Welcome to WhizList, the EASIEST way to manage your list.

HOW TO REGISTER
WhizList is distributed as shareware. That means that you can try
before you buy. If you try it and like it, then send:
1. Your registration fee of $79.95 (plus tax if in California)
2. This registration number: WL206AB-110
3. You may print INVOICE.DOC and use it to send in your
registration.
Send your fee and your number to Arrow Connection, Box 899,
Pollock Pines, CA 95726. In return you will receive:
1. Fuller documentation with tips and ideas on how to use WhizList.
2. The latest update of WhizList.
3. The opportunity to earn a commission of $40 for each WhizList
that you distribute to anyone who becomes a registered owner.
You will receive a personal copy with your personal
registration number on it. Distribute your copy freely.
Anyone who registers will give your number. In that way, you
get credit for commissions. You are encouraged to upload
WhizList onto bulletin boards, pass out copies at user's group
meetings, and publicize it through your trade association
newsletter.
HOW TO GET HELP
Send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Arrow Connection, Box 899,
Pollock Pines, CA 95726. Include exact details of your problem.
If appropriate, send a disk with your data file on it along with
return postage if you want your disk back. Be sure to include
enough details so that I can reproduced the same problem exactly.

TO GET STARTED
Put WhizList into your logged drive.
Type WL <ENTER>
The menus will guide you the rest of the way.
INTRODUCTION
WhizList is a list management program. Use it for mailing lists,
customer lists, prospect lists, membership lists, even lists of
birthdays and anniversaries. With WhizList you may perform a
number of operations on your data.
OPENING MENU
The opening menu lets you choose an operation to perform on
your list. Here is an explanation of your choices.
1 Create a new file
A disk is like a file cabinet because it holds many files. You
can put anything you want into a file, and you can name the file
anything you want. Your new file will be a new list that you
type and store on disk. As you type in your list, you may do
minor editing.
A time-saving feature is the repeat key which the program
will tell you about. The repeat key works only if the cursor
is at the beginning of the last line. If you have typed anything
else on that line, you must move the cursor back to the beginning
of that line in order to use the repeat key. If you do this,
the program deletes what you previously typed on that line and
replaces it with the data stored in the repeat key.
What if you goof and type the wrong information under the wrong
field? There's an easy way to move it down to the next field
without re-typing it. First move the cursor to the beginning
of the data you want to move down. Then press ENTER. Everything
to the right of the cursor moves down to the next field. This
acts the same way as your word processing program does when you
press ENTER in the middle of a line. The second half of the
line moves down. The difference here is that the line below must
be blank in order for the ENTER key to behave that way. If it is
not blank then the program will take you to the next field to type.
2 Add to an old file
If you started a list yesterday, and want to add to it today,
select this option. When you start, the program shows you the
last set of data so that you know where you left off. From
there on the program works like "Create a new file."
3 Edit an old file
This option lets you make changes, deletions, or additions to your
list. It has a versatile find/replace function that allows
wildcards, multiple finds, replacement of capitals with lower case
and vice versa. To speed editing it has several special keys.
The "make-capitals" key converts lower case to capitals and vice versa.
The "transpose" key transposes two letters. The "move anywhere" key
moves the cursor instantly almost anywhere. The "multiple undo" key
lets you restore up to the last 15 deletions. Several HELP menus
are available to guide you.
The first 3 options are 3 doorways into the same part of the program.
Once inside, you can easily switch back and forth between editing
and adding to a file.
4 Import a word processing file into my list
You can import a previously created list into this program.
It doesn't matter whether your previous list is a word
processing list, a data base list, or a mailmerge list.
This keeps you from having to retype your list. If your
list is on another data base program, first create an ASCII
file using your data base program.
5 Change fields on an old file
You can rearrange a list simply by rearranging field names.
For example, if you decide you want LASTNAME before FIRSTNAME,
then one little change will automatically change the entire file.
You can even delete or add fields for total flexibility.
For example, you can add PHONE after NAME.
6 Split or combine fields (like city, state, zip)
This option lets you split just about anything in any manner.
You can easily and automatically separate city, state and zip
(US or Canadian) into three fields. You can separate first and
last names. The advantage of splitting these fields is that you
can now sort by last name or by zip code. This option also lets
you combine any two fields, and put any characters between them.
7 Sort a file (alphabetically, by zip code, etc.)
You can sort a list by name, by zip code, or by anything you want
to. Alphabetical sorting ignores upper and lower case letters.
"Mc" and "Mac" sort properly so that "McPherson" is sorted alongside
"MacPherson".
If you add to a sorted file, or if you edit a sorted file,
remember to sort it again. The current version of the program
does NOT remind you automatically.
8 Find duplicates in a sorted file
You can find and purge duplicates or near duplicates. This saves
postage for your mailing list.
9 Merge two or more sorted files
You can merge two or more lists together to make one big list.
The files you merge must be previously sorted, and each sorted
by the same field. For example, if one file is sorted by zip
code, then all the files must be sorted by zip code. The new
merged file will automatically be sorted by that same field.
L Select part of a file within certain limits
This is one of the most exciting parts of the program. Out of
a nationwide list, you may select all addresses in California.
To get fancier, you may select all addresses in California
EXCEPT those who live in Los Angeles or San Francisco. You can
specify an almost endless variety of conditions.
Once you select your conditions, you may choose any fields
to print, and any order to print them. You can even add an
optional slug line. You can do a lot of juggling.
N Select every Nth record
This allows you to take a random sampling of your list. You may
select every 5th name, every 6th name, or whatever number you
choose.
P Print a file
This option sends a file to your printer. Print anything from
simple labels to complicated forms. Choose from what may be
the widest variety of print options anywhere.
To print envelopes, tell the program to stop after each
address so that you can change envelopes. To print your
return address on the envelope, tell the program that you
want slug lines with your address to appear in the upper left
corner.
To print invoices or other forms, first choose what fields
to print and in what order. Then choose the format: you can
have a number of blank lines between fields, or you can have
fields indented or tabbed over. To fill in the dollar amount
on the invoice, tell the program to stop after a certain field
so that you can type in the amount from the keyboard.
To print both envelopes AND invoices, tell the program to
repeat each address two times, and tell it to stop after each
address. Select the two different formats you want for printing
both the envelope and the invoice. The printer will stop after
printing the envelope so that you can pull it out and put the
invoice into the printer. Touch a key and the printer will
continue printing the invoice. Again it will stop so that you
can go to the next envelope and the next address.
You can repeat an address a number of times, either in the
same format or in different formats. You can print each address
in up to three different formats - for example: an envelope
format, an invoice format, and a rolodex format.
To print continuous labels, do not select top or bottom
margins. To print sheets of paper, select top and bottom margins.
If your sheets of paper are not continuous feed, then tell the
program to stop at each page. In either case, you can select
left margins.
To print a telephone directory with fields lined up in neat
columns, tell the program to tab after each field except the
last one.
To print only one or some addresses, note the record numbers
as you read or edit a file. You can tell the program to print
only those record numbers.
You can print only from the keyboard, using your computer
like a typewriter.
After you select the options you want for your job, you can
store these options on disk for instant recall tomorrow. This
means that you need to set up the options only one time. These
options are automatically stored in a file called PRINT.OPT. You
can store up to 26 different sets of options for 26 different
kinds of jobs.
If the phone rings and you want the printer to be quiet,
just press a key and the printer will pause while you talk on
the phone.
R Read a file on the screen
This lets you view the file so that you can see what's in it.
W Write a file for word processing or mailmerge
The files you create with this program cannot be read by your
word processing program. When you want your word processing
program to read your file, then select this option. When you
write your list to disk, you may choose a number of formats
for the data to be written. You may choose a mailmerge format
so that you can create form letters or labels. You may choose
some data to be on the same line as other data, and you may
choose to have some data on a line by itself. For example,
you may choose to have name and address on separate lines, but
city, state and zip on one line.
D Directory of disk
Shows files on current logged drive.
I View instructions
Shows this documentation file on the screen and gives you an
opportunity to print it out also.
Q Quit
This takes you out of WhizList so that you can run another program.
TIPS
When the program asks you for a filename, you may specify a file
on drive B by typing B: before the filename. Otherwise, the
program will look in the current logged drive for your file.
When answering questions the computer asks you, often you need to
press ENTER after your answer. The ENTER lets the computer know
that you are finished with your answer. To help you know when to
end your answer with ENTER, the computer uses the word "Enter."
For example: "Enter filename:" means that the computer usually
expects you to type ENTER after the filename. Any exceptions
to this will be obvious by the way the computer responds.
When the computer asks you a question that you do not wish to
answer, then press ENTER. Often this will make the question go
away and take you back to a menu so that you can make another
choice.
Make sure there is enough space on your disk. Several operations
involve creating a new file, and you need to have enough room for
it. For example, when merging 10 files together, you need disk
space for the new merged file. Sorting and other operations
need extra disk space to work with.
When naming files, use a system that will help you remember what
the file is. Examples: use the extension .s for a sorted file,
use the extension .m for a merged file, use the extension .d
for a disk file that your word processor can read.
If your printer doesn't work, make sure it is plugged into
port LPT1 of your computer.
To save disk space, store files you are not currently working on
in ASCII format (using the W option at the main menu), and delete
the WhizList file. Later you can import them back into WhizList.
ERROR MESSAGES
01 File not found. Make sure all the .WL files that come with
this program are on the logged disk.
F0 Disk full. Some operations require plenty of extra space.
