  1. INSTALLING FOXPRO FOR MS-DOS
  2.  
  3. Three installation options are available with FoxPro for MS-DOS:
  4.  
  5.  *  Normal Installation copies the FoxPro program files, help files
  6.     and examples from disk or from a network to your hard drive.
  7.     Normal Installation installs FoxPro for MS-DOS on a single
  8.     machine.
  9.  
  10.  *  Administrative Installation ( /A) copies all FoxPro files along
  11.     with installation files to a network drive so that users can
  12.     either run the shared network copy after doing a Workstation
  13.     Installation or install FoxPro for MS-DOS to their local machines
  14.     with a Normal Installation.
  15.  
  16.  *  Workstation Installation ( /N) copies FoxPro initialization files
  17.     to a local machine so that a shared network version of FoxPro for
  18.     MS-DOS can be run.  Workstation Installation requires less space
  19.     on individual machines and allows greater administrative control
  20.     of the use of FoxPro.  Workstation Installation requires a
  21.     previous Administrative Installation.
  22.     
  23.  *  Normal Installation After an Administrative Installation works the
  24.     same way Normal Installation from floppy disks works.  The way you
  25.     initiate Normal Installation after an Administrative Installation
  26.     is by typing X:\<path>\INSTALL at the MS-DOS prompt and pressing
  27.     Enter.  X represents the network drive and <path> represents the
  28.     directory in which FoxPro was installed with the Administrative
  29.     Installation option.

  33.     * Note:  Every Microsoft FoxPro user must have a Microsoft   *
  34.     * FoxPro license.  A license is obtained by buying a retail  *
  35.     * package or a Microsoft License Pack.  For more information *

  41.     MS-DOS Installation and Configuration manual.

  43.     FoxPro asks you several questions during the installation process. 
  44.     The default response is listed in brackets, for example:
  45.     
  46.     Is this information correct? [Y] :
  47.  
  48.     To choose the default response, press Enter.
  49.  
  50.     These instructions assume that you are installing from drive A. 
  51.     If you are installing from another drive, please adjust the
  52.     instructions accordingly.

  55. ADMINISTRATIVE INSTALLATION ( /A)
  56.  
  57.     Before you start the Administrative Installation, the network must
  58.     be operational and you must have read and write access to the
  59.     network    directory in which you want to install FoxPro.  For more
  60.     information, see your network software documentation.
  61.     
  62.     To install FoxPro for MS-DOS for administrative use:
  63.     
  64.     1.  Insert FoxPro Disk 1 into drive A.
  65.  
  66.     2.  Type A:\INSTALL /A at the MS-DOS prompt and press Enter.
  67.  
  68.     3.  Enter your name and company in the spaces provided.  You will
  69.     be asked to confirm this information.  If you re-install FoxPro,
  70.     this information will automatically be included.  When you start
  71.     FoxPro for MS-DOS, this information will appear on the
  72.     initialization screen.

  74.     4.  The installation program suggests a directory in which to
  75.     install FoxPro for MS-DOS.  To confirm that you want to install
  76.     FoxPro in this directory, press Enter.  If you do not want to
  77.     install FoxPro in the default directory, type N and press Enter. 
  78.     You will be prompted for an installation directory.
  79.     
  80.     5.  If the directory in which FoxPro will be installed is not in
  81.     your path, the installation program asks you whether or not you
  82.     want your path changed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Press Enter to
  83.     allow the modification, or type N and press Enter if you do not
  84.     want your path modified.
  85.  
  86.     6.  The required FoxPro for MS-DOS files and all files necessary
  87.     for subsequent installations are copied to the server.  When the
  88.     basic installation is completed, you are prompted to press Escape
  89.     to quit or any other key to continue with optional component
  90.     installation.

  92. Optional Component Installation
  93.  
  94.     The optional components you choose to install in the
  95.     Administrative Installation are available for workstation use;
  96.     those components you do not install are not available.  All FoxPro
  97.     components remain available to those who perform Normal
  98.     Installations after the Administrative Installation, regardless of
  99.     which optional components you include.
  100.         
  101.     Before installing optional components, the installation program
  102.     prompts you to choose the type of monitor used with your system.
  103.  
  104.     Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate monitor type and
  105.     press Enter.
  106.  
  107.     During installation, you are given the option of installing the
  108.     FoxPro supplemental programs and files.  This step is identical to
  109.     the corresponding step in Normal Installation.  For more
  110.     information, refer to the FoxPro for MS-DOS Installation and
  111.     Configuration manual.

  113. Stopping the Installation
  114.  
  115.     If you want to stop the installation process, you can press Escape
  116.     at any prompt or press Ctrl+C at any time.  Note that if you press
  117.     Ctrl+C, installation does not stop immediately.  When it does, the
  118.     MS-DOS prompt appears.

  120. Installing Additional Files
  121.  
  122.     After you have installed FoxPro, you can install any optional
  123.     components that you did not specify during installation.  To do
  124.     so, restart FoxPro by typing FOX at the MS-DOS prompt and pressing
  125.     Enter.  Insert any one of the product disks into the floppy drive
  126.     and enter the following command in FoxPro's Command window:

  128.     DO INSTALL
  129.  
  130.     You will be prompted to insert the disk or disks that contain the
  131.     additional files that you want to install.

  133.     Note: If you are installing from a drive other than A:, you will
  134.     be instructed to select another source drive after the "Abort,
  135.     Retry, Fail?" message.

  138. WORKSTATION INSTALLATION ( /N)
  139.  
  140.     1.  Type X:\<path>\INSTALL /N at the MS-DOS prompt. X represents
  141.     the network drive and <path> represents the directory in which
  142.     FoxPro was installed with the Administrative Installation option.

  144.     2.  The installation program suggests a directory in which to
  145.     install FoxPro.  To confirm that you want to install FoxPro in
  146.     this directory, press Enter.  If you do not want to install FoxPro
  147.     in the default directory, type N and press Enter.  You will be
  148.     prompted for an installation directory.

  150.     3.  If the directory in which FoxPro will be installed is not in
  151.     your path, the installation program asks you whether or not you
  152.     want your path changed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Press Enter to
  153.     allow the modification, or type N and press Enter if you do not
  154.     want your path modified.

  156.     4.  FOX.EXE is copied to your FoxPro directory.  You can end the
  157.     installation by pressing Escape at this point or press any other
  158.     key to configure your FoxPro workstation.
  159.  
  160.     5.  An information screen explains FoxPro configuration and allows
  161.     you to specify the directory for your configuration files to be
  162.     created in.  The default is your FoxPro directory.  Press Enter to
  163.     accept this default or type your preferred directory in the text
  164.     box and press Enter.
  165.  
  166.     6.  Choose <<Continue with configuration>> to proceed or <Abort
  167.     configuration procedure> to cancel the configuration procedure.

  169.     7.  A dialog opens so that you can set the directories for:
  170.     
  171.       * CONFIG.FP - Your FoxPro configuration file.
  172.       * FOXUSER - A FoxPro database that keeps track of window sizes
  173.       and so on.
  174.       * Overlay files - Since the FoxPro executable file is too large
  175.       to fit in conventional memory at one time, parts of                 
  176.       it are kept in overlay files and loaded into memory                 
  177.       as needed.
  178.       * Editor work files - Temporary files created during editing
  179.       sessions.
  180.       * Sort work files - Temporary files used during database sorting
  181.       and indexing.
  182.       * Program work file - Temporary program file.
  183.   
  184.     Descriptions of these options are included in the dialog.  By
  185.     default, FoxPro uses all available expanded memory. In this
  186.     dialog, you are given the option to Limit EMS Available to FoxPro. 
  187.     There are three push buttons at the bottom of the dialog:
  188.         <<OK>> - Accept the directories and EMS settings.
  189.         <filer> - Open the FoxPro Filer accessory to view your
  190.         directories before deciding on configuration directory
  191.         defaults.
  192.         <Cancel> - Cancel the configuration procedure.
  193.  
  194.     8. You are given the option to have FoxPro update your
  195.     AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that FoxPro looks for configuration
  196.     information in the directories that you have specified.
  197.     
  198.     9. You are given the option to have configuration changes written
  199.     to your CONFIG.FP file.
  200.  
  201.     10.  Installation is complete.  Press any key to start FoxPro. 
  202.     Remember to reboot your machine so that changes made to your
  203.     AUTOEXEC.BAT can take effect.
