  1. Why Join A Users Group?

  6. Unlike buyers of most other equipment
  7. or appliances, first time owners of a
  8. computer system usually know little
  9. about computers before they buy that
  10. system.
  11.  
  12. They have heard about computers from
  13. friends or business acquaintances,
  14. have seen them whirring away at the
  15. office doing all kinds of neat
  16. things, and have come to the
  17. conclusion that they have to own one.
  18.  
  19. For novices, and often for more
  20. experienced operators, the amount and
  21. quality of help received after
  22. getting the machine home will decide
  23. whether they will realize the full
  24. value of their purchase or if it will
  25. sit and gather dust.

  27. Unfortunately, many computer
  28. retailers offer help after the
  29. purchase of the computer only if you
  30. purchase it at the store.  Other
  31. sources of help include books,
  32. manuals, friendly computer whizzes,
  33. courses and users groups.
  34.  
  35. Not all of these sources are equally
  36. helpful. The best way to get to know
  37. your computer is to sit down at the
  38. keyboard and put it through its
  39. paces, preferably with your friendly
  40. computer whiz at your elbow.

  42. The next best thing to a computer
  43. whiz beside you, is a friendly users
  44. group.  Members of a users group
  45. generally own a computer or are
  46. seriously considering buying one.

  48. As a newcomer to computers, you will
  49. feel bombarded at first, but you'll
  50. pick up jargon soon enough and then
  51. you'll really start to learn from the
  52. other members.  All of them at one
  53. time were also beginners and have
  54. faced the same doubts and problems
  55. you face now.

  57. Other advantages in associating with
  58. a users group are:

  60. 1.  You will be able to discuss
  61.     hardware or software problems and
  62.     get your questions answered, and
  63.     sometimes you can try out
  64.     machines or peripherals before
  65.     you buy.

  67. 2.  You may trade some public domain
  68.     programs with other members.
  69.  
  70. 3.  You may participate in user
  71.     group-sponsored training sessions
  72.     at very reduced rates.
  73.  
  74. 4.  You may receive discounts from
  75.     various vendors, based upon your
  76.     user group membership.
  77.  
  78. 5.  You will receive monthly
  79.     newsletters which can be very
  80.     helpful to the expert as well as
  81.     the novice.

  83. Active participation by ALL members
  84. of a users group ensures the success
  85. of the group. If the group discussion
  86. is above your head, don't be afraid
  87. to ask them to explain what they are
  88. talking about in terms  you
  89. understand. In the high tech area of
  90. computers, it is all too easy to
  91. lapse into jargon without realizing
  92. it.

  96. will be doing yourself and others a
  97. service.
