- SUBJECT : Two Netbios Problems
- DATE : 6/11/90
- FYI # : 061190sc

- SHELL VERSION :
-
- PROBLEM : Certain NetBIOS applications could hang
- the workstation under heavy I/O operations. The following items
- were common to the customers we have worked with:
- 1. Use of Novell NetWare.
- 2. Use of Novell NetBIOS.
- 3. Use of some type of application written for NetBIOS.
- 4. Use of Soloman database server application.
-
- SOLUTION : The problem was stack size. The database
- server application did not have a stack size large enough to
- handle things properly. The vendor is going to adjust the stack
- size appropriately.
-
- PROBLEM : Customers have expressed a need for the
- ability to use more than the number of names currently allowed
- by NetBIOS.
-
- SOLUTION : NetBIOS originally allowed only sixteen
- names to be defined in a local name table. In rev C., the size
- of the local name table was changed to accomodate up to
- twenty-six names. Now, customers are wanting the ability to have
- more names (in some cases they want to have 100 names). Since the
- size of the name table is determined by the number of names
- allowed in the table, and thus the amount of memory to be used
- for this table, we decided that we would increase the number of names
- from sixteen to twenty-six.
-
- As an enhancement to some future release of NetBIOS, the size of the
- local name table will be user configurable by the use of a parameter
- in the SHELL.CFG file (NETBIOS NAMES = X, where X = the number of names
- desired). The maximum and default values for this parameter have not been
- set.
