  1. RiscOS Hard Disc Backup            Version 3

  3. ----------------- Introduction ----------------
  4. This application backs up hard discs (ADFS or
  5. SCSI) to as many ADFS floppies as required.  It
  6. can be used for a full backup, where all files
  7. are copied, or an incremental backup where only
  8. the files that have been changed since the last
  9. backup are copied.  It leaves a marker file (of
  10. type &409) in the source directory to record
  11. the date the last backup was made. 
  12.  
  13. ------------------- Running -------------------
  14. Double-click on the application, or on a marker
  15. file.  In the latter case, the source entry box
  16. will be filled in with the directory that that
  17. file was contained in, otherwise it will show a
  18. default.

  23. ---------------- Control Window ---------------
  24. Enter the required filing system name and
  25. source directory in the 'Source' box.  The
  26. backup process will look at all files in that
  27. directory and any sub-directories below it.

  29. Enter a different drive number if required for
  30. the 'Destination'; this must be an ADFS floppy. 
  31.  
  32. Select 'Full' or 'Incremental' as required.  If
  33. a marker file does not exist in the source
  34. directory, a full backup will automatically be
  35. done. 
  36.  
  37. Select 'Use exclusion list' if it is required
  38. to exclude certain directories from the backup
  39. process (see 'Exclude list' later for details). 
  40.  
  41. Select 'Process unstamped files' to include
  42. these in the backup process.  If this is not
  43. set, all unstamped files will be ignored.  If
  44. these are included, select 'Query unstamped
  45. files' to ask whether unstamped files should be
  46. copied.

  48. When everything is set up, click 'Start' or
  49. press RETURN to begin the backup.  Click
  50. 'Info...' for program information or 'Help...'
  51. to view this help text.  Click 'Quit' or press
  52. ESCAPE to exit. 
  53. ----------------- In Progress -----------------
  54. The progress window will pop up and show how
  55. the backup is going.  Messages and questions
  56. will appear in the large white box at the
  57. bottom.  To restart after a message, click
  58. 'Continue' or press RETURN.  To reply Yes to a
  59. question, click 'Yes' or press RETURN, to reply
  60. No click 'No' or press ESCAPE.

  62. You will be asked to load discs as required. 
  63. The program remembers which discs have been
  64. used before, and how much space is left on
  65. them, and may ask for one of them back if
  66. enough space is still free on it. 
  67.  
  68. If you insert an unformatted disc, you will be
  69. asked whether to format it.  If you answer Yes,
  70. after it has been formatted (in D format) a box
  71. will pop up asking for a name for the new disc. 
  72. Fill this in and press RETURN or click 'OK'. 
  73. If you insert a disc for the first time which
  74. already has files on it, you will be asked
  75. whether these existing files should be deleted.

  77. When all is complete, a marker file will be
  78. created in the source directory to record the
  79. last backup date.

  81. If it is necessary to abandon the backup, kill
  82. the Backup task using the Task Manager. 
  83. ---------------- Exclude list -----------------
  84. To use the exclusion list option, edit the
  85. "Excludes" file in the application directory to
  86. contain the directory names that are not to be
  87. backed up.  Name matching is case-sensitive,
  88. and is done on the last part of the name (so,
  89. for example, an entry of '.bak' will result in
  90. any directory with the name 'bak' being ignored
  91. while an entry of '$.bak' will only exclude the
  92. single 'bak' directory at the top level).
