  46. ***** CREATING A RESCUE DISK SET *****
  47. You need three high-density floppy disks for the set, which will be
  48. formatted as part of the process. Don't use floppy disks with files
  49. you need to keep.  The rescue set is composed of the following disks:
  50.  
  51.   * Norton Rescue Boot Disk            Starts your computer.
  52.   * Norton AntiVirus Program Disk      Scans for and removes viruses.
  53.   * Norton AntiVirus Definitions Disk  Stores the virus definitions 
  54.                                        files used during scans.
  55.  
  56. To create or update your rescue disk set:
  57.  
  58.   * At the DOS prompt, type RESCUE and press Enter.
  59.  
  60. Follow the prompts. You will be notified when to change floppy disks.
  61. The entire procedure will take a few minutes. When the Norton AntiVirus
  62. rescue disk set is created, follow the instructions on the screen to
  63. label the disks, including the computer for which they were created
  64. and the date the set was made.  Write-protect the rescue disks and
  65. store them in a safe place.
  66.  
  67. To write-protect 3 1/2 inch disks, slide open the plastic tab on the
  68. back of the disk. To write-protect 5 1/4 inch disks, fold a small
  69. piece of opaque tape over the write-protect notch on the side of the
  70. disk. If you hold the disk in your left hand and look at the disk
  71. label, the notch is about 1 1/3 inches below the upper-right corner
  72. of the disk.

  74. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION ONLINE *****
  75. The Norton AntiVirus Automatic Protection TSR provides real-time
  76. protection to prevent virus-infected files from being downloaded
  77. from the Internet, bulletin boards, or other online services.  If
  78. this level of protection is not required, you can turn the protection
  79. off by disabling the Scan on Open and Scan on Create options in the
  80. Options - Auto-Protect Settings dialog box.
  81.  
  82. ***** WARM BOOT TRAP *****
  83. TSRs, device drivers, or programs that trap warm boots (Ctrl+Alt+Del)
  84. may override Automatic Protection's ability to check for boot viruses
  85. on floppy disks.  Likewise, programs that perform a warm boot without
  86. Ctrl+Alt+Del will bypass the automatic check for boot viruses.
  87.  
  88. ***** INOCULATION FILES *****
  89. The inoculation files are NAVSYS.DAT and NAVINOC.DAT.  They are stored
  90. in the NCDTREE directory by default.
  91.  
  92. ***** DOS ERROR LEVEL CODES *****
  93. In addition to the DOS error level codes listed in the "DOS Command-Line
  94. Switches" appendix of the User's Guide, the following error code can be 
  95. returned:
  96.  
  97.         Code    Error
  98.         255     Scan Not Completed
  99.  
  100. This error occurs usually when there is not enough memory to load
  101. Norton AntiVirus.  250K of memory is required.
  102.  
  103. ***** "AUTOPROTECT SELF-TEST FAILED" ERROR *****
  104. Although this error occurs in Windows, it is almost always caused by
  105. insufficient free conventional memory.  You need at least 475K of 
  106. conventional memory available before starting Windows.  To check the
  107. amount of conventional memory available, type "MEM /C" at a DOS prompt
  108. before starting Windows.  The value reported for "largest executable
  109. program size" must be greater than 475K.
  110.  
  111. ***** FILES STATEMENT IN CONFIG.SYS *****
  112. Norton AntiVirus requires that FILES be set to at least 15 in your
  113. CONFIG.SYS file.  During install, NAV makes sure the FILES statement
  114. in CONFIG.SYS is adequate for your hard disk boot.  If you boot from
  115. a floppy disk without this setting, Norton AntiVirus will fail to run
  116. and display the following message:  "The file NAV.EXE has been altered."
  117.  
  118. To boot from a floppy disk and be able to run Norton AntiVirus, make
  119. sure the floppy disk contains a CONFIG.SYS file with at least a
  120. "FILES=15" statement.
  121.  
  122. ***** SCANNING ZIP ARCHIVES *****
  123. The following limitations exist when scanning ZIP archives:
  124.  
  125.  * Password protected files in a ZIP archive (stored with the
  126.    PKZIP -s option) are not scanned.
  127.  
  128.  * Norton AntiVirus for DOS cannot scan ZIP archives with more than
  129.    about 1,000 files; the exact number of files depends on the
  130.    amount of available memory.
  131.  
  132. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND MEMORY OPTIMIZATION *****
  133. The automatic protection TSR does not require memory optimization to use
  134. UMBs efficiently.  If you are planning to optimize memory, we recommend
  135. doing so before installing Norton AntiVirus.  If Norton AntiVirus is
  136. already installed, remove automatic protection from CONFIG.SYS or
  137. AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot before running the optimization program.
  138. Once the memory optimization is complete, add the command to load
  139. automatic protection back to the appropriate file and reboot.
  140.  
  141. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION MEMORY USAGE *****
  142. If your computer has a limited amount of memory available for the
  143. automatic protection TSR, use the table below to determine
  144. which options to turn off in order to reduce the amount of memory used.
  145. Be aware that turning off options reduces protection.
  146.  
  147. The automatic protection options are in the Options - Auto-Protect
  148. Settings dialog box and the Options - Inoculation Settings dialog box.

  173.  * When using the 11K version of the auto-protect TSR, if a virus is
  174.    found when checking floppies for virus upon access or when rebooting,
  175.    you will only be notified.  You can subsequently scan the floppy disk
  176.    to find and remove the virus.
  177.  * To install the 15K or 21K versions of the auto-protect TSR, you must
  178.    disable the Repair and Delete buttons in the "How To Respond" sections
  179.    of Auto-Protect and Inoculation.  Repair and Delete must also be
  180.    disabled on the Auto-Protect Virus Sensor Settings dialog.

  182. ***** COMMAND-LINE SWITCHES *****
  183. In addition to the command-line switches documented in the user's manual,
  184. you can also use these:
  185.  
  186. /CLEAR           -- Clears all entries from the activity log.
  187. /EXPORT:filename -- Exports the activity log to a text file.
  188.  
  189. ***** SCANNING IN BATCH MODE / UNATTENDED SCANNING *****
  190. If you want to run Norton AntiVirus unattended so that it doesn't
  191. pause when alert boxes appear, use the following procedure:
  192.  
  193. To customize Norton AntiVirus to run in batch mode:
  194. 1) Select one of the following options from the "When a Virus is Found"
  195.    drop-down list box in the Options - Scanner Settings dialog box:
  196.    "Notify Only," "Repair Automatically," or "Delete Automatically."
  197. 2) Check the "Immediate Notify" check box in the Scanner Advanced
  198.    Settings dialog box.
  199. 3) Check the "Remove Alert Dialog After" check box in the Options -
  200.    Alerts Settings dialog box, then enter 1 in the "Seconds" text
  201.    box.
  202.  
  203. NOTE: For more information on these options, see "Customizing Virus 
  204. Checking" in the User's Guide.  For information on using command-line
  205. switches, see the  "Using Command-Line Switches" appendix in the User's
  206. Guide.
  207.  
  208. ***** VIRSPEC.TXT *****
  209. This text file contains information about viruses that cause unique 
  210. problems and require special handling.  Please refer to this file 
  211. (located in the directory where Norton AntiVirus is installed) for 
  212. information about the One Half virus.
  213.  
  214. ***** SCHEDULING VIRUS SCANS *****
  215. The User's Guide documents the procedure to schedule automatic virus
  216. scans if Norton Desktop for Windows (NDW) is also installed. If NDW
  217. is not installed, the following steps are different:
  218.  
  219. 5) Make sure Run Program is displayed for the Type of Event.
  220. 6) Type a brief description in the Description text box.
  221. 7) In the Command Line to Run text box, type the Norton AntiVirus
  222.    command. See the Command-Line Switches appendix for complete
  223.    information. For example, to scan your hard drive, type:
  224.  
  225.         NAVW C:
  226.  
  227.    To scan more than one item, use spaces to separate them:
  228.  
  229.         NAVW C: D:\APPS
  230.  
  231. 8) Select how often you want the scan to occur in the Frequency
  232.    drop-down list.
  233. 9) Finish scheduling the scan by entering the correct time, day,
  234.    and date information.
  235.  
  236. Continue with step 12 of the printed procedure.
  237.  
  238. ***** RUNNING THE DOS SCANNER IN A STANDARD MODE DOS BOX *****
  239. In Windows 3.1 standard mode, you need to create a PIF file that allocates
  240. XMS memory to run the Norton AntiVirus DOS Scanner in a DOS box. Please 
  241. refer to your Windows 3.1 documentation for instructions.

  247. ***** MICROSOFT WINDOWS *****
  248. If you are prompted to inoculate a file while windows is loading and
  249. your computer subsequently "hangs," type the following command at
  250. the DOS prompt to inoculate the windows files:
  251.  
  252.      C:\NAV\NAV /REFRESH C:\WINDOWS /S
  253.  
  254. If Norton AntiVirus is not installed in C:\NAV or Windows is not
  255. installed in C:\WINDOWS, substitute the appropriate path.
  256.  
  257. After inoculating the windows files you can then load Windows.
  258.  
  259. ***** WINDOWS SCREEN SAVER AND SCHEDULER *****
  260. If your screen saver is not activating with Scheduler loaded,
  261. select "Hide When Iconized" from the Scheduler Options menu.  If
  262. you don't want to hide the Scheduler icon, add the following
  263. statement to the [Scheduler] section in the SCHEDULE.INI
  264. file:
  265.         ICONTIME=0
  266.  
  267. The SCHEDULE.INI file is located in your Windows directory.
  268.  
  269. ***** NEC *****
  270. If your computer hangs when Norton AntiVirus checks the A: drive on a
  271. warm boot, add the following statement to your CONFIG.SYS file:
  272.

  274.  
  275. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND UPDATING SOFTWARE *****
  276. If you have configured Norton AntiVirus to detect unknown viruses using 
  277. the Virus Sensor Technology feature, you may get unknown virus alerts when
  278. installing or updating software.  This does not necessarily mean the file
  279. is infected with an unknown virus.  The installation process may be 
  280. overwriting existing files or expanding compressed files, which may 
  281. trigger an alert.
  282.  
  283. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND COMPRESSED DRIVES *****
  284. If you install Norton AntiVirus on a compressed drive and subsequently get
  285. the error message "NAVOPTS.DAT file not found, default settings loaded,"
  286. install automatic protection as a TSR.  For instructions, see "Using
  287. Automatic Protection as a TSR" in the User's Guide.
  288.  
  289. ***** BYPASS KEYS WITH MEMORY MANAGERS *****
  290. By default, pressing both ALT keys will bypass the loading of the 
  291. Auto-Protect feature of Norton AntiVirus.  The memory managers, QEMM and
  292. 386MAX, also use both ALT keys to bypass their loading.  If you are using
  293. either of these memory managers, you may wish to modify the bypass keys 
  294. used by Norton AntiVirus.  For instructions, see "Monitoring During 
  295. Startup" in the User's Guide.

  297. ***** INSTALLING FROM WITHIN WINDOWS *****
  298. The Norton AntiVirus installation program cannot be used within a Windows
  299. DOS box.  You must exit Windows and install directly from DOS.
  300.  
  301. ***** CONFIG.SYS *****
  302. The FILES statement in your CONFIG.SYS file should be set to a minimum
  303. of 15.
  304.  
  305. ***** NORTON ADMINISTRATOR FOR NETWORKS *****
  306. If you are using the License Metering feature of Norton Administrator for
  307. Networks, turn off the "Use UNC Path Names" option in the License Metering
  308. Configuration screen.  This ensures maximum compatibility with Norton
  309. AntiVirus.
  310.  
  311. ***** INSTALLING FROM AN OS/2 DOS BOX *****
  312. Norton AntiVirus will not install properly from within an OS/2 DOS box.
  313. To properly install in an OS/2 DOS box, run "INSTALL /NOMTC" for
  314. "No Multitasking Check".  This will bypass the Norton AntiVirus attempt
  315. to check for a multitasking environment.
