- DESCRIPTION
- USER PRODUCTIVITY
- The new PS/2 Model 25 286 introduces increased processor speed and
- function into the Model 25 family of small, compact systems. The
- 80287 Math Co-Processor, 4MB of planar memory, and 30MB fixed disk
- allow the user to run the simplest of education programs or more
- complex business type programs requiring the Operating System/2 (TM)
- (OS/2 (R)) operating system. The 12-inch VGA color monitor provides
- increased screen resolution for easier viewing. The Model 25 286 can
- be used either as a stand-alone terminal or as a local area network
- (LAN) workstation.
- (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
- (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
- Corporation.
- INVESTMENT PROTECTION
- Based on the 80286 microprocessor, the PS/2 Model 25 286 may be
- considered a long-term, reliable system solution. The Model 25 286
- supports a wide range of IBM and non-IBM programs and applications,
- I/O devices, and features and accessories, which the customer may
- already have available. (Refer to ATTACHMENT A for a detailed
- listing).
- The system can be increased to 4MB on the planar and can
- address up to a maximum of 16MB. The user has the option to migrate
- to the OS/2 operating system.
- BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
- The PS/2 Model 25 286 is an excellent low-cost, high performance
- workstation for a stand-alone or network environment. The 10MHz
- 80286 microprocessor, 80287 Math Co-Processor, 16MB maximum
- addressability, 30MB fixed disk, and the compatibility of a wide
- range of features and software make the Model 25 286 particularly
- adaptable for educational institutions or training environments.
- This model can also provide a business solution for office or small
- business users. The 4MB memory capability on the system board allows
- the user to run most DOS application programs and increase system
- performance through the disk cache program included on the PS/2
- Model 25 286 Starter Diskette.

- the PS/2 Model 25 286:
- o OS/2 Extended Edition 1.1 or 1.2
- o OS/2 Standard Edition 1.1 or 1.2
- o IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 3.3 or 4.0.
- NOTE: The PS/2 Model 25 286 will accommodate a subset of OS/2
- Extended Edition 1.2 functions and may limit the use of some
- associated customer applications and data. Refer to the IBM
- OPERATING SYSTEM/2 PLANNING AND INFORMATION GUIDE (G360-2650) for
- additional information.
- COMPATIBILITY: The Personal System/2 Model 25 286 is compatible with
- the IBM Personal Computer, Personal Computer XT (TM) and Personal
- Computer AT (R) (AT (R)) at the BIOS interface level (BIOS not
- identical) and at most hardware interfaces. The Model 25 286 has
- been designed to maintain compatibility with existing personal
- computer software and non-timing dependent features. Due to the high
- level of integration, features such as IBM Personal Computer XT and
- Personal Computer AT memory upgrades and graphic adapters are not
- supported. Specific hardware products, features and software
- products tested and supported in the Model 25 286 environment are
- listed in ATTACHMENT A. The Model 25 286 has not been tested with
- all non-IBM features/options. Additional information on the
- interface and attachment requirements may be obtained by reviewing
- the IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 25 286 TECHNICAL REFERENCE
- (S15F-2182) manual, which can be ordered through IBM or an IBM
- Authorized Dealer.
- (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
- (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
- Corporation.
- LIMITATIONS: The ability to use a non-IBM memory expansion card in
- the IBM Personal System/2 Model 25 286 is dependent on the
- flexibility of the card in establishing its starting memory address.
- The amount of planar memory (standard plus kits) and the
- corresponding starting memory address is illustrated in the following
- table:
- PLANAR EXPANSION CARD
- MEMORY STARTING ADDRESS
- 512KB 512KB
- 1MB 1MB +384KB
- 2MB 2MB +384KB
- 4MB 4MB +384KB
- Memory expansion cards must support the listed starting
- address to properly operate in a system with a given amount of planar
- memory.
- DOS 3.3 mode does not support 19,200 baud on the Model 25 286.
- DOS 4.0 supports 19,200 baud on the Model 25 286.
- USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: The announced product addresses numerous
- customer requests and satisfies (partially or fully) requirements
- submitted by IBM User Groups.
- PLANNING INFORMATION
- CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Model 25 286 is designated as
- customer setup (CSU). CSU allowance is one day.
- CABLE ORDERS: No cables are required, other than for system power
- and keyboard connections. Cables are provided with the system unit
- and keyboard, and the instructions are provided as part of initial
- setup.
- INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user
- attaches the keyboard and peripherals and inserts the Reference
- Diskette. Power is turned on and Set Configuration is run after the
- computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests.
- The PS/2 Model 25 286 has a universal power supply with an external
- switch and may, therefore, be used worldwide. Additionally, there
- are no setup switches.
- PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial
- installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test
- is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating
- system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the
- system attempts to load one from the C fixed disk drive. If an
- operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a
- diskette via an icon. A final default is provided through the use of
- a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the GUIDE TO
- OPERATIONS.
- The troubleshooting procedures consist of a power-on self test,
- diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow troubleshooting charts designed
- to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The
- failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing
- warranty provisions.
