- Decathlon is now available for the
- PC. You and as many as five fellow
- keyboard athletes compete against
- Bruce Jenner's 1976 performance in
- the ten decathlon events for the
- title of "World's Greatest Athlete".
- The events are the 100-Meter Dash,
- Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump,
- 400-Meter Dash, 110 Meter Hurdles,
- Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin
- Throw and 1500-Meter Run.
-
- Decathlon makes excellent use of the
- PC's graphics and sound with the most
- realistic animation I've seen on the
- machine, including such small details
- as the landing foam bouncing in the
- high jump and the sound of the pole
- vault falling onto the track. The
- opening credits and Olympic Theme are
- almost worth the purchase price;
- however they can be skipped if you
- desire.
-
- The disk is self-booting and you may
- make one backup copy. Before the
- competition begins, players can
- practice any or all events as many
- times as they wish. Practice is
- recommended since nearly all of the
- events require a surprising amount of
- coordination and timing, particularly
- the shot put, discus and 400-meter
- run. Running speed in the events
- depends upon how fast you can
- alternately push two keys, and the
- hurdles add the requirement of timing
- your keypresses with the runners
- feet. The jumping and vaulting events
- allow you to vary the approach length
- and speed, as well as the angle of
- your jump. The discus and javelin are
- even more complicated, with several
- well-timed keypresses required for
- optimum performance.
-
- Scoring is the same as Olympic
- scoring, with each of the top three
- medalists taking the stand at the end
- of the competition to receive their
- medals. Flags of the medalists'
- countries are raised in triumph
- behind the figures as the Olympic
- Theme plays in the background. If a
- contestant manages to top Bruce
- Jenner's decathlon score, his or her
- score will be saved to disk.
-
- Each event is self-documenting and a
- continuous performance ranking is
- available at the press of the ESC
- key. The written documentation adds a
- description of the scoring method as
- well as back-up procedures.
-
- Decathlon is the only real group
- participation game I know of for the
- PC. However, even if you can't get a
- group together to play, Bruce Jenner
- is always waiting in the blocks to
- compete!
