the game by typing "help". Here
goes:
(+): Teleport 50 feet upwards in the maze.
(-): Teleport 50 feet downwards in the maze.
(N)orth: Move your Character North in the maze.
(S)outh: Move your Character South in the maze.
(E)ast: Move your Character East in the maze.
(W)est: Move your Character West in the maze.
(T)ake: This command will give you a menu from 1 to ? .. giving
the objects in the room you are currently in. To pick
up an object, simply enter the number of that object in
the list. NOTE: things may happen while this menu is
being displayed! You can still be attacked or a monster can
come in and take all the objects so be quick!
(F)ight: This command will chop at a given monster in the room.
(chosen from a menu if there is more than one monster) It
helps immensely to be wielding a weapon! Note that evil
monsters will attack you even if you never fight them..
(They are hungry little buggers). If you attack a Friendly
Monster his alignment will change to one that is hostile to
you.
(M)agic: This command will throw a spell... If a heal spell is
thrown you will be healed a certain amount. If a combat
spell is thrown it will damage the monster a certain amount.
Note certain spells inflict massive multiple damage to
monsters. Once again, the spell is picked from a menu of
those available to you based on your mana. Like with take
and fight, things still happen while it is waiting for you
to choose a spell so dont wait long!
(CHA)rt: This will display a chart of the various alignments and
the colors associated with them. A yellow monster, for
example, has a maniacal alignment.. A white one has a
friendly one.. etc.
(INV)ent: This command will list the objects your character is
carrying along with their weight. Your character can only
carry up to a certain amount of weight (This increases
with each experience level gained!).
(DRI)nk: A scary command! This will allow you to take a sip out
of any potions you are carrying! Some will not have such
nice effects upon your character!
(USE): This command allows you to utilize the magic powers of
a staff that you are carrying. Certain staffs do massive
damage to monsters, whereas others teleport you.. some
can even kill you!
(OPE)n: This command opens a chest that you are carrying. Note
that you must be carrying a chest in order to open it.
Certain chests contain massive amounts of gold, whereas
others might simply be explosive boobytraps full of junk.
(STA)ts: This command displays most of the relevant information
about your character.. for example, it shows you what armor
he is currently wearing, what shield he is using, what sword
he is wielding.. his armorclass.. the attack and defense
advantages of his current weapon.. how many hitpoints he
has left.. etc.
(ATT)rib: This command shows the current level of dexterity,
intelligence, and strength your character posesses.
(HAL)l: Displays the *HALL OF FAME* (high scores!).
(WIE)ld: Places a weapon that you have in your posession into your
hand for combat purposes.
(SHI)ld: Places a shield that you have in your posession into your
free hand.
(WEA)r: Puts on an article of armor that you are carrying with you.
(NAM)e: Change your Character's name.
(QUI)t: Exit the game without saving your score.
The Dungeon Creator
-------------------
I have added a program that lets the user create his own dungeons.
It is menu oriented and fairly self explanatory.. however I will say a few
important things. The attack advantage determines the effect of a potion.
-2 for an Attack advantage would (say the potion was a dexterity potion)..
subtract 2 from the users dexterity. 2, on the other hand, would add 2 to
his dexterity. For staffs of fire, attack advantage determines the number
of attacks whereas damage determines the damage done.
