  12.           ABOUT VTI:
  13.  
  14.           Video Tape Invoicing is a program for video rental stores.  It
  15.           keeps track of tapes to and from customers, does the invoicing of
  16.           items you sell, keeps a waiting list of customers who want to
  17.           rent movies, prints mailing lists, and helps you make buying and
  18.           selling decisions.  VTI needs a DOS-based computer with 640k RAM
  19.           and a hard disk drive.

  22.           TO INSTALL VTI ON YOUR COMPUTER:
  23.  
  24.           The diskette should have a file named INSTALL.BAT, which makes
  25.           two directories on your hard disk drive (VTI and VTITUT) and
  26.           installs the proper files in each.  To run the INSTALL routine,
  27.           type:
  28.                                   A:INSTALL  A:  C:
  29.           where A: is your floppy disk drive and C: is your hard disk
  30.           drive.  The INSTALL routine can install from any disk(ette) drive
  31.           or directory.

  33.           Part of the installation routine shows you the contents of your
  34.           computer's CONFIG.SYS file.  If you change CONFIG.SYS, reset the
  35.           computer before loading VTI.

  38.           TO GET THE PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION:

  40.           The manual is in the file named MANUAL.TXT, which the INSTALL
  41.           routine places in the \VTITUT directory.  To print it to your
  42.           printer, type a command similar to:
  43.                            COPY  C:\VTITUT\MANUAL.TXT  PRN:
  44.           The manual is about 100 pages, including "Table of Contents" and
  45.           "Index."  It is designed to print 10 cpi at six lines per inch on
  46.           8-1/2" x 11" paper with 1" margins (except for a 1-1/2" left
  47.           margin).

  50.           STARTING VTI:
  51.  
  52.           The INSTALL routine adds two batch files, VTI.BAT and VTITUT.BAT,
  53.           to the root directory of your hard disk drive.  At the C> prompt,
  54.           type VTITUT to load the tutorial program (which contains a few

  63.           sample tapes, customers, and authorized users).  When you are
  64.           ready to begin actual data entry, type VTI to load the program.
  65.  
  66.           When VTI loads, it displays a message which urges you to register
  67.           the program.  However, VTI never limits its capacity.

  69.           The first time you run VTI, the program goes through an "update"
  70.           routine to check the file structure, to sure all files are
  71.           available, and to create the correct indices.

  74.           NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR:
  75.  
  76.           A few years ago, I tried to find a computer program for my
  77.           business.  The inexpensive programs didn't do what my store
  78.           needed and the programs which did what I needed were priced in
  79.           the thousands of dollars.  I couldn't afford to pay the big bucks
  80.           and I couldn't afford to not have my store using a computer.

  82.           I spent $300 for one program, only to find it did the things the
  83.           author said, but not the way I wanted.  Those "options" were
  84.           another $75 and didn't work right either.

  86.           I gave up and wrote my own program.  The persons who saw it
  87.           encouraged me to put VTI on the market for other stores to use. 
  88.           I vowed that no store would ever get "taken" as I did. 
  89.           Therefore, here is my program.

  91.           Please install VTI in your store.  If you like it, put it into
  92.           actual use.  The program will remind you to register the program. 
  93.           When you register, I'll send you a code which makes that reminder
  94.           message go away.  If you don't like VTI, please drop me a note to
  95.           say why.

  97.           When you register VTI, you may request updates when you want
  98.           them.  The update fee is typically $25.00 to registered stores. 
  99.           When customers ask for a feature that I can incorporate into the
  100.           program to benefit many customers, I usually do it.  So, please
  101.           write with your suggestions.

  104.           HOW VTI IS DISTRIBUTED:

  106.           VTI is distributed by shareware.  Feel free to make copies of the
  107.           original distribution files and share them.  If you like the VTI
  108.           program and continue to use it, send the registration fee to the
  109.           author.

  119.           FILES ON DISTRIBUTION DISKETTE(S):
  120.  
  121.           When VTI is distributed on high-capacity diskettes and on most
  122.           bulletin boards, the files COPYVTI.EXE, INSTALL.BAT, and
  123.           README.VTI should be available.
  124.  
  125.           When VTI is distributed on 360k diskettes, one diskette contains
  126.           VTIUPDAT.EXE, README.VTI and INSTALL.BAT, while the second
  127.           diskette contains at least VTIDOCS.EXE
  128.  
  129.           If you did not obtain the correct set of files, contact your
  130.           dealer, distributor, or the author.  The COPYVTI.EXE,
  131.           VTIUPDAT.EXE and VTIDOCS.EXE files are self-extracting files
  132.           using PKZIP under license from PKWARE, Inc.

  135.           PROGRAM INSTALLATION NOTES:
  136.  
  137.           The CONFIG.SYS file must contain lines similar to FILES=20 and
  138.           BUFFERS=20.  VTI.BAT and VTITUT.BAT are created by the INSTALL
  139.           routine.  You may delete the README.VTI, MANUAL.TXT, *.ZIP and
  140.           PKUNZIP.EXE files from the hard disk drive when you complete
  141.           installation.

  144.           ERROR MESSAGES COMMON TO FIRST-TIME INSTALLATIONS
  145.  
  146.           "Not enough memory" (before VTI displays any of its messages) --
  147.                VTI is reporting a lack of available memory on the computer
  148.                (640k needed).  Remove memory-resident programs or alter the
  149.                SET CLIPPER=V016;R016 by reducing the R value (R016).
  150.           "Not enough memory" (after the program loads and displays at
  151.                least one of its messages or screens). Check the SET CLIPPER
  152.                line, and increase the "V" value to at least 16.
  153.           "Snow" on the screen -- add ;S1 at the end of the "SET CLIPPER"
  154.                line.
  155.           "open error proc USEIT c:\vti\reninven.dbf (4)" (or similar
  156.                message appearing on the top line of the screen).  If the
  157.                number is 4 or more, check the FILES=20 line in the
  158.                CONFIG.SYS file.  If the number is 0, try FCBS=10,5 or
  159.                STACKS=32,128 in the CONFIG.SYS file (to help expanded
  160.                memory, disk caches, etc.).  If the number is 1, 2, or 3,
  161.                one of the DBF files may be lost or damaged.  If the file
  162.                name ends with .NTX, do an option 9-1 Reindex <A>ll files
  163.                from the "Master Menu."
