- ICON/NVL 386 for NW386 v3.0
- Readme file for NW386 Supplemental Drivers
-
- Overview
- ICON/NVL 386 is a Novell certified NetWare Loadable Module (NLM)
- for a NetWare 386 network. ICON/NVL 386 provides a shared memory
- interface to a virtual disk environment in the ICON Intelligent
- Disk Servers. Being a virtual environment, the NVL interface will
- always provide a perfect disk to the Novell operating system. The
- driver is identical across our entire family of Intelligent Disk
- Servers. ICON/NVL 386 can be run with all generic NetWare 386
- software.
-
- Associated Files
- Two files are on the ICON/NVL 386 diskette. The SMDISK.DSK file is
- the NetWare 386 driver. STARTUP.NCF is included only as a sample
- of a STARTUP file that can be created after the ICON/NVL 386 driver
- is loaded.
-
- Loading Instructions
- SMDISK.DSK driver supports several different memory and interrupt
- configurations as well as a Transactional Tracking System (TTS)
- Option. After SERVER.EXE is loaded, the following command can be
- issued at the network prompt:
-
- load [path\]smdisk mem=<mem start add>:<mem blk size> int=<interrupt>
- tts=<on/off>
-
- Memory Location and Size
- The first parameter is the memory location and size. A number of
- memory locations are supported in the driver including several
- locations in extended memory for the new 16 bit Target Cards. The
- memory address must correspond to the RAM setting on the SMILE
- Target card followed by a colon. The memory size, is entered in
- hexidecimal numbers after the colon. The memory size is denoted as
- shown below, according to the model number of ICON Target card:
-
- 8000 = 32K
- 10000 = 64K
- 20000 = 128K (for 16 bit Target Card)
-
- The ICON/SMILE Target card comes in four different models.
- The last three or four digits of the part number indicate the
- model number:
-
- 810-032-002 = 64k only
- 810-032-005 = 64k only
- 810-032-006 = 32k or 64k options
- 810-032-006A = 32k or 64k options
-
- For example, if the SMILE Target card's RAM address is D0000 and
- the card is configured for 32K, the memory parameter following
- SMDISK would be 8000. The command would be entered as:
-
- load smdisk mem=d0000:8000
-
- Interrupt Setting
- Currently, four different primary interrupts are supported: 15, 10,
- 11, 12. These interrupts are represented to the driver by a
- hexidecimal equivalent. If the SMILE Target card is configured
- with interrupt 15 for example, the interrupt parameter following
- the memory parameter would be int=f (hexidecimal f = decimal 15).
- Likewise, with the card configured at interupt 11, the entry would
- be made as int=b (hexidecimal b = decimal 11).
-
- load smdisk mem=d0000:8000 int=f
-
- TTS Option
- ICON/NVL 386 supports Novell's Transaction Tracking System (TTS)
- feature on all systems. Turning the ICON/NVL 386 TTS option on
- (which is the default setting) turns off the ICON Intelligent Disk
- Server cache and allows all writes to go directly to disk.
- Currently, there is no way to distinguish a TTS write from a
- regular write, so with the ICON/NVL 386 TTS option on, all writes
- will go directly to disk. As a result, performance will decrease.
- Turning TTS off will allow the data to be written to the disk
- server cache memory. The system will perform faster, however,
- there are data loss risks introduced if power to the disk server
- was lost. Therefore, we recommend that a UPS be installed with the
- Intelligent Disk Server. NetWare 386 version 3.1 will provide a
- special flag for TTS writes which will allow ICON/NVL 386 to
- distinguish between writes. To turn TTS off, the parameter tts=off
- should follow the interrupt parameter when the LOAD SMDISK
- command is issued. Please note that Novell's TTS feature will
- continue to function under either option.
-
- load smdisk mem=d0000:8000 int=f tts=off
-
- Once the LOAD SMDISK command has been executed, the driver will
- notify NetWare of the number of available drives and a prompt will
- be displayed on the file server monitor. The 'load INSTALL' command
- can then be executed to perform the normal disk and volume operations.
- The INSTALL NLM will allow the installer to configure a STARTUP.NCF
- file so that manual loading of ICON/NVL 386 will not be necessary again.
- Please note that when the "Create STARTUP.NCF" option under the
- INSTALL NLM is used for the first time, the memory size parameter will
- need to be added to the information displayed on the screen.
