Hello:
PC-Gammon is a very easy to play, yet it will provide you with a
challenging oponent. You need two things to play PC-Gammon:
First: an IBM-PC (or compatible) with 128K of memory, Graphics
Card, and MS-DOS V2.0 or higher.
Second: You must like to play Backgammon.
PC-Gammon is completely unprotected. It is suggested that you make
a back-up copy of this diskette, consult your DOS manual on how to
do this.
Installation:
Floppies:
If you only have floppies on your system you have two options:
1. Place the PC-Gammon diskette in Drive A and boot your system,
the game will automatically be run. (See Note)
2. Boot DOS, Place the PC-Gammon diskette in the drive of your choice
and use the MS-DOS command to select that drive (i.e. 'B:'), then
run PC-Gammon by typing "PCGAMMON" at the DOS prompt, e.g.:
B>PCGAMMON
If you have a hard disk:
1. Copy PC-Gammon to the directory of your choice.
2. To run the program, change directory to the directory you
copied the game to and type "PCGAMMON".
Note to floppy users:
If you're graphics card requires the running of some special
program (e.g. a paradise color graphics card and an monochrome
monitor), you will have to edit the autoexec.bat file on the
PC-Gammon floppy to invoke such a program before PC-gammon
is run.
Hard disk users shouldn't have to worry about this, as
you probably already have any special programs automatically
run from the hard disk when you boot.
The Commands:
The PC-Gammon commands are as follows:
H - Help:
Displays a reminder of the available commands.
B - Backup:
Allows you to backup to the beginning of your move.
For instance if you rolled a 6,1 and you played the
the six, and then decided you could have made a
better move, use the B command to back-up to the
beginning of your roll. At the end of your roll the
computer will ask you if you are sure about your
moves. If you don't respond with a 'Y' the computer
will back-up to the beginning of your move. Once you've
answered 'Y' there is no way of going back (that would
be cheating!)
R - Refresh:
If for any reason the board display should become
corrupted the refresh command will redraw the board
for you.
X - Force Move:
If you can't play (i.e. you're on the bar and
can't get off, etc.), type the X key and the
computer will play. If you want the computer to
play first, you can type this key at the beginning
of the game and it will take the first move. If you
have a valid move available and type the X command
the computer will display an appropriately nasty
message about humans always trying to cheat.
P - Play Itself:
If you're bored and have nothing better to do
type this key and you can watch the computer play
itself. It is also useful if you are a novice
to backgammon and wish to watch the computer play
to learn some basic strategies.
F - Forfeit:
If you clearly see you are loosing and you don't want
to hear the snide remarks the computer makes when it
wins, type the F key and the computer will start a
new game. (It will however be scored as a loss for you).
D - Double:
The Double command is used to double the stakes of the
game. Initially neither player owns the doubling cube,
and it's value is set to 1 and it appears in the middle
of the board. Either player may offer to double when the
doubleing cube is in the middle. As soon as one player
offers to double the player who accepts the double gets
posession of the cube and then only he may double. If
either player refuses the double, that player forfeits
the game.
Q - Quit:
When dinners ready or you simply can't tolerate any more
more backgammon, type the Q key and the game will return
you to DOS.
<Space>:
The space bar is used to roll the dice. When it's your
turn to move, hit the space bar to roll the dice. You
can't roll the dice more than once per move.
The dice are rolled at the beginning of each game to
see who goes first (yours is the left die). The player
that wins that roll must use the roll as shown. Additionally
if the first roll is a double, the doubling cube is incremented
to 2, and you roll again to see who goes first.
M - Move:
This is the heart of the commands. How to move your men!
When you hit the M key the computer will display the
prompt "FROM: ". Enter the number corresponding to the
slot you wish to move from (these numbers are displayed
at the top and bottom of the board). The computer will
then prompt you with "How many: ", enter the value of the
die you wish to move. For instance, if your first move
was a 6,1 your commands might look like this:
Command: M From: 12 How many: 6
Command: M From: 17 How many: 1
A few minutes of playing will clarify all this. If you
should enter a bogus move the computer will let you know.
The from prompt will accept a two digit number from
00 (the bar) to 24. If you are entering a 2 digit number
(i.e. 10) the program will automatically advance to the
'How Many: ', prompt after the second digit. If you are
entering a single digit from location (i.e. 1) you can
either precede it with a 0 or use the return or space
keys to signal to the computer you are finished entering
the location you wish to move from. (e.g. "01",
or "1<SP>", or "1<RET>" are all the same).
You can play the dice in any order (i.e. you don't have
to play the first die first).
<ESC> - Escape:
Hitting the escape key will allow you to cancel a
move command in mid stream. You will be returned
to the 'Command: ' prompt. If you enter a move you
you didn't mean to, use the backup command to get
you back to where you were.
If you have any questions regarding the playing of this game, or if
you have any problems with the diskette or installation, you can
write to the above address, or call (802) 933-5133 for customer
support, phone support is only provided to contributing users.
Users are encouraged to call the Black Creek BBS at (802) 933-2417.
The latest version of PC-Gammon will always be available there.
Also, If you know of a BBS which has an older version of PC-Gammon
on it's system, we would appreciate hearing from you so we can
provide the most recent version to that board.
