READ THIS FIRST, FOLKS!
The purpose of this little file is to steer you correctly
after you have unzipped the Mini-Ledger program. If you
can't bear to read the manual, at least read this.
To get yourself started, make a subdirectory on your hard
disk and copy over to it the .ZIP file you have acquired.
(This should be called MINILEDG.ZIP but some folks get
cute and rename a file to something else. Anyway, there
should be only one .ZIP file.) Log on to that
subdirectory. Then, all you have to do to get started is
to type "ledger" <ENTER>. When you get to the main
screen, select the Utility Menu, select the setup program
and then tell Mini-Ledger where it is. Don't bother with
setting up the printer for the moment.
There is a small file, called SETUP.MAN, which can be
quickly printed out (type SETUP.MAN >PRN) -- it's only
about five pages and will guide you through.
This shareware version is not crippled, insofar as data
input is concerned. There are no restrictions in the
number of items you may place in your chart of accounts
or the number of transactions you may place in a monthly
file, subject to the amount of memory your computer has.
However, we want you to have an incentive to register the
program. So, there is one feature that is diasbled:
when you want to output data, normally you can do so to
your screen, to the printer and in some cases, to a disk
file. If you have not registered the program, you will
only be able to output to the screen. Sorry about that
but this program is the product of several years hard
labor and the author deserves to be paid if you want to
take full advantage of a very powerful package.
The manual file, LEDGER.MAN, about sixty pages, has been
formatted for direct print to your printer. (Type
LEDGER.MAN >PRN). It does not need any special printer
drivers to make it print but it has been noted that on a
laser printer, you may get an extra bit of bottom margin.
The manual is a distillation of the commercial loose-leaf
version and does not have the screen capture examples.
When you register the program, you might want to pay the
extra money for the fancy version of the manual.
Incidentally, we have added an additional file of
paycodes, called HOUSE.COD. If you would like to play
with it, before you start putting in real data, rename
PAYCODE.COD to something else and rename HOUSE.COD to
PAYCODE.COD and try it out.
We hope you enjoy Mini-Ledger. This program was first
introduced about 1984 and has a wide following. The
author has been prevailed upon to release 3.1 in
shareware form. He thinks no one will be fair and
register. We'll see.
