  6. Decathlon is now available for the
  7. PC. You and as many as five fellow
  8. keyboard athletes compete against
  9. Bruce Jenner's 1976 performance in
  10. the ten decathlon events for the
  11. title of "World's Greatest Athlete".
  12. The events are the 100-Meter Dash,
  13. Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump,
  14. 400-Meter Dash, 110 Meter Hurdles,
  15. Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin
  16. Throw and 1500-Meter Run.

  18. Decathlon makes excellent use of the
  19. PC's graphics and sound with the most
  20. realistic animation I've seen on the
  21. machine, including such small details
  22. as the landing foam bouncing in the
  23. high jump and the sound of the pole
  24. vault falling onto the track. The
  25. opening credits and Olympic Theme are
  26. almost worth the purchase price;
  27. however they can be skipped if you
  28. desire.

  30. The disk is self-booting and you may
  31. make one backup copy.  Before the
  32. competition begins, players can
  33. practice any or all events as many
  34. times as they wish. Practice is
  35. recommended since nearly all of the
  36. events require a surprising amount of
  37. coordination and timing, particularly
  38. the shot put, discus and 400-meter
  39. run.  Running speed in the events
  40. depends upon how fast you can
  41. alternately push two keys, and the
  42. hurdles add the requirement of timing
  43. your keypresses with the runners
  44. feet. The jumping and vaulting events
  45. allow you to vary the approach length
  46. and speed, as well as the angle of
  47. your jump. The discus and javelin are
  48. even more complicated, with several
  49. well-timed keypresses required for
  50. optimum performance.

  52. Scoring is the same as Olympic
  53. scoring, with each of the top three
  54. medalists taking the stand at the end
  55. of the competition to receive their
  56. medals. Flags of the medalists'
  57. countries are raised in triumph
  58. behind the figures as the Olympic
  59. Theme plays in the background. If a
  60. contestant manages to top Bruce
  61. Jenner's decathlon score, his or her
  62. score will be saved to disk.

  64. Each event is self-documenting and a
  65. continuous performance ranking is
  66. available at the press of the ESC
  67. key. The written documentation adds a
  68. description of the scoring method as
  69. well as back-up procedures.

  71. Decathlon is the only real group
  72. participation game I know of for the
  73. PC.  However, even if you can't get a
  74. group together to play, Bruce Jenner
  75. is always waiting in the blocks to
  76. compete!
