- * What is an ANNUNCIATOR? *
-
-
- Simple ANNUNCIATORS have been in existence for many years but never
- described as ANNUNCIATORS. An example is a simple doorbell, it attracts
- your attention to the door via an audible sound. A simple definition
- of an ANNUNCIATOR might be as follows: "A device through which one or more
- senses alerts an operator to the fact that something is either wrong with
- a given situation or appraises him to a condition which exists requiring
- attentive action."
-
- A basic ANNUNCIATOR utilizes Visual and/or Audible to attract attention
- to it. The Audible attracts the attention of the operator to look at the
- ANNUNCIATOR and the Visual Light tells the operator which point is in alarm.
- The Audible is important because the operator may not be looking at the
- ANNUNCIATOR at time of alarm.
-
- Here is an EXAMPLE of an ALARM Point:
-
- A heater motor which runs continuously suddenly stops. The relay
- hooked up to the heater motor De-energizes closing the input contact
- associated with it thus changing state which triggers a ANNUCIATOR
- window. The window marked "HEATER MOTOR FAIL" begins to Flash Red
- and an Audible begins to sound. The operator upon hearing the Audible
- checks the ANNUNCIATOR windows and sees the Flashing Red window. He
- then ACKNOWLEDGES the ANNUNCIATOR by pressing a ACKNOWLEDGE button
- which turns off the Audible and turns the Flashing Red window to a
- Steady Red window. The operator uses a walkie-talkie to tell field
- maintenance man that the "HEATER MOTOR" has shut down. The field
- maintenance man checks the motor to find that a circuit breaker caused
- the shut down. He repairs the breaker and re-starts the motor which
- energizes the contact to its normal state. The operator hears the
- Audible again and sees that the "HEATER MOTOR FAIL" window now is
- Flashing Yellow which means the motor has returned to a normal state.
- The operator presses a RESET button and the window returns to normal.
-
- Using your imagination, the above scenario is just one of thousands of
- ways an ANNUNCIATOR can be used. Other more simplier uses may be a Security
- System monitoring doors and windows at night, using it as a Status indicator
- monitoring a flow process for interuptions. ANNUNCIATORS have been used for
- many years in places such as Nuclear Power Plants and Waste Water Treatment
- because they provide a Cost Effective Way of monitoring critical areas of
- processes.

-
- * SYSTEM REQUIRMENTS *
-
-
- THE C. O. P. software was programed,designed and tested on a TANDY
- 1000 TX computer. It should work on any PC or compatible but it has
- not been tested. It requires the use of 2- joystick ports, at least
- 256k ram,1- disk drive (For SPEED a Hard drive is recommended), and
- optional printer(LPT1) port.
- Your CONFIG.SYS should have FILES=20, BUFFERS=20.
-
- * EXTERNAL WIRING *
- *DO NOT ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING IF YOU ARE NOT ELECTRICALLY INCLINED*
-
- Wiring of Joystick Ports should be per WIREA.SCH (for port A) and
- WIREB.SCH (for port B). 100K ohm Resistors should be wired as close
- to the computer joystick ports as possible. The field contact Resistors
- should be wired as close to the switches as possible. The contact switches
- must be TOTALLY ISOLATED from any voltage source other then the computers.
- Wiring to the Field Contacts should be NO more then a 200 foot Loop and
- 20 or 22 gage stranded wire should be used. After Wiring is completed,
- check to make sure NO induced voltage or any other current source is in
- the wiring by using a VOLT METER. (Example of 200 foot Loop: Wire from
- (X)axis to Switch 1 (90 feet), then to Switch 2 (10 feet),then returned
- to (-)minus/common (100 feet), Total 200 Feet.(Only tested for 200 foot
- Loop, may work on longer loops.)) Voltage in wiring is Only 5 volts.
-
- **CAUTION**
- DO NOT USE EARTH GROUND OR GROUND THE (-)MINUS PIN TO ANY OTHER GROUND OR
- MINUS!.WIRING TO COMPUTER PORTS MUST BE ISOLATED FROM ALL OTHER SOURCES.
-
- There are 4 connections to be made to each joystick port. You must find
- out which pins are the (X)axis,(Y)axis,(+)plus, and (-)negative/common.
- After you have wired ,and CHECKED WIRING, you then need to run the program
- IOSETUP.EXE. This program will calibrate the resistance in the wiring and
- produce a file IOSET.DAT which THE C. O. P. will search for.
-
-
- * INSTALLING THE C. O. P. *
-
- After hooking up external wiring (REF:EXTERNAL WIRING) ,at the DOS prompt,
- type THECOPV1 MENU and set up all the options. After options are set press
- (Q)uit and you will be asked to Run DEMO. I recommend you use the demo to
- understand the KEYS and learn the Annunciator. To RUN the ANNUNCIATOR
- Type THECOPV1 ALARM at the DOS prompt.
-
-
- * COMMAND LINE TAIL *
-
- At DOS prompt:
- THECOPV1 MENU (Menu Set-up)
- THECOPV1 DEMO (Demo Mode)
- THECOPV1 ALARM (ANNUNCIATOR)
- THECOPV1 (Will tell you the above)

-
- (A)cknowledge press this after a window goes into ALARM
- (R)eset press this after window returns to NORMAL
- (P)rinter togle press this after a printer ERROR to restore event mode
- (F)ile togle press this after disk ERROR to restore event mode
- (V)oice press this to turn ON/OFF voice option.(only when MENUed)
- (Shift+X) press this to refress screen (only when no alarms)
- (Q)uit press this to leave THE C. O. P. (only when no alarms)
- (The above controls depend on the Options set in the MENU)

- * THE AUTHOR *
-
-
- Between the years 1981 thru 1987, I was fortunate enough to work for one
- of the leaders in the instrumentation field. During these years, I learned
- a great deal about the requirments and uses of Annunciators and Monitors.
- One aspect I have learned is you never can have enough protection.
- COMMERCIAL Annunciators range from $1,000 on up to $20,000 and above.
- I have designed THE C. O. P. Annunciator Software not to replace these

-
- Commercial Annunciators, BUT to complement them and to provide a more
- COST EFFECTIVE method of monitoring. THE C. O. P. Annunciator is an
- ideal method for monitoring other Annunciators or it can be used as a
- a Personal Home Alarm system or a simple door monitor.
- Since 1981 the home computer market has increased and every year the
- computers become faster and more economical to own. If your like me,
- you have an OLD PC collecting dust in the closet or using it as a talk
- piece in your living room of your home, THE C. O. P. can turn that old
- dust collector and/or show piece into a usable piece of equipment again,
- even if it's just to watch your doors and windows open and close!.
-
- I am very intereseted in your comments pertaining to THE C. O. P.
- What you like, what you don't like and of course, what features you
- would like to see in future installments.
-
- If you have a problem setting up or running THE C. O. P., send a S.A.S.E
- and a detailed description of your problem and I will be more then happy
- to reply.(Registered users take Precedent over NON-Registered users)
