EZ-TAXBREAK 90 QUICK MANUAL
This short documentation file is intended to introduce you to the most
advanced tax preparation system available for a microcomputer: TaxBreak.
However, TaxBreak 90 is very easy to learn and use - its pull-down menus,
pop-up windows, and context sensitive indexed on-line help system were
designed in such a way so that you can start using the program within
minutes from receiving it. TaxBreak 90 is state of the art software.
TaxBreak is more than a tax program: features like built-in 5000 cell
spreadsheet, graph plotting utility, ability to see up to 10 tax forms on
the screen at the same time, and interactive or batch data entry, make
TaxBreak the most advanced tax program available.
Regardless of what program you have seen before, (shareware, or commercial)
TaxBreak 90 is better. But don't take our word for it. Run the program, and
see for yourself.
Of course, if you will be using this program you are expected to register
it by sending us $25. When registering, we will send you the latest version
of TaxBreak, with the manual.
So, if you use shareware, why not support it too; after all, this is the
only way professional software development companies such as ourselves would
consider this market.
We also have available three more advanced versions of TaxBreak, namely
TaxBreak, TaxBreak 90 Plus, and TaxBreak 90 Pro. These programs support 30,
40, and 60 tax forms, respectively, have a hardbound typeset manual, and
come with a set of overlays for Form 1040 and Form 1040-ES Vouchers, so
that you can produce professional looking IRS submittable signature forms.
Just like this EZ-TaxBreak, TaxBreak Plus and TaxBreak Pro also have a built-
in 5000 cell spreadsheet, and a graph plotting utility.
TaxBreak 90 Pro also includes a very powerful time and billing system. As a
matter of fact, the Pro's time and billing features are also included with
EZ-TaxBreak 90, so that you can see it for yourself. If you a tax preparer,
you should seriously consider purchasing TaxBreak 90 Pro - its advanced
features will remendously improve your productivity.

This is TaxBreak 90
TaxBreak 90 is a federal income tax preparation program for Form 1040, Form
1040A, Form 1040EZ, and most of the accompanying forms and schedules. The
program is very easy to use, as well as fast and user-friendly. On-line
context-sensitive help is only an F1 away. TaxBreak 90 includes a state-of-
the-art pull-down menu user interface, with numerous pop-up windows.
TaxBreak 90 includes features unmatched by any other tax program available,
at any cost. Among some of the unique features of TaxBreak 90 is the
ability to have an unlimited number of multiples (for example, you can have
as many Schedule B's as you wish), full computation override, built-in return
diagnostics, built-in 5000 cell spreadsheet, built-in graph plotting window,
ability to see up to 10 separate tax forms on the screen at once, and move
between them with the touch of a key, transfer window, notepad, 13 print
options, batch print, fully customizable time and billing, ability to itemize
any line in the tax return, support for DOS commands from within the program,
on-line context sensitive and indexed help, etc. And, of course, TaxBreak is

READ-ME ------ text file containing latest info on TaxBreak 90
Starting TaxBreak 90
If you have a hard disk, you may want to copy all the TaxBreak 90 files
to a new subdirectory, then change to that subdirectory.
To run the program enter TB90 at the DOS prompt. Once the program starts
running, the registration information window is displayed. Hit any key to
continue. Now, Form 1040 is displayed. Use the arrow keys and the PgUp/PgDn
keys to move the cursor around the tax form. The ArrowUp and ArrowDown keys
move the cursor between fields, while the ArrowLeft and ArrowRight keys
move the cursor inside the same field for editing purposes.
The Help System
TaxBreak offers an advanced help system. To invoke all that you have to do is
press F1. The help is context sensitive, which means that it will show you
help regarding the action you were taking when you asked for help. The help
system also provides an index of all the help screens. Cross referencing of
related items is also provided.
To see help, press F1 (function key one). If there are more than one help
pages, page with PgUp and PgDn. To see help on highlited cross-referencing
items, select the item with the arrow keys and press Enter. To see the index,
select "Index, and press Enter. In the Index window, select the item on which
you wish to see help. Press Esc to exit the help system.
Note that the file TB90.HLP has to be available in order to see help.
TaxBreak 90 also offers extensive on-line IRS tax help. To see tax help,
press Ctrl-F1 (Control Function Key One).
The Help Lines
The bottom two lines on the screen are the help lines. These two lines
constantly display information pertaining to the special keys available and
their functions, as well as information about the current position of the
cursor. For example, while in a form, the type of input (alphanumeric,
value, or true/false) that goes in the field is displayed. If the type on
input is Value, then the status of the field is displayed (protected,
overridden, etc).
The ESC Key
The Escape key will always take you out of whatever you are doing, and
return you to your previous task. For example, if you are entering a
numeric value on Form 1040, and press F2 to open the Forms Menu, pressing
Escape will exit the Forms Menu, and return you to Form 1040. This is true
about all other environments provided with TaxBreak. Also, while entering
data in a field, the Esc key acts as the UNDO key - pressing Esc will
restore the field to its previous contents. So, if you accidentally start
typing information in a field, just hit Esc.
The Pull-Down Menu System
To invoke the main menu, just press /, or F10. Use the arrow keys keys to
move the cursor inside the menu, and press Enter to select. You can also
select by pressing the capital letter in a menu choice. For example, to
choose "Utilities" from the main menu, you can press the key "U". Several
levels of pop-up menus are invoked from the main menu. These menus are
displayed in separate windows. To select a choice from a pop-up menu, you
can use the arrow keys to move the cursor and press Enter, or just hit the
capital letter in that selection. To exit a menu or a window, just press
the Esc key.
Speed Keys
All features available with TaxBreak 90 can be selected from the menu
system. However, because you will be using some more than others we also
provided access to these features by the use of the function keys. Below
are listed the functions available with the function keys:
To get help press F1.
To open the forms menu press F2, or choose "Tax forms" from the main menu.
To see the "Quick View 1040" tax summary window, press F3 while in a
form, or from the Main Menu choose Utilities, and from the Utilities menu
choose Quick View.
To save a tax return to disk press F4.
To load a tax return from disk press F5.
To override a field that is computed by the program press F6 while in a
form, or from the main menu choose "Override". To unoverride an overridden
field, choose "Override" again for that field.
To invoke the Notepad window just press the F7 key while in a form, or
choose "Notepad" from the "Utilities" menu.
To itemize a numeric entry, hit F8, or from the main menu choose "Itemize",
then from the "Itemize " menu choose "Itemize".
To recalculate the return, hit F9 while in a form, or invoke the main menu
and choose "Calculate".
There are many other features of the program not mapped to the function
keys. To select these features select them from the menu.
If the default colors do not look good on your monitor, choose "Utilities"
from the main menu, then choose "Options", then choose "cOlors". From the
color table select the color codes that will provide the best display on
your monitor. For later use, you may also want to save these colors with
"Save options".
Remember: To get context-sensitive help just press F1 (function key one).
Entering Data In TaxBreak's Forms
TaxBreak's input fields fall into three categories: VALUE, ALPHANUMERIC,
and TRUE/FALSE.
VALUE fields accept numeric entry. These entries are usually used in
computations. The value fields that TaxBreak will compute are PROTECTED,
which means that you can not enter data there (unless you override that
field). The value fields that are not protected are for you to enter data.
Other value fields are protected because they will contain values that will
be brought in from other forms. Protected fields can be overridden. However,
keep in mind that once you override a field, TaxBreak will not compute that
field any more, unless you later un-override the field (by selecting
Override again when the cursor is in that field), so use this powerful
feature cautiously.
ALPHANUMERIC fields are fields that contain information such as names,
social security numbers, descriptions, etc. These fields are not involved
in any computations, however they are important - you can bet on the fact
that IRS will reject any tax returns missing names or social security
numbers. Also, if you set AutoName Transfer and/or AutoSSN Transfer to ON,
the taxpayer's and/or spouse's names and/or social security numbers will be
transported from Form 1040 to other forms and schedules as applicable.
TRUE/FALSE fields are fields that are generally enclosed within a pair of
"[ ]". If that field applies to your case, you place an "X" there. For
example, if your filing status is single, you place an "X" in the box on
line 1 of Form 1040. Similarly, if your filing status is married filing
joint return, you should place an "X in the box on line 2. Make sure that
your checkmarks for these fields are not conflicting, for example, you
should not check both the single and the married filing joint boxes, or
TaxBreak may not be able to compute your return properly. These type of
fields are important to the program, so make sure that you check all that
are applicable. In certain instances the program will check some of the
TRUE/FALSE fields automatically, for example, when computing the tax, the
program will check either the "Tax Table" box, the "Tax Rate Schedules", or
the "Form 8615" box, as applicable.
Overriding Fields
Fields that the program will compute or fields that are carried over from
other forms (such as line 7 on Form 1040) are designated as "VALUE
PROTECTED" on the help line. Fields that the user is to enter are
designated as "VALUE" on the help line. The program will not accept a value
in a field that is protected, unless you override it first. For example, if
you do not wish to use W2's, but rather enter your wages directly on line 7
of Form 1040, you will have to override that line first. However, keep in
mind that once you override a field, the program will no longer compute
that field, so use this powerful feature cautiously.
Multiple Forms
TaxBreak 90 supports an unlimited number of multiples (more of the same
form). To add a new multiple to the tax return select New Form from the Tax
Forms menu. The number of the multiple you are currently working on is
listed on the help line. To remove a multiple from memory use Remove Form
from the Tax Forms menu. You can also clear the entries in a form with
Clear Form. To select a form use Select Form. This is a complex subject,
and there isn't enough room to expand on it here. The TaxBreak manual
contains a detailed discussion on the subject.
Preparing Taxes With TaxBreak 90
This section will give you a couple of hints on preparing tax returns with
TaxBreak 90. After you have started the program, enter your name, address,
social security number, and filing status on page 1 of Form 1040. You can
enter your wages and taxes witheld on the W2 forms - the results will be
transfered to Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ automatically. If you do not wish
to use the W2 form, you will have to override line 7 on Form 1040, and then
enter your wages there. The same applies to line 54 (taxes witheld). Press
F9 to recalculate the tax return. Once you are finished, print the tax
return (Form 1040 in overlay, pre-printed or laser format, and the
supporting forms and schedules A and B in computer generated format) sign
it, and mail it to IRS. Remember: IRS will only accept Schedules A and B
printed in computer generated format. The signature forms such as 1040,
1040A, and 1040EZ will have to be printed using overlay, preprinted forms,
or laser generated. This is all the information we have space for here.
The TaxBreak manual contains much more information on this subject,
including a detailed listing of the IRS requirements for printing the tax
forms, and a complete descriptions of each print format available with the
program.
Final Word

short introductory manual will have provided you with enough information so
that you can run the program, and note its advanced features. However, in
order to take full advantage of the program, you need the complete manual.
