- species, these four cells become the spores while, in
- others, the four cells undergo mitotic division to
- create eight spores. In addition, Ascomycota
- reproduce asexually. Many species grow specialized
- sporangiophores, called a conidiophores, that bear
- chains of spores, called conidia, on the exterior
- surface of their sporangia. Some species, typically
- yeasts, undergo a specialized form of mitotic division
- called budding, where a small new cell, containing an
- exact copy of the parent cell's genome and, thus,
- capable of developing into a normal adult, pops off the
- parent.
- Basidiomycota, or club fungi, are some of the
- largest fungi, including such organisms as the
- mushrooms and toadstools, for example. The hyphae
- of Basidiomycota are unique in the fungal kingdom for
- having fully separated cells, that is cells that are
- completely divided by cell walls and membranes.
- Basidiomycota have club-shaped reproductive structures,
- called basidia, that hang underneath the cap of the fungi.
