  6. Introduction:
  7.  
  8.     VCD PowerPlayer is a pure software VCD and MPEG-1 audio/video 
  9.   playing system. By using this software, Users can play VCD
  10.   titles and MPEG-1 audio/video files without any additional
  11.   hardware.
  12.     VCD PowerPlayer can support CD-I, VCD 1.0, VCD 2.0, and normal
  13.   MPEG-1 files. The frame size can be 320x240 (SIF), 384x240, 352x240,
  14.   352x252, 288x252, 160x120, etc. LinkMPEG supports MPEG-1 Audio Layer
  15.   I&II audio formats. The sampling rate can be 48.0kHz, 44.1kHz, 32kHz,
  16.   or 22kHz. The MPEG-1 sequence can be audio/video, audio only, video
  17.   only, or intra-frame only (still picture). VCD PowerPlayer supports
  18.   DCI v1.6, DirectDraw I, II, and III, WinG and GDI display interfaces.
  19.   It follows Digital Video MCI and OpenMPEG 1.10 specifications. Now,
  20.   it can run under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 operating systems.

  23. System Requirements:

  25.   1. Pentium-90 PC compatible is required. Pentium-100 (or above) PC
  26.      compatible is recommended.
  27.   2. 8- or 16-bit sound card is required.
  28.   3. 2 time speed CD player is required. 4 time speed CD player is
  29.      recommended.
  30.   4. 256 (or above) color VGA card is required. VGA with DCI or
  31.      DirectDraw support is recommended.
  32.   5. 8MB system memory is required.

  37.   After starting up Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 operating system, insert
  38.   VCD PowerPlayer diskette into the floppy drive. Then, execute 
  39.   a:\setup.exe (or b:\setup.exe) by double-clicking setup.exe file in
  40.   drive 'a' (or 'b') under File-Manager program).

  45.     After completely installing VCD PowerPlayer under Windows 3.1,
  46.   the user can see PowerPlayer group icon under Program Manager. By
  47.   double clicking PowerPlayer icon, the PowerPlayer group window is
  48.   shown. By double clicking VCD PowerPlayer icon, this program is
  49.   executed and the front panel is presented on the screen.

  51.     Under Windows 95 operating system, press START button in the lower-
  52.   left corner first. Then, choose Program, PowerPlayer, and VCD PowerPlayer
  53.   to start the program.

  59.   DCI     DCI (Display Control Interface) is a display control standard
  60.           under Windows 3.1. If your VGA card supports DCI, please
  61.           select this option.
  62.   DDraw   DirectDraw is a video control standard under Windows 95. If
  63.           your VGA card supports DirectDraw, please select this option.
  64.   WinG    WinG is a fast displaying standard under Windows 3.1. By using
  65.           WinG, the picture quality is worse and the performance is
  66.           lower comparing to those of DCI or DirectDraw.
  67.   GDI     GDI is a display standard under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95
  68.           which achieves the worst performance among the four methods.

  88.   Q:      While playing VCD under Windows 95, the speed is very slow and
  89.           the audio is break into segments. Why?
  90.   A:      Most of these situations are caused by the conflict of IDE
  91.           devices which connected to the same IDE bus. Your computer may
  92.           be equipped with one IDE hard-disk and one IDE CD-ROM drive
  93.           and these two devices are connected to the same IDE cable.
  94.           There is a bug in Window 95 to handle such a situation. The
  95.           CD-ROM driver provided by Windows 95 dumbly tries to issue
  96.           seek command on every CD-ROM read request. It slows down the
  97.           performance. There are two ways to solve this problem: one is
  98.           to ask the technician to move one IDE device to another IDE
  99.           cable; the other is to download 'iosupd.exe' from Microsoft
  100.           ftp site and execute it. This is a patch program for the
  101.           CD-ROM device driver.

  103.   Q:      VCD PowerPlayer cannot play CD-I under Windows 95, why?
  104.   A:      Windows 95 Compact Disc File System (CDFS) does not support
  105.           CD-I format such that LinkMPEG can not read the data on the
  106.           CD-I disc.

  108.   Q:      Why can't I execute VCD PowerPlayer under 16 color display mode?
  109.   A:      Most of VGA cards do not support DCI (DirectDraw) under 16
  110.           color mode, and VCD PowerPlayer does not support GDI and WinG
  111.       display under 16 color mode either. Please change display mode
  112.       to 256 color or higher.

  114.   Q:      VCD PowerPlayer can not use DCI (DirectDraw) under hi-color
  115.           display mode or hi-resolution display mode, why?
  116.   A:      Under hi-color display mode or hi-resolution display mode, the
  117.           display occupies most of the display memory (which is on the
  118.           VGA card). Such that there is not enough display memory to be
  119.           used while using DCI (DirectDraw) functions. Then, DCI
  120.           (DirectDraw) is turned off. Please set it to low color display
  121.           mode (e.g. 256 color) or low resolution mode (e.g. 800x600).
  122.           Another way to solve this problem is to expand the display
  123.           memory on your VGA card.
