- Installation and Uninstallation
- ==================================================================
-
- The demo requires approximately 140 MB of hard drive space. To
- install the demo, open the UndyingDemo.exe and follow the
- instructions. You have the option of choosing where to install
- and where to put the Start Menu shortcut.
-
- To uninstall, select "Uninstall Clive Barker's Undying(tm)-Demo"
- from the Windows Start menu.
-
- ==================================================================
- Hard Drive Space
- ==================================================================
-
- In addition to the installed game, Windows will require additional
- free hard drive space for its operating system (virtual memory).
- The amount of space required varies from 100 MB to 250 MB. If you
- have less than 250 MB free space you may encounter the following
- message in an error dialog:
-
- "Ran out of virtual memory"
-
- If you encounter this message, free up some hard drive space.
-
-
- ==================================================================
- Installing DirectX 8.0
- ==================================================================
-
- If you do not have DirectX 8.0 installed, the demo will give you
- the option of downloading and installing DirectX 8.0 before
- installing Undying. If you do not download DirectX 8.0 at that
- time, you can visit the web site later at
-
- http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
-
-
- ==================================================================
- Troubleshooting
- ==================================================================
-
- Safe Mode
-
- Safe mode can be accessed from the "Undying Safe Mode" link in
- your "Start" menu. It is provided as a means of isolating the
- cause of problems you may have with sound or video card drivers.
- When launching with safe mode, you can disable 3D video
- accelerator support or hardware support for sound cards in its
- menu. Note that while operating Clive Barker's Undying is
- possible with software-only rendering, the game is designed to
- use a 3D accelerator.
-
- DirectX 8.0
-
- It is highly recommended that you install DirectX 8.0 as it is
- known to resolve a number of video card and other issues.
-
- Video Card Drivers
-
- Some video card drivers do not support Direct3D correctly.
- Typical problems that may occur with these drivers include:
-
- - Crashing on starting up
- - Crashing when changing video resolutions
- - Corrupted textures
- - Garbage artifacts on screen
- - Unexpected bright flashing on screen
- - Unusually slow performance.
-
- The solution is to go to your video card manufacturer's website
- and download updated drivers for your card. It is highly
- recommended that, given an option, you download and install
- Microsoft-certified (WHQL) drivers.
-
- Matrox G400 and G450:
- In rare instances quitting and restarting the game will result
- in a black screen. When the computer is restarted, everything
- works fine again.
-
- Resolution of 1600x1200:
- A resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels is not fully supported and has
- been found to have problems with various video cards including
- Voodoo 5 and nVidia cards. When 1600x1200 is not possible the
- screen will revert back to a lower resolution without a prompt.
-
-
- ==================================================================
- Improving Gameplay Performance
- ==================================================================
-
- Some machines will benefit from experimenting with your
- video/sound options:
-
- - Try selecting "Low Texture Detail" from the "Advanced"
- menu selectable from the "Video" menu. This is
- particularly useful for computers with less than 128 MB
- of RAM.
-
- - Also from the "Advanced" video menu try lowering the
- "Quality" slider.
-
- - Also from the "Advanced" video menu try turning off
- shadows and decals.
-
- - Uncheck the "High Quality Sound" in the sound menu. Note
- that you must click "Ok" then exit and restart the game
- for this option to take
- effect.
-
- - If your video resolution is greater than 640x480, try
- reducing it to 640x480 in your video menu.
-
- - If your color bit depth is 32 bits, try reducing it to
- 16 bits in your video menu.
-
- - Try doing a "Typical" install if you did a "Compact"
- install. See the above section "Installation Options".
-
-
- ==================================================================
- Other Issues
- ==================================================================
-
- Sound:
-
- Turning on/off High Quality Sound or 3D Hardware from the Sound
- Menu does not change the sound quality until you quit out of the
- game and restart Undying.
-
- Ambient/Voiceover/SFX Sliders - located in the 'Audio' portion of
- the Shell, the user has the ability to adjust the volume control
- on Ambient, Voiceover and/or Sound Effects within gameplay by
- adjusting the appropriate sliders. However, adjusting the volume
- could greatly impact gameplay as many events, puzzles and clues
- key off sound as a method of player progression.
-
- EAX / A3D:
- Users who enable the "Use3DHardware" option may experience slight
- volume differences due to the fact that some of the sounds are
- being mixed in software and some are mixed in hardware.
-
- Keyboard Controls:
-
- Some PC keyboards cannot recognize certain combinations of 3 or
- more simultaneously pressed keys.
-
- Advanced Video Options:
-
- World Detail- Texture resolution of everything except for
- characters, creatures and objects.
- Skin Detail- Texture resolution of characters, creatures and
- objects.
- Quality- Minimum Quality of graphics to use in the game. Works
- with Desired FPS slider. See "Desired FPS" section below for
- more info.
- Desired FPS- Setting desired framerate sets the point at which
- detail is added or reduced -- if you are running above the
- desired framerate, detail will be added, if you are running below
- the desired framerate, detail will be reduced. Detail will never
- be increased beyond maximum, and it will never be reduced below
- the quality setting. So if you set your desired framerate very
- high and your minimum quality very low, you would expect to see
- all meshes in the game at very low detail in an attempt to reach
- your desired framerate.
-
- Advanced Control Options:
-
- LookSpring- If checked, releasing the mouselook key will
- automatically center the view. Only valid if Mouselook is
- disabled.
- Auto Slope- If checked, your view will automatically adjust to
- look up and down slopes and stairs. Only valid if Mouselook is
- disabled.
- AlwaysMouseLook- If checked, the mouse will always be used for
- controlling your view direction.
- AutoSwitchWeapons- If checked, the game will automatically switch
- to a weapon that you pickup if it has a higher rating.
- MouseDecel- If checked, the game disables Windows mouse movement
- acceleration.
- MouseSmoothing- If checked, the game filters mouse movement
- slightly.
