I. Introduction
SURVEY POWER can create a survey consisting of single choice,
multiple choice, rank order, and numeric questions. The program
will print the survey, allow recording of survey responses, perform
complete, demographic, and correlation analyses of the responses.
Any analysis may be displayed, printed out or saved as an ASCII
file to diskette. The blank survey can also be printed out or
saved as an ASCII file to diskette.
This program requires a minimum of 320K of random access
memory. This program can be run on one or two floppy disks or a
hard disk. The files produced by the program can be kept on a
separate diskette or subdirectory. The number of surveys that can
be counted is limited only by the storage capacity of your diskette
or hard disk. A mouse may be used to select files and move through
the menus and displays.
II. How to Use SURVEY POWER
Installation on Floppy Diskettes
To install SURVEY POWER on a floppy diskette, format the disk
with the command FORMAT/S. Then place this master copy in Drive
A:. Type COPY A:*.* B:and press the Enter key. If you only have
one floppy drive, you will have to exchange disks periodically.
Installation on a Hard Disk
It is always a good idea to make a separate subdirectory for
every program you own. For example, you could make a subdirectory
by typing MD WISCO. Then change to this subdirectory by typing CD
WISCO. Then place this master copy in drive A: and type COPY A:*.*
and press the Enter key.
Starting the Program
Start this program by typing SURVEY and pressing the Enter
key. If you want to suppress the color, start the program by
typing SURVEY /B. You will see the introductory copyright screen.
Press any key to continue. The Menu will be displayed across the
top line of the screen.
Help
Use the left or right arrow keys to move from menu to menu.
Inside a menu use the Up or Down arrow keys to move from item to
item. Once your selection has been hi-lited, press the Enter key
to confirm the choice and continue. Low intensity choices can not
be selected.
Pressing the ESCape key will allow you to exit from any menu
selection.

III. File Menu
New
This selection will remove all survey questions, responses and
summarized survey data from the computer's memory.
Load A Survey
After making this selection, a menu of all survey questions
files in the current subdirectory will be displayed. You pick one
of the displayed files.
Create a Survey
This selection is used to create a new survey. You will enter
a new survey question file name, title, and survey questions. You
can create as many surveys as you want and store each under its'
own file name on a diskette.
The title and subtitle will be centered on all print outs to a
printer or diskette. An additional line called info can provide
additional information for you. This information will be displayed
but will not be printed.
Entering the Question
Up to 50 questions can be entered. Each question in a survey
may be up to three lines long. If the question is shorter that
three lines, leave the remaining question lines blank. If (=) the
equal sign is entered as the first line of the question, the 3
lines of the previous question will be displayed again. This will
speed entry when questions are very similar.
You can move between all lines and responses by pressing the
Enter, down arrow, tab, up arrow, shift-tab, PgUp, PgDn, and Esc
keys. Editing help is continuously displayed in the lower right
corner.
Entering the Question Type
Survey responses can be totalled differently. Enter the
letter A or the numeral 1 if only 1 of the listed choices will be
an acceptable response. Enter the letter B or the numeral 2 if
more than one of the listed choices will be acceptable responses.
Enter the letter C or the numeral 3 if the responses are to be
ranked from highest to lowest (1 = highest, 5 = lowest). The
program will convert these rankings and total the ranked weights.
(1 will be converted to a weight of 5, 2 will be converted to a
weight of 4, etc. Blank responses will be assigned a weight of 0).
SURVEY POWER Page 4
Enter the letter D or the numeral 4 if the responses to this
question will be numbers that can be added when the survey is
analyzed. Totals will be valid up to 32767.
Entering the Responses
Up to 5 responses can be entered for each question. If the
5 responses for a question are the same as the previous question,
enter the equal sign (=) for the first response and press the Enter
key. The responses from the previous question will be quickly
copied to the current question.
The Action position
After the question, question type, and responses have been
entered, the cursor is at the action position. Pressing the Enter
key will let you proceed to the next question. Enter the letter S
(for Save) to save this set of question and responses. Enter the
letter B (for Backwards) to make a Backwards jump to review a
previously entered question. Enter the letter J (for Jump) to jump
forwards to the next survey question. Enter the letter L ( for
Last) to move to the last survey question.
Enter the letter F ( for Finished) when you have finished
entering questions and responses. If any information has changed,
you can save the changes before entering survey results or
analyzing any responses.
Add Questions
This selection is used to add questions and choices to a
previously saved survey. You will be able to include more choices
(up to 5 total) after you have started to record responses.
You will not be able to add survey questions if responses have
already been entered to these survey questions.
Edit Titles
This selection is used to edit the previously entered title
and subtitle in the computer's memory.
This information will be automatically transferred to the data
files when they are created. An additional line of information
will be displayed. If all questions were analyzed, a total of all
surveys will be displayed. If a demographic analysis was
performed, the selected question and choice will be displayed.
Edit Questions
This selection is used to edit previously entered questions
and choices in the computer's memory. The questions and choices
may be edited even after responses have been entered. However, you
will not be able to add or delete any questions to this survey.
SURVEY POWER Page 5
Record Responses
This selection is used to record responses to the survey that
was placed in the computer's memory. Survey responses are
automatically saved after each set of responses has been entered.
The number of surveys that can be analyzed is limited only by the
storage capacity of your diskette or hard disk.
At any time during the recording of responses, an analysis may
be obtained. The analysis can be either displayed, printed out on
paper or saved as an ASCII file on a diskette.
The up arrow, down arrow, tab, shift tab, PgUp and PgDn keys
allow movement between the action position and the response
positions if an incorrect response was entered.
The type A single choice question allows only one response
(ABCDE). After pressing one of these letters, the letter will be
moved to the correct position. The cursor will be placed at the
action position. Pressing the Enter key will display the next
question and choices. The cursor will move to the first response
position. This method requires only two key strokes per question
and provides security to check the responses as well.
The type B multiple choice question with no ranking allows up
to 5 letters (ABCDE) to be entered. The letter and Enter key must
be pressed for each choice. When you have finished entering all
the letters, press the PgDn key to move the cursor to the action
position. The response letters that were chosen do not have to be
placed directly horizontal of their corresponding choice.
The type C ranking question allows only the numbers 1 to 5 to
be entered. If the corresponding response is left blank, it will
not be used in the weighting. Press the Enter key after each
number is entered. The highest ranking is considered to be 1, the
lowest 5. The program will convert these rankings and total the
ranked weights. (1 will be converted to a weight of 5, 2 will be
converted to a weight of 4, etc. Blank responses will be assigned a
weight of 0).
Responses to a type D question are totalled when the survey is
analyzed. Only whole numbers can be entered. Totals up to 32767
will be valid. Press the Enter key after each number is entered.
You can leave the position blank to represent 0.
The Action Position
Pressing the Enter key proceeds to the next question.
Responses to other questions of the current survey can also be
reviewed. Enter the letter B (for Backwards) to jump Backwards to
a previous question. Enter the letter J (for Jump) to jump forward
to the next question. Enter the letter L (for Last) to move to the
last survey question.
SURVEY POWER Page 6
Responses are automatically saved when the letter S (for Save)
is entered. After saving the responses, the first survey question
is displayed again and new responses may be entered. Enter the
letter F (for Finished) when you finish entering responses.
Shell to DOS
This selection allows temporary exit to the operating system.
SURVEY POWER remains in memory. To return, type EXIT.
IV. Analyze Menu
For each question, the program computes the percentage of
survey participants who checked that choice. For numeric
questions, a percentage is calculated as a part of the total
response.
These menu choices will be inactive (displayed in red on a
color monitor or with a bullet on a monochrome monitor) until
either a survey question file is loaded or a new file is created.
If no responses exist for the survey question file, the menu
choices will remain inactive.
All Questions
This selection will summarize all responses to all questions
of the survey in the computer's memory.
Correlation
This selection is performed to check any relationships between
choices made for two survey questions. For each main question
choice, the totals of all choices of the second question are found.
Demographic
A demographic analysis totals all surveys for a user-selected
choice to a user selected question. For example, the selected
question could have a choice of either male or female. A
demographic analysis would provide totals to all questions when the
respondent chose male to the selected question. A second
demographic analysis would provide totals to all questions when the
respondent chose female to the selected question.
The most reliable results of a demographic analysis are
performed on a type A - single choice question.
Use Existing Data
Previously saved data files may be quickly read from diskette.
The program will make sure that the data file is compatible with
the survey questions before proceeding.
SURVEY POWER Page 7
Save Current Data
Data files may be saved for quick recall later. If all
questions were analyzed (All Questions selection of this menu), the
file name is automatically set to the same name as the survey
question file. If a demographic or correlation analysis was done,
you will be asked to supply a file name.
View Current Data
This selection is used to view a data file that has been
retrieved or created from any analysis above. Data from all
questions and demographic analysis may also be modified as it is
displayed. Modified data can also be saved to diskette.
The Home key will move the cursor to the beginning of the data
field. The End key will move the cursor to the end of the data
field. The left and right arrow keys move the cursor within the
data field. Two additional keys are recognized. Pressing Alt-C
will clear the displayed data. Pressing Alt-R will restore the
original data.
The Up and Down arrows will move the cursor to the data
immediately above or below the current position. Pressing Tab and
Shift-Tab moves the cursor between the data fields and the Action
position. Pressing Alt-A quickly moves the cursor between the data
fields and the Action position.
Action position
PgUp will display the summarized data of the 15 previous
questions. PgDn will display the summarized data of the next 15
questions. The S (for Save) key will allow you to save any changes
you may have made to the diskette file.
Pressing Alt-A quickly moves the cursor between the data
fields and the Action position. When the letter F (for Finished)
key is pressed, you can save the current data, including any
changes you may have made.
Pressing the letter D (for Detail) key will display detailed
information about the question with the check mark. The complete
question, choices, responses, and percentage of total responses
will be displayed. Percentages are calculated to the nearest whole
number.
When the detailed information is displayed, you can quickly
move from one question to the next. The J (for Jump) key allows
you to jump forward to the next question. The B (for Backwards)
key allows you to make a Backwards jump to the previous question.
The L (for Last) key allows you to move to the last question. The
F (for Finished) key allows you to return to the View Data screen.
SURVEY POWER Page 8
V. Output Menu
If no data file is in memory, a blank survey form can be
printed out or placed in an ASCII file on diskette. ASCII files
can be imported in almost any word processor for final formatting
before publication of the blank survey.
Printer
If a data file is in memory, the survey questions, summarized
data, and percentages can be printed with this selection. The
printed results are ready for printing without reformatting or
retyping. If no data file is in memory, a blank survey form will
be printed.
The report can be printed on any printer capable of accepting
an ASCII file from the computer. No printer codes were included,
so the summarized information could be printed on the widest
variety of printers possible. The program was written to prevent
the placement of a survey question and the responses to the
question appearing on separate pages.
Diskette
If a data file is in memory, you can create an ASCII file on
the current drive or subdirectory. You will be asked to enter a
file name. The program will add the extension .ASC to your file
name. If no data file is in memory, a blank survey form will be
printed.
VI. Settings
Change Drive/Subdirectory
This selection is used to change the current drive or sub-
directory. After making this selection, you enter the drive and
subdirectory to be made current. Enter the word NONE to store the
files created by SURVEY POWER in the same subdirectory (or on the
same diskette) as the SURVEY.EXE program.
VII. Technical
Survey files have a common base name. Different extensions
are used for the related files. The extension .SUR is added to the
question file. The extension .RAW is added to the raw responses
that were recorded for each survey. The extension .ASC is added to
any ASCII file saved by the program. The extension .DAT is added
to any data file which is saved by the program.
If you have specialized needs, this program can be modified.
