- Purpose of User Groups

- Capital PC Users Group
-
- What good is a user group? Who do
- they help? Why should they exist?
- What do they do (and for whom)?
-
- A user group is an opportunity for
- persons with common interests to
- share experiences, take advantage of
- pockets of expertise in their
- community, share public domain
- software, combine forces to purchase
- related hardware and software in
- volume at attractive prices, create
- a collective voice that should be
- heard at corporate levels, and apply
- appropriate pressure on a developing
- market.
-
- The user group benefits the members
- in many ways. Getting started,
- selecting the "right" hardware and
- software, taking advantage of
- reviews of both hardware and
- software to make better investments,
- using software exchange programs and
- information for fun and learning,
- buying needed items at group rates,
- keeping up on the latest
- developments and coming attractions
- through the meetings and magazine,
- getting help from other members,
- meeting in smaller groups for
- special interest purposes, finding
- others doing the same types of
- things for business and social
- purposes, and just generally having
- fun are just a few of the benefits
- of user group membership.
-
- The manufacturers, developers, and
- vendors benefit from the activities
- of the group in more subtle ways.
- The user group's ability to generate
- a market is just one of them. When
- the group gets interested in a
- really good piece of hardware or
- software, that item becomes
- something in demand. Vendors who
- provide after-the-sale support and
- real help soon develop a good
- reputation.
-
- The PC has become something more
- than it was originally intended to
- be. It is a small business system, a
- stand alone minicomputer with very
- powerful capabilities, a dumb, smart
- or very smart terminal, and a
- consumer product. All of these
- things make it hard for support
- organizations to develop complete
- support. It becomes necessary for
- manufacturers, service
- organizations, and vendors to become
- more creative than they've been
- accustomed to being. People are
- using these computers who are not
- computer specialists. The market is
- just demanding more than was
- expected.
-
- User groups exist because there is a
- real need that is not being filled
- in any other way, and I'm glad to
- state that user groups are meeting
- and filling these needs.
