- TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS DURING INSTALLATION
- ________________________________________
-
- PROBLEM: When trying to install SCIENCE SMART, nothing happens after
- the CD-ROM is inserted in a Windows 95 machine.
-
- SOLUTION: Autoplay is a Windows 95 feature and must be enabled in
- order for Windows 95 to automatically begin installation. Re-enable
- Autoplay and re-insert the CD-ROM to begin installation. If the
- computer is running Windows 3.1, run Setup as instructed in the
- installation instructions.
-
- ---------------------
- PROBLEM: An error message appears saying that the monitor must be set
- to display 256 colors.
-
- SOLUTION: Switch to a Super VGA 640x480 256 color video setting.
-
- ---------------------
- PROBLEM: During installation, a message appears stating that I do not

- GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
- ____________________________
-
-
- PROBLEM: When double-clicking on the SCIENCE SMART icon, a General
- Protection Fault occurs.
-
- SOLUTION: Check to see that you meet the system requirements including
- the required 6MB free RAM. If you still have problems and meet the
- system requirements, try using the generic 640x480 256 color SVGA
- driver.
-
- ---------------------
- PROBLEM: After changing video drivers and restarting Windows, an error
- occurs when trying to initialize the video adapter.
-
- SOLUTION: Run Windows Setup through DOS to change back to the old
- driver. Your video card manufacturer may have a free updated version
- of the driver which may solve any problems you are having.
-
- ---------------------
- PROBLEM: A General Protection Fault occurs while running a shell
- (e.g. Navigator, Tabworks, Dashboard) or a screensaver (e.g. After
- Dark).
-
- SOLUTION: Completely disable the shell or screensaver and restart the
- computer.

- Q: How do I change my video driver so that I can run SCIENCE SMART in
- Windows 3.1?
-
- A: 1. In Program Manager, there exists a Program Group called Main.
- Within this group, there is an icon for Windows Setup. Upon double clicking
- the Main program group, this will be visible. 2. Double click on the
- Windows Setup icon. 3. Observe the setting for Display. Write this
- driver name down and keep it safe. 4. Go to Options on the menu bar
- and select Change System Settings on the pull-down menu under Options.
- 5. A new window will appear which is similar to the previous window,
- with the exception that there are downward-pointing arrows to the right
- of the settings boxes. 6. Click on the arrow to the right of the
- Display setting box. A pull down menu will appear. 7. Scroll up and
- down and look for the Super VGA 640 x 480 256 color display driver.
- 8. Highlight this driver and click on the OK button. 9. If you have a
- driver currently installed, select the current driver. 10. You will
- now need to restart Windows and when it comes back up, you will be
- operating in the prescribed video mode.
-
- If you are installing the driver from a disk obtained from your video
- card manufacturer: 1. Follow the above directions to step 6.
- 2. Select Other Display (requires disk from OEM) which will be located
- at the bottom of the list. 3. Insert the display disk in the drive.
- 4. A path will be listed by default as: A:\. If you have the disk in
- your B: drive, change this to B:\. 5. Click on OK. 6. A list of
- drivers will appear. Select the Super VGA 640 x 480 256 color display
- driver by highlighting it and click on OK. 7. The necessary files will
- copy to your hard drive and you will need to restart your computer
- (done by clicking on Restart Windows Now).

- If you cannot find this driver:

- to restart your computer (done by clicking on Restart Windows Now).
- 7. If you do not see the list of drivers, try disk #2, then #3 and so
- on.
-
- ---------------------
- Q. Though I'm running an SVGA 640X480 256 color driver that you
- recommend, this program's fonts appear garbled on my screen.
-
- A. Make sure that you have a Truetype version of the Times New Roman
- font installed and loading. SCIENCE SMART lessons require this font to
- make mathematical expressions display correctly on screen. If you do
- not have this font properly installed, SCIENCE SMART will try to choose
- the next best font- which may be what you're seeing on your screen.
- ---If you do have Times New Roman installed and screen fonts still do
- not look right, there may be a conflict with True Type fonts on your
- system. To try troubleshooting this: 1. In the Main program group,
- open up Control Panels. 2. Open up Fonts. 3. Click on True Type.
- 4. A dialog box will come up with 2 options: Enable True Type Fonts and
- Show only True Type Fonts in Applications. Each has a box which can be
- crossed. Since there are only 2 boxes, there are only 4 permutations.
- Try out the other 3 permutations.
-
- ---------------------
- Q: How do I uninstall SCIENCE SMART using Windows 95?
-
- A: In Windows 95, press the Start button. Choose Settings. Choose
- Control Panels. Choose Add/Remove Programs. Highlight the program(s)
- you'd like to uninstall. Click Remove.
