à 8.4èQuotation Marks
ä:èUnderline the sentences in the Example that are
correctly punctuated before and after quotation marks.
âS:
êëJeremiah said, "You are a phony".
êëPaul whispered ", Give us a break."
#êë╕Robert complained, "You have hurt our feelings."
éS A comma is required before a direct quote preceded by verbs like
#╖said, stated, stuttered, restated, replied, responded, repeated,╗ etc.
If the direct quote comes at the end of the declarative sentence, that
is, a sentence that ends in a period, then that period must come before
the last quotation mark, not after it--even if the direct quote is no
#more than one short word.ïExamine the declarative sentence ╖Roger
#╖replied, "Yes."ï╗The comma is correctly positioned in front of the
quotation mark, and the period is correctly positioned before the final
quotation mark.ïNote that a direct quote that is a complete thought
must begin with a capital letter.
1.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïJeff murmured "I have to leave."
B)ïSue stated ", You lied to me".
C)ïRalph responded, "I am your man."
D)ïå
#üèThe correctly punctuated sentence is ╢Ralph responded, "I am
#╢your man."ï╢I am your man ╗is appropriately put in quotation marks.
#The comma is needed after ╢responded ╗and before the first quotation
mark, and the period is essential before the end quotation mark.
In another sentence, there are two punctuation errors of omission.
#A comma is needed after ╖murmured ╗to introduce the direct quote; and
the second quotation marker needs to be placed after the period to
complete the direct quote.ïIn the remaining sentence, the comma in-
correctly comes after the first quotation mark, and the period in-
correctly follows the end quotation mark.

2.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïSally repeated "I am unhappy with your performance."
B)ïThe man with the microphone said, "Let's clap for the President."
C)ïI am not sure if I understand the meaning of the last word he
è used, Sesquipedalion".
D)ïå
#üèThe sentence containing the comma after ╢said ╗and the period
#after ╢President╗ is correctly punctuated.ïAppropriately, the comma
precedes the first quotation mark, and the period precedes the end
#quotation mark.ïIn another sentence, a comma needs to be added after ╖
#╖repeated╗.ïIn the remaining sentence, the period incorrectly placed
after the end quotation mark needs to go in front of it.
Ç B
3.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïBeulah mumbled, "I am lonely".
B)ïBrenda always says, "The government is my best source of income."
C)ïBetty replied, "I owe you a favor"
D)ïå
ü
êïå of ç sentences are correctly punctuated.ïA period
#after the end quotation mark should be placed after the word ╖lonely╗.
In another sentence, the comma after the first punctuation mark should
be omitted.ïIn the remaining sentence, there is no period after
#╖favor╗, just inside the quotation mark.

ä:èIn the Example underline the sentences that are
correctly punctuated.
#âS:è╕Did he say, "Remove the bolt for now"?
#êë╗Did she ask "Will you rid me of this pest"?
#êë╗Is it true that Susan asked, "Is Fredrico the anonymous
#êë╗donor?"?
#êë╕Did they inquire, "What if Judy is not the one responsible
#êë╕for the oversight?╗êë ╗
éS If a direct quote that contains a question comes at the end of a
declarative or an interrogative sentence, a question mark is inserted
#before the end quotation mark, as in the declarative sentence ╖Audrey
#╖asked, "Have you a copy of this statement?" ╗or the interrogative sen-
#tence ╖Did you reply, "How am I to know who was the mastermind?"╗ïIn
each case the question mark precedes the end quotation mark.ïIf a
direct quote that does not contain a question comes at the end of an
interrogative sentence, the question mark is placed after the end
#quotation mark, as in ╖Did Tom say, "I'm going to the court house
#╖today"?
4.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïDid Claudius respond, "Is my sister alone"?
B)ïDid Jean reply, "I'm ready for the storm?"
C)ïDid Reynolds state, "Your garbage has no odor"?
D)ïå
#üèThe interrogative sentence ╢Did Reynolds state, "Your garbage
#╢has no odor"? ╗is correctly punctuated.ïThe question mark is placed
outside the direct quote because the direct quote is not a question.
The comma appropriately introduces the direct quote.ïIn another sen-
#tence, there is improper punctuation.ïThe direct quote ╖"Is my sister
#╖alone" ╗is a question contained in an interrogative sentence.ïThat
situation requires only one question mark inside, not outside, the end
quotation mark.ïIn the remaining sentence, the question mark placed
#inside the direct quote ╖I'm ready for the storm╗ is improper because
this is not a question.ïThe question mark should go outside the end
quote because the sentence itself is interrogative.

5.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïHas Paul asked, "Am I the one in trouble with the manager?"?
B)ïI repeated, "Isn't it obvious to you that our necktie doesn't
è match your shirt"?
C)ïI stammered, "Aren't you going to keep me on as department head?"
D)ïå
üèBecause the question mark in the interrogative direct quote
#╢╢╢╢"Aren't you going to keep me on as department head?" ╗comes inside
#the end quotation mark, the declarative sentence beginning with ╢I
#╢stammered ╗is correctly punctuated.ïThe sentence containing two
question marks, one directly preceding the end quotation mark and one
#╖╗directly following it, is incorrectly punctuated.ïNever can there be
a question mark inside and outside of an end quotation mark at the end
#of a sentence.ïThus in the sentence beginning ╖Has Paul asked,╗ because
the sentence itself and the quote are questions, the question mark is
placed inside the end quotation mark.ïIn the remaining sentence, the
#declarative sentence beginning with ╖I repeated╗ should not have a
question mark after the interrogative direct quote that completes the
sentence.ïThe question mark should directly precede the end quotation
mark in the direct quote.
Ç C
6.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïDid you say, "It's time to drop the bomb?"
B)ïBrent repeated, "Don't you see the importance of your basket-weaving
è skills"
C)ïI never asked, "Did they steal my flashlight batteries"?
D)ïå
üèå of the sentences are correctly punctuated.ïBecause the
#╢╢╢╢╗sentence beginning with ╖Did you say ╗is an interrogative sentence
containing a declarative sentence within the direct quote, the question
#╢╗mark should go outside, not inside, the end quotation mark.ïIn the
#declarative sentence beginning ╖Brent repeated, ╗the direct quote is a
#╖╗question, but there is no end punctuation.ïA question mark needs to b
placed directly inside the end quotation mark.ïIn the remaining sen-
tence, a question mark incorrectly ends the declarative sentence be-
#ginning with ╖I never asked╗: the question mark should be placed after
the question in the direct quote, right before the end quotation mark.
Ç D
ä:èIn the Example, underline the sentences that are
correctly punctuated.
âS:
#êè ╕He shouted, "Evacuate the building immediately!"
#êè ╕Curse him for saying, "My darling Nancy"!
#êè ╗╗To the Neo-Nazi, He replied, "Lick up your own vomit"!
éS Exclamation points work the same way as question marks do in
relation to direct quotes at the end of a sentence.ïIf the sentence is
an exclamatory sentence, and the direct quote also is an exclamation,
then only one exclamation point is used, right before the end quotation
#mark, as in ╖They cried, "Death to all traitors!"ï╗If the sentence is
not exclamatory, but the direct quote is an exclamation, as in
#╖Napoleon sincerely said, "Let them rot in Russia!"ï╗then the
exclamation mark goes directly in front of the end quotation mark.
If the sentence is exclamatory but the direct quote is not, then the
exclamation point goes just outside the end quotation mark, as in
#╖May you always be a bloodsucker for saying "The Empire has crushed
#╖freedom"!
7.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïIn the 1960's some people used to proclaim, "I'd rather be Red than
è dead!"
B)ïTexans still recall the famous cry, "Remember the Alamo"!
C)ïHere, take my blows because you lied when you said, "The captain is
è a spy!"
#üèThe sentence ending with the direct quote ╢"I'd rather be Red
#╢Than dead!" ╗is correctly punctuated.ïWith a comma the verb is appro-
priately set off from the direct quote. Because the sentence itself is
not an exclamation, but the direct quote is exclamatory, the exclam-
ation point is correctly placed at the end of the direct quote, just be-
fore the end quotation mark.ïIn another sentence, the direct quote
#╖"Remember the Alamo" ╗is the only exclamation.ïIncorrectly the exclam-
ation point is placed outside the end quotation mark.ïIt belongs just
#inside the end quotation mark, to the right of ╖Alamo.ï╗In the re-
maining sentence, the sentence is not exclamatory, but the direct quote
is.ïTherefore the exclamation point belongs outside, not inside, the
#end quotation mark completing the direct quote ╖"The captain is a spy."

8.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ïHe exclaimed, "Up with democracy!"!
B)ïWe roared, "String him up!"
C)ïBlacks during the early civil rights movement sang the song "Go
è down Moses"!
D)ïå
#üèThe sentence ╢We roared, "String him up!" ╗is correctly punc-
#╢╗tuated.ïThe comma needs to be separating the verb from the direct
quote.ïThe exclamation point before the end quotation mark is accurate
because the direct quote is an exclamation.ïIn another sentence, the
#exclamation point outside the exclamatory direct quote ╖"Up with
#╖democracy" ╗is incorrect.ïWhen both the sentence and the direct quote
#╖╗are exclamatory, only one exclamation point is used, the one directly
#before the end quotation mark.ïIn the remaining sentence, ╖"Go down
#╖Moses"╗ is exclamatory, but there is no exclamation point before the
end quotation mark.ïThe exclamation point after the end quotation mark
is incorrect because the sentence itself is not an exclamation.
Ç B
ä:èIn the Example, underline the sentences that are
correctly punctuated.
âS:
#êë╕He askedï"What will happen to me?" before he was executed.
êëShe screamed, "I hate you"! after she saw the python.
#êë╕"I am frozen on a lake of doubt," the orator said.
éS If a direct quote that is an exclamation or a question comes any-
where except at the end of a sentence, the exclamation point or question
mark will always be placed inside the end quotation mark.ïFurthermore,
no other punctuation markers can directly follow the end quotation mark
#as the sentence progresses.ïFor example, in ╖John inquired, "Amy, how
#╖much do you weigh?" although he should have known better, ╗the question
mark goes after the last word in the direct quote, just before the end
quotation mark, and no punctuation marker directly follows the end
#quotation mark as the sentence continues.ïSimilarly, in ╖He shouted,
#╖"Listen up!" without thinking of the consequences╗, the exclamation
point goes after the last word in the direct quote, just before the end
quotation mark; and no punctuation marker directly follows the end
quotation mark as the sentence continues.ïIf a declarative direct quote
begins a sentence, a comma is placed after the last word of the direct
#quote, just before the end quotation mark, as in ╖"I am not going to
#╖harm your hamster," he reasoned with her.
9.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ï"He makes a great deal of wool" said the sheep herder.
B)ï"I resent your insinuation!" snarled the circus ringmaster.
C)ï"What's your problem, Jude?", was Sal's puzzled question.
D)ïå
#üèThe sentence beginning with the direct quote ╢"I resent your
#╢insinuation" ╗is correctly punctuated.ïThe exclamation point is prop-
erly put just inside the end quotation mark, and no punctuation immedi-
ately follows the direct quote.ïIn another sentence, a comma needs to
#be added after the last word in the direct quote ╖"He makes a great deal
#╖of wool."ï╗In the remaining sentence, remove the comma after the end
#quotation mark in the direct quote ╖"What's your problem, Jude?"
Ç B
10.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ï"I know that his father gambles," stated the witness.
B)ïI heard him ask, "Are you the one who drank some of my milk"? before
è he shot a hole in the milk jug.
C)ï"Pay me what you owe me"! hollered the worker.
D)ïå
#üèThe sentence with the direct quote ╢"I ╢know that his father
#╢gambles" ╗is correctly punctuated.ïA comma is properly placed after
the last word of the direct quote, just before the end quotation mark.
In another sentence, both the question mark and the exclamation point
are misplaced.ïThe question mark should go in front of, not outside,
#the end quotation mark in the direct quote beginning with ╖"Are you the
#╖one."ï╗And the exclamation point should be placed directly inside, not
#outside, the end quotation mark in the direct quote beginning ╖"Pay me."
Ç A
11.èWhich one of the following sentences is correctly
punctuated?
A)ï"Go to blazes!", the soldier exclaimed.
B)ï"I like my doll's lipstick", Jane repeated.
C)ï"Why are you twisting your hair"? Carl asked.
D)ïå
#üèThe sentence beginning with the interrogative ╗quote ╢"Why are
#╢you twisting your hair"? ╗is punctuated correctly.ïThe question mark
goes directly outside the end quotation mark, and no other punctuation
directly follows as the sentence progresses.ïIn another sentence, the
#comma after the exclamation ╖"Go to blazes!" ╗should be omitted because
no punctuation immediately follows an exclamatory direct quote.ïIn the
#╖╗remaining sentence, a comma is misplaced after the direct quote ╖"I
#╖like my doll's lipstick."ï╗The comma should go directly inside the end
quotation mark, not outside, as is the case with all introductory
declarative direct quotes.
