DOCUMENTATION
We have not written a dBASE III manual on how to use
dBASE commands or how to program. We have left this to the
many fine authors who have written good books on this
subject. Included as part of the help documentation are
any limitations, differences and extension to the dBASE
standard.
We have written a 45 page tutorial that will teach you
most of the other things you need to know on how to use 1
on 1 = 3!!. This tutorial is in a file 3!!_TUT.DOC. Just
print it out on your printer. Then follow its instructions
step by step in order to learn how to use 1 on 1 = 3!!.
There is also a README file. This has the latest
information on 1 on 1 = 3!! and tips on how to better use
1
1 on 1 = 3!!. Please print out this file before you even
try to install 1 on 1 = 3!!.
If you have the PRINT command available -
PRINT README {Enter}
PRINT 3!!_TUT.DOC {Enter}
If you do not have the PRINT command available or you get a
message 'Bad command or file name', try the following:
COPY README PRN {Enter}
after that finishes printing type:
COPY 3!!_TUT.DOC {Enter}
We have also written an extensive 85 page on-line help
system for 1 on 1 = 3!!. This information can be printed
out and used for a manual. For a hard disk system the
instructions for printing this will be found later in this
manual. For a Floppy based system use the same method you
used for printing above.
This on line help will not only assist you with what you
are doing but can also aid you in learning the different
dBASE commands. For every menu item that has a comparable
dBASE command, we give you the syntax for that command.
Also as part of the help system there is a listing of the
syntax for all commands and functions with descriptions of
those that are extensions to standard dBASE.
At any time you may press the {F1} key to get help.
You will be placed in the Help Browse Mode. The
information you get will be based on where you call for
help from. You will have the opportunity from here to
browse through the full help manual. You get out of this
Help Browse Mode by hitting the {Esc} key.
You will then be given the opportunity to choose
various topics of help. Move the light bar to the help
topic you want and hit {Enter}. You can move the light bar
in the following ways:
1. {Home} will move you to the first help topic.
2. {End} will move you to the last help topic.
3. Pressing a letter will move you to the next help
topic that starts with that letter.
2
4. {Up Arrow}, {Down Arrow}, {Right Arrow}, and
{Left Arrow} will move you in the corresponding
direction.
Choosing a topic from the Help Menu will place you
back in the Help Browse Mode. Again, in order to leave the
Help Browse Mode type {Esc}. In order to leave the Help
Mode completely, press the {Esc} key while the list of
topics is on the screen. This will return you to the
place you called help from.
You can get a listing of the help file by choosing
'Documentation' from the opening menu of 1 on 1 = 3!!.
Choosing 'Index' at that point will let you print out the
index for the help file. You will be asked how much you
want to indent the listing from the left hand margin.
Choosing 'Help' will allow you to specify which pages
you want printed from the help file as well as how much you
want the listing indented. We recommend that you print a
couple of pages using different indentations to see what
works best on your printer. If you want all the pages put
in a starting page number of 1 and an ending page number of
999.
While in the Menu Mode you will have the option of
getting on the bottom of your screen one of the following:
1. An eight line Help Window with the syntax for the
comparable dBASE command and an explanation on
how to use the command.
2. An Information Window with such information as
the name of the database, index files, filters,
current record number, records in the database,
record size, output devices active.
3. A Record Window with the data from the current
record.
4. Special Key Windows with listings of the special
keys used for getting around the menu,
positioning the record pointer and getting
information from the database.
5. A Blank Window with just a one line explanation
of the current menu item. This explanation also
appears on the bottom of all but the Help Window.
You may switch among these window any time you are at
a menu item by pressing the {F3} and {F4} keys.
3
GETTING STARTED
Please print out and read the file 'README' that is on
the Command disk #3. This will contain the latest updates
to the documentation. In order to print this look under
documentation
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Your system must have at least 512K of memory. You
must have approximately 450K of free memory. You must have
a hard disk.
Use of disk cache programs may cause problems while
running 1 on 1 = 3!!. If you experience any strange
problems you should remove these.
You must specify in your CONFIG.SYS file a number of
files that is at least 10 greater then you plan to have
open at any time in 1 on 1 = 3!!. The CONFIG.SYS is a
special file that goes in the root directory of your boot
disk. You should have a statement like the following in
your CONFIG.SYS file:
FILES=35
You can check for this by going to your root directory
where the computer booted up to and typing:
TYPE CONFIG.SYS
If files is not equal 35 then change it so it is. If you
get the message:
File not found.
You can create CONFIG.SYS by typing the following:
COPY CON CONFIG.SYS {Enter}
FILES=35 {Enter}
{F6} {Enter}
35 files should be enough for most applications. If
at any time you get a message, too many files open, make
sure your CONFIG.SYS has the above statement in it. If you
have not rebooted you system since changing it try doing
that. If that does not work try increasing the number.
You must reboot your system for the new number to take
effect.
4
IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS LOADING OR RUNNING 1 on 1 = 3!!
REMOVE ALL MEMORY RESIDENT PROGRAMS, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE
FILES=35 IN YOUR CONFIG.SYS FILE, REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER AND
TRY RELOADING AND RUNNING 1 on 1 = 3!!.
This will take care of any problems of memory as well
as conflicts with other programs. You can try reloading
your memory resident programs later to see which one will
work.
HARD DISK INSTALLATION
You will need a minimum of 1,400,000 characters of
free storage to load this software on you hard disk system.
You may delete the following files after the software is
loaded 3!!_TUT.DOC
If you are really short on space you may delete
3!!_HELP.DBF, 3!!_HP1.IDX, 3!!_HP2.IDX. Deleting these
last three files will eliminate the on-line help. This
will lower the amount of storage needed to run 1 on 1 = 3!!
to around 700,000 characters.
RUNNING 1 on 1 = 3!!
You will see in your dBASE III book that you can put
certain commands in a file called CONFIG.DB and these will
set defaults when your program runs. The same is true in
1 on 1 = 3!! except the name of the file is CONFIG.FX.
This file must be kept in the same directory as the
software. Also we have some added commands as noted below:
FILES This will determine the number of files you
can have open at one time. The default is
16 and the maximum is 48.
MVARSIZ This is the amount of memory used to
allocate character strings. We have set
this to 45 to limit the amount of memory
used in the menu mode. For programming you
will be allowed the most lines of code by
setting this to 64, its maximum. This may
cause problems if you are low on available
memory.
MVCOUNT This is the maximum number of memory
variables. We have set this to 512. The
maximum is 3,600.
TEDIT Specifies an external editor to be used when
MODIFY COMMAND is issued.
5
On a hard disk system one of the files is 3!!.bat. If
you put this file somewhere where it is always in your DOS
path or you set up a DOS path to the directory we just
created, then you can run 1 on 1 = 3!! from anywhere by
just typing
3!! {Enter}
If you do not set up this path, then you will have to
be in the \3!! directory to run 1 on 1 = 3!!. In that
case, assuming you are on the right drive you would type
cd \3!! {Enter}
3!! {Enter}
Either way you will be put into the opening menu. You
may choose items by pressing their first letter or using
the arrow keys to move the highlight to the one you want
and then pressing the {Enter} key. You can get help at any
time by pressing the {F1} key.
MENU MODE
Choosing Menu Mode puts you in the easy to use Menu
Mode. How to work here is fully explained in the tutorial
and in the on line help system which has the same
information.
COMMAND AND PROGRAMMING MODES
Command Mode puts you where you can execute commands
or run your dBASE programs. You execute your programs by
typing DO <program name>. The computer will first look for
a file with the extension '.FOX'. This is a program that
has been compiled by the FoxBASE+ compiler. If this file
is not found a file with the extension '.III' is looked
for. This is a modified copy of your program that
1 on 1 = 3!! creates so that it can load and run your
program faster. If it does not find this file it will look
for a file with the extension '.PRG'. If it does not find
that file it will give you an error message.
If 1 on 1 = 3!! does find the '.PRG' file, it will
read it in and create a '.III' file. It will then start
executing your program.
If you make a change in one of your programs you
should delete the corresponding '.III' file. This should
happen automatically if you use MODI COMM <program file
name> from the 1 on 1 = 3!! command mode. If it appears
6
that a change you have made is not taking, try typing
DELETE FILE <program name>.III.
Any extensions, differences or limitations to the
dBASE standard are described in the help documentation.
You can return to the opening menu from the Command
Mode by entering the QUIT or the RETURN commands.
ADMINISTRATION
This mode allows you to tell the computer if you have
a color or monochrome monitor. It will also allow you to
define whether users can update databases or not.
First you will be asked to enter M for monochrome or C
for color. Put in the appropriate letter. Then you will
be asked to enter R for read only and U for update. If you
put in 'R' users will be restricted from using any menu
items that allow updating of databases. Users will not be
allowed to use the Command Mode. If you put in 'U' then
users will have unrestricted use of the program.
X DOS
This will allow you to execute DOS commands. If you
need to execute DOS commands this is a good place to do
it. Once you get into the Menu Mode the program takes a
lot more memory and you may have trouble executing DOS
commands.
Your commands will be stored. Pressing the {Up Arrow}
will get you back previous commands. You may edit them and
execute them again.
DOCUMENTATION
You may print out a listing of this help documentation
and the help index from this menu choice.
Choosing 'Index' at that point will let you print out
the index for the help file. You will be asked how much
you want to indent the listing from the left-hand margin.
Choosing 'Help' will allow you to specify which pages
you want printed from the help file as well as how much you
want the listing indented. We recommend that you print a
couple of pages using different indentations to see what
works best on your printer. If you want all the pages put
in a starting page number of 1 and an ending page number of
999. There should be between 70 to 80 pages.
7
QUIT
This will get you back to DOS.
