  1. Instructions for setting up NC2PSI5
  2. ===================================

  4. What is NC2PSI5?
  5. ---------------
  6.  
  7. NC2PSI5 stands for Netscape Calendar to Psion 5 conversion.  The program will
  8. take an ASCII file produced by Netscape Calendar's Export function and create
  9. a
  10. Psion Series 5 Agenda file.  The process is one-way, from Netscape to Psion. 
  11. There
  12. is no process to send a file from the Psion to Netscape Calendar.  No
  13. syncronisation
  14. is available.  The program is released as freeware - don't expect it to be
  15. elegant 
  16. or fully-featured ;-)  I wrote it purely for my own use - if it helps you
  17. then great, if
  18. not then I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere.
  19.  
  20. Objective of the program
  21. ------------------------

  23. The objective of the program is to help anyone who is connected to a network
  24. which uses 
  25. Netscape Calendar to maintain multiple diaries.  The user can download
  26. his/her Calendar
  27. diary and have it available on the Psion Series 5.  Since no syncronisation
  28. is possible,
  29. there are some constraints.  New appointments gathered "on the run" with the
  30. Psion will
  31. also need to be added into Netscape Calendar.  Only information which is
  32. available in
  33. Netscape Calendar's export file can be downloaded into the Psion.  However
  34. despite these
  35. constraints, I find that it's very useful to transfer my diary on a daily
  36. basis - either
  37. first thing in the morning or last thing at night - and have all the
  38. information available
  39. in the Psion.
  40.  
  41. Setting up NC2PSI5
  42. ------------------

  44. To install, double-click on nc2psi5.sis in Windows Explorer or transfer the
  45. file to the
  46. Psion and install it from there.  If you have installed the files
  47. successfully, then you
  48. should see the familiar Netscape symbol appearing in your Extras bar.
  49.  
  50. Using a flash disk
  51. ------------------

  53. For reasons of speed and to prevent write failure with low batteries, I
  54. recommend that 
  55. you keep your Agenda file on your c:\ drive and not on the flash disk.
  56.  
  57. Running Netscape Calendar Export
  58. --------------------------------
  59.  
  60. First you must export your Netscape Calendar file.  From the File menu,
  61. choose the Export
  62. Data option.  Under the Format section, choose the "File" radio button and
  63. select Ascii 
  64. Tab delimited file from the drop down menu.  Then from the Period section,
  65. select the 
  66. number of days that you want to export (my own preference is from 0 previous
  67. days to the 
  68. next 90 days, giving about 3 months of entries).  Under People/Resources,
  69. your own name
  70. should appear.  Under File Name you should delete the default name shown by
  71. Netscape 
  72. Calendar and enter a name for your export file.  I use filename NC2PSI5.TRF. 
  73. Lastly,
  74. press the Export button.
  75.  
  76. Netscape Calendar will now have created an export file which you will need to
  77. transfer to
  78. your Psion using PSIWIN.  If you don't know in which directory Netscape
  79. Calendar has 
  80. placed the export file then, still within the Export Data dialog, press
  81. browse - this 
  82. should show you where the export file resides.
  83.  
  84. Transferring the export file to the Psion
  85. -----------------------------------------

  87. When you transfer the Ascii file, be sure that PSIWIN doesn't automatically
  88. convert your 
  89. file to Psion Word (check the Psiwin literature if in doubt about how to do
  90. this).  You
  91. want to do a straight copy from your PC to the Series 5 with no conversion. 
  92. If you have
  93. called the Export file NC2PSI5.TRF, then place this file in Psion directory
  94. c:\.  An easy
  95. way to do this operation is to right-click on the NC2PSI5.TRF file and select
  96. "Send
  97. to Psion C drive".
  98.  
  99. Running NC2PSI5
  100. ---------------

  102. Select NC2PSI5 from your Extras bar.  You will be presented with an initial
  103. screen.  By
  104. default the program will look for the export file as C:\NC2PSI5.TRF and will
  105. create a
  106. Series 5 agenda file called c:\documents\calendar.  You also need to select
  107. the correct
  108. date format here - if in doubt then look at your exported file with a text
  109. editor to
  110. see what default format Netscape has used.
  111.  
  112. On the second page, NC2PSI5 gives a number of options for possible inclusion
  113. in your 
  114. agenda file.  The options should be self-explanatory - the best way to decide
  115. which options
  116. you want to include is to run NC2PSI5 a few times with different settings and
  117. look at
  118. the resulting Agenda file.  Note: your Agenda file must NOT be open when
  119. NC2PSI5 runs,
  120. otherwise an error will result.

  122. Summary

  125. The above steps may sound complicated, but in fact are quite straightforward
  126. with practice -
  127. particularly since both Netscape Calendar and NC2PSI5 save most of your
  128. settings each time
  129. you run the programs.
