Mark Garlick originally trained to be an astronomer, earning a Ph.D. in astronomy at University College
in London in 1993. After graduation, he worked as an astronomer at the University of Sussex until he
came to the realization that being an astronomer was not all it was cracked up to be. He still enjoys
astronomy, but now at the popular level. He has tried his hand at the field of science journalism with
some success, having had articles appear in NEW SCIENTIST and THE GUARDIAN. He also like to
write fiction and has recently completed his first novel.
Most of his time, however, is spent painting science fiction, surreal, and astronomical works of art. He is
mainly self-taught (although he did take some art courses while in school) and has wanted to draw and
paint for as long as he can remember. He has worked with oil pastels, gouache, and acrylics in the past,
but uses primarily acrylics today. One of his astronomical paintings was exhibited in ASTRONOMY
NOW's gallery and he created a series of paintings for a book on astronomy for children.
