  1. Don't Degauss your Diskettes

  6. Many color monitors (and all color
  7. TV sets) have a degaussing coil
  8. around the face of the tube. This is
  9. used to de-magnetize the shadow mask
  10. inside when the monitor is turned
  11. on.  It is connected directly to the
  12. AC line and is controlled by a
  13. thermistor which passes a gigantic
  14. surge of juice and then tapers off
  15. to nothing as it warms up.

  17. To demonstrate this, put the color
  18. monitor right next to your
  19. monochrome display.  When you turn
  20. the monitor on, the monochrome
  21. display goes "BOINNNNG" and then
  22. steadies down.

  24. If you keep your diskettes anywhere
  25. near (say, within a foot) of the
  26. front of the color monitor, they're
  27. exposed to a real shot of AC
  28. magnetic field  every time you turn
  29. on the monitor.  This isn't a good
  30. idea, since the field is designed to
  31. demagnetize things... the effect is
  32. cumulative and, unfortunately,
  33. irreversible.
