- 3. I feel that my self-development can be attributed to a diversity
- of interests and a desire to learn and participate outside of work and
- school environments. These factors have led me to become involved in
- various activities, each having its own particular appeal and acting
- as a component of my overall disposition.
-
- To begin, I am an avid outdoorsman with special interests in
- rafting, hiking, bicycling and deep sea fishing. Each presents a
- challenge of its own and with time, as my skills have improved
- significantly, I have realized special forms of satisfaction.
- Moreover, the times when I am able to engage in these activities
- represent a break from daily routines, pressures and responsibilities.
-
- I am also an active participant in team sporting activities. I
- constantly seek out competition and league situations where my
- performance can have an impact on the overall outcome. I enjoy seeing
- how common individual goals establish a rare type of companionship and
- dedication often not found in other types of interaction.
-
- As often as possible, I take advantage of opportunities to
- travel, to attend plays and movies or to view exhibits. I find these
- leisure activities to be especially enjoyable since they provide
- informative entertainment and in addition, a means for meeting people
- with similar interests to my own.
-
- There are certain other interests of mine that I tend to think of
- as being individualistic. One is my appreciation of music, from both
- a performing and listening perspective. For the past seven years, my
- clarinet has provided a pleasurable hobby as well as a means of
- venting aggressions in a civilized manner. My album and tape library
- has grown to be quite extensive as new musical material continues to
- capture my attention. My interest in reading has also grown
- substantially. A compelling novel can keep me occupied for days at a
- time by providing a sense of involvement as a situation unfolds. I
- also enjoy discussing my interpretations with others in order to gain
- new insights and views that might have been previously overlooked. A
- recent interest of mine is in personal computing. I seem to be
- spending countless hours with my "Apple" engaged in everything from
- machine language programming to word processing to mastery of video
- games. The wide range of activities available and my fascination with
- the computer's internal workings have enhanced both my understanding
- and appreciation of this incredible device.
-
- I believe that the mix of activities and interests described
- above reveals an important aspect of my personality not found in
- academic records or standardized test scores. It is important to
- realize that individuals react with differing environments and are
- affected by the resulting experiences in each of them.
