  1. THE LAST EXPRESS

  4. This walkthrough assumes you are familiar with operating the game's user 
  5. interface. 
  6.  
  7. The Last Express is not a completely linear game, so this walkthrough is 
  8. only one order of events while others will also lead to a successful game 
  9. completion. 
  10.  
  11. The events in this game do not always happen at the same time or in same 
  12. place for each game played. For this reason you may find it difficult to 
  13. follow this walkthrough exactly. You may get behind schedule and miss 
  14. opportunities. Usually you will get another chance to perform critical 
  15. actions. If the game ends prematurely you can always rewind.

  23. 1.Whenever the conductors are not at their stations take a look at their 
  24. books. One of them sketches the passengers. These pictures may provide 
  25. clues. Check this book as often as you can. As the journey progresses, you 
  26. will find more sketches in his book. The other book contains the passenger 
  27. list. 2.The newspaper in the smoking compartment contains interesting 
  28. political information. 3.Whenever the conductors' views are blocked you 
  29. can try to enter other passenger's compartments. 4.When the guard

  41. 24th July 1914, Paris to Chalons 
  42.  
  43. 19:14 Tyler Whitney looks out from the stationary Orient Express. He is 
  44. clearly expecting someone. 
  45.  
  46. 19:39 The Orient Express has left Paris. Robert Cath jumps on to the 
  47. moving train. 
  48.  
  49. At this point you take control of Cath's actions. You are positioned between 
  50. the Private Car and the Rear Sleeping Car. Turn right and go into the Rear 
  51. Sleeping Car.

  55. Find Compartment 1. This is Tyler Whitney's compartment. Open the door 
  56. and go inside. You find Tyler's dead body. You must get rid of the body or 
  57. you will be arrested for Tyler's murder! Open the compartment window. 
  58. Pick up Tyler's body and throw it out of the window. Your jacket is bloody. 
  59. If the conductor sees you like this you will be arrested, so swap it for 
  60. Tyler's jacket hanging near the window. Get Tyler's case down from the 
  61. rack and open it. Read Cath's telegram to Tyler. Take the Russian
  62.  
  63. 19:40 First Service Dinner is announced. 
  64.  
  65. Go to the Restaurant Car. On your way through the Smoking 
  66. Compartment, stop and listen to Sophie and Rebecca chatting. 
  67.  
  68. Go into the Dining Compartment and talk with the older man sitting by 
  69. himself, August Schmidt. Tyler & August clearly had a deal! You have to 
  70. find some gold or this deal will go ahead. After August returns to his 
  71. compartment, stay in the Dining Compartment. Now talk to the younger 
  72. man sitting on his own, Alexei Dolnikov. When Alexei leaves pick up his 
  73. book and take the timetable inside it. Note he has marked the time 10:40 
  74. on the timetable. Alexei returns shortly to retrieve his book. Listen to t
  75.  
  76. Leave the Restaurant Car and walk through the Sleeping Cars, until you 
  77. encounter the child Francois Boutarel blowing a whistle. Follow Francois 
  78. to Compartment D. He will tell his mother how he saw a dead man being 
  79. thrown from the train! 
  80.  
  81. Return to the Dining Compartment. When the elegant woman, Anna, 
  82. enters, talk to her. 
  83.  
  84. Go into the Smoking Compartment and show Alexei the Russian scroll. He 
  85. wasn't very helpful. You will need someone else who is fluent in Russian 
  86.  
  87. Return to the Dining Compartment. Listen to the Boutarel's discussion. 
  88. Listen and watch August flirting with Anna. 
  89.  
  90. Leave and walk through to the Rear Sleeping Car. The conductor tells you 
  91. that you are requested to go to the Private Car. Do so. 
  92.  
  93. 20:30 Second Service Dinner is announced. 
  94.  
  95. In the Private Car, you meet Kronos and Tahina. Kronos alludes to a very 
  96. significant exchange of something highly valuable...and a very heavy 
  97. briefcase. Return to the Dining Car. 
  98.  
  99. The Count and Tatiana are leaving. Follow them. As they go through the 
  100. Smoking Compartment, Alexei confronts the Count. Talk to Alexei. He 
  101. leaves. 
  102.  
  103. Return to the Dining Compartment and listen to Sophie and Rebecca's 
  104. discussion.

  108. Return to your compartment, number 1, and you will be attacked by Milos. 
  109. When you win the fight by disarming him, he will talk to you. 
  110.  
  111. Leave your compartment and walk toward the Restaurant Car. You should 
  112. see Tahina in the Sleeping Cars corridor searching other people's 
  113. compartments for something. 
  114.  
  115. Go to the Dining Compartment and go through the curtain. The chef and 
  116. his apprentice are chatting. Return to the Sleeping Cars Corridor.

  118. 21:16 The train arrives at Epernay 
  119.  
  120. You should see Tahina leaving your compartment, stopping outside Anna's 
  121. then entering someone else's. 
  122.  
  123. 21:19 The French police board the train. You must hide or you will be 
  124. arrested! I found the best place to hide was in the Count's washroom. Go 
  125. into Compartment A, then into the washroom. Stay here until you here the 
  126. police disembark. Go out to the corridor. 
  127.  
  128. At Compartment D, Mme Boutarel, Francois and the conductor discuss the 
  129. police investigation. When Anna appears talk to her. 
  130.  
  131. Tatiana goes to the door area between the Private Car and the Rear 
  132. Sleeping Car.

  134. The guard and conductors chat at the conductors' stations.

  136. Go to the Smoking Compartment and listen to Anna and August chatting.

  142. Return to your compartment and go to sleep.

  148. You seem to have woken up. Get up, leave the compartment then go back 
  149. in. You are having a nightmare about Tyler. You wake up.

  153. Go to Compartment F and talk with Anna. Go to Compartment A. The 
  154. Count is having an attack. Afterwards, listen to Anna confiding in Tatiana. 
  155. She knows her compartment has been searched, She wants Tatiana to take 
  156. care of something for her. Return to Compartment F and talk with Anna.. 
  157. Anna then goes into Tatiana's compartment then returns to her own.

  159. Return to your own compartment and go to sleep.

  163. 25th July 1914, Ulm to Munich

  165. When you wake up you find a scarf. 
  166.  
  167. Leave the compartment. You should see Francois playing with the whistle. 
  168. He will show it to you.

  170. Visit Compartment G. Milos will chat with you. You now know that Tyler 
  171. was to conduct an arms deal with August. He was going to exchange an 
  172. item known as the "Firebird" for gold. Then the gold was to buy the guns 
  173. from August for the Serbian resistance movement. 
  174.  
  175. Back in the corridor or in Compartment D, Francois has a new game. The 
  176. guard and conductor chat about a missing master key.

  180. Francois chats with his mother about a beetle. 
  181.  
  182. Go to the Dining Compartment and talk to Tatiana. She will offer to 
  183. translate the Firebird Scroll for you. She then gets up to talk to Alexei. 
  184.  
  185. Go to the Smoking Compartment, and listen to Sophie and Rebecca 
  186. chatting with August. Sit down at the table under the clock. Take the box 
  187. of matches from your pocket and remove the matches. Catch the beetle in 
  188. the match box. This may take several attempts! 
  189.  
  190. Walk through the Sleeping Cars corridors until you meet August and talk 
  191. with him.

  193. 10:18 The train arrives at Munich.

  195. Watch August's merchandise being put on the train. Note the shape of the 
  196. box.

  204. 12:00 In the Smoking Compartment, Alexei and Tatiana play chess and

  207. Go into the Dining Compartment. You will overhear Abbot talking to the 
  208. guard.

  210. 12:12 First Service Lunch is announced.

  212. Chat with August. Anna joins August for lunch. Return to the Sleeping 
  213. Car corridor. Boutarel and Abbot are chatting in Compartment C. The 
  214. conductors are chatting.

  216. When Francois comes along you can show him the beetle. Return to the 
  217. Smoking Compartment.

  219. Alexei and Tatiana continue to play chess and chat. Go into the Dining 
  220. Compartment

  222. The Boutarel family is chatting. Join Abbot for lunch.

  224. 12:45 The train arrives at Salzburg.

  228. 25th July 1914, Salzburg to Wels

  230. Pay Kronos a visit in his Private Car. Read the book on the couch and 
  231. listen to Tahina and Kronos plotting. They believe Anna has the Firebird.

  233. Return to your compartment. The Firebird Scroll with a translation will be 
  234. on the floor by the door. Return to the Dining Car. 
  235.  
  236. August and Anna continue to chat. Then they move to the Smoking 
  237. Compartment. Follow them. 
  238.  
  239. August and Anna continue to chat. Tatiana and Alexei are still here 
  240. chatting too. 
  241.  
  242. 13:00 Second Service Lunch is announced. 
  243.  
  244. The Boutarel family return to their compartments. Watch Kronos arrange a 
  245. music concert with Anna. When everyone leaves the Smoking 
  246. Compartment, check out the Dining Compartment. You may catch Sophie 
  247. and Rebecca chatting. Return to the Forward Sleeping Car corridor.

  249. 13:57 The train arrives at Attnang

  251. Francois will trade the whistle for your beetle. Then he plays with the 
  252. beetle. August will chat with you.

  254. Mme Boutarel complains to the conductor about Anna's dog. Then the 
  255. conductor and guard discuss Mme Boutarel's demand. The conductor talks 
  256. to Anna and removes her dog. 
  257.  
  258. Return to the Rear Sleeping Car. The conductor will invite you to the 
  259. music concert. 
  260.  
  261. Return to the Dining Compartment. You should hear the chef berating his 
  262. apprentice.

  264. 14:23 The train arrives at Wels.

  266. Return to the Smoking Car.

  270. 25th July 1914, Wels to Linz 
  271.  
  272. Sophie and Rebecca are chatting. Rebecca leaves. Try talking to Sophie. 
  273. Return to the Forward Sleeping Cars corridor.

  275. Anna leaves her compartment, has it locked and heads for Kronos's Private 
  276. Car. Return to the Smoking Compartment. 
  277.  
  278. Rebecca returns to chat with Sophie. Return to the Sleeping Cars corridor. 
  279. Tatiana leaves her compartment.

  281. Go into Compartment A and then into the washroom. Look in the 
  282. cupboard under the sink and take the golden egg. Leave. The Count will 
  283. awaken and speak to you. Leave.

  287. Back in the corridor at Compartment E, you hear Rebecca and Sophie 
  288. chatting.

  290. 14:55 The train arrives at Linz.

  294. 25th July 1914, Linz to Vienna

  298. Return to your compartment and leave the golden egg in the chest.

  300. Around 15:10 go to the Private Car where the music concert is starting. Sit 
  301. down and appreciate the music. Watch Tahina. Tahina leaves the concert 
  302. (to search compartments again). Tahina returns to the concert a few 
  303. minutes later. Now it is safe to do some compartment searching yourself! 
  304. Leave the concert. 
  305.  
  306. You have half an hour to an hour to complete the following very 
  307. interesting activities while several people are occupied by the concert. 
  308.  
  309. Go into Compartment E. Search it and read Rebecca's diary. Exit through 
  310. the window and enter Anna's compartment. Open the trunk. In the bottom 
  311. drawer is an enlightening letter. Look at the jewel case. In the bottom of it 
  312. there is a secret compartment. Open it and take the master key. 
  313.  
  314. The master key will open all the compartment and outer doors. Leave 
  315. Anna's compartment and go to the outside door area between the Rear 
  316. Sleeping Car and Private Car. Use the key to unlock the right-hand side 
  317. door and go outside. Use the ladder to climb up to the roof of the train. 
  318. Turn around and walk to the back of the train along the roof. When you get 
  319. to the glass roof of the Private Car (you should hear the concert), smash it. 
  320. Jump down into Kronos's private bedroom. 
  321.  
  322. Look at the papers on the bedside table. It seems as though Tyler had the 
  323. egg when he left Paris. Find the hidden switch on the wall to the right of 
  324. the wardrobe and press it. This opens up a cabinet and reveals a briefcase. 
  325. Look at the case. It is full of gold. Take it. Leave via the door and go into 
  326. the music concert! This causes a bit of a stir. Leave. 
  327.  
  328. Return to your compartment. Put the case under your bed. Retrieve the 
  329. golden egg. 
  330.  
  331. Go to the Baggage Car and go though to the very end (when the guard is 
  332. elsewhere), so that you can see the engine. Open the dog's cage. Let Max 
  333. out. Deposit the golden egg in the cage. 
  334.  
  335. Return to the Sleeping Car corridor. Abbot tries to talk to Alexei in the 
  336. Smoking Compartment. Alexei leaves. 
  337.  
  338. Alexei's return will enable you to enter Compartment 3 using the master 
  339. key. Search August's compartment. Search his case. You will find a draft 
  340. letter. Return to the concert. 
  341.  
  342. When the concert ends return to your compartment. Collect the case full of 
  343. gold. Go back out to the Sleeping Car corridor. In the Forward Sleeping 
  344. Car, Anna and August are chatting. Return to the Rear Sleeping Car. 
  345.  
  346. Go to Compartment 3. Wait for August to go in. Visit August and show 
  347. him the gold. 
  348.  
  349. Tahina tells you at gun point to see Kronos. Surprise, surprise! Go to the 
  350. Private Car. Kronos will reclaim the case full of gold. Return to the Rear 
  351. Sleeping Car. 
  352.  
  353. Milos will chat with you. Go to Compartment G. Visit Milos and talk to 
  354. him some more. 
  355.  
  356. You may hear Tatiana reporting to Anna, that the egg has been stolen! Go 
  357. to the Smoking Compartment. 
  358.  
  359. Listen to Abbot and August chatting. When Abbot leaves chat with 
  360. August. 
  361.  
  362. Go to the Baggage Car. And go into the now open baggage area. Find the 
  363. box that was loaded on the train by August in Munich. Try to open it. 
  364. Anna will appear and you will hear her story about Tyler and the egg. 
  365. Then Vesna attacks you. Keep avoiding Vesna's attack until Anna takes 
  366. control of the situation. Take a look in the box if you get a chance. 
  367.  
  368. 18:00 The train arrives at Vienna.

  372. 25th July 1914, Vienna to Budapest

  374. 19:35 First Service Dinner is announced.

  376. Visit Compartment F and chat with Anna. Return to the Dining 
  377. Compartment.

  379. August is waiting for Anna. But Anna sends a message canceling the 
  380. appointment. Leave and go to the area between the Rear Sleeping Car and 
  381. the Private Car. 
  382.  
  383. Here you will find Alexei and Tatiana talking. You can only eavesdrop if 
  384. you listen from next to the guard's station so that they don't know you are 
  385. there. You should overhear Alexei planning to blow up the train! Go to 
  386. Compartment 2. 
  387.  
  388. 20:08 The train arrives at Poszony. 
  389.  
  390. Search Alexei's compartment. Get the case from the rack and take the 
  391. detonator you find there. Abbot will walk in on you! 
  392.  
  393. When you return to the corridor Alexei and Tatiana should be parting 
  394. company. Go to the Forward Sleeping Car. Claude and Abbot are chatting 
  395. in Compartment C. 
  396.  
  397. 20:30 Second Service Dinner is announced.

  399. 20:47 The train arrives at Galanta. 
  400.  
  401. Return to your compartment. When you hear the knocking, open the door. 
  402. Tatiana visits you and asks for your help. Go to the Smoking 
  403. Compartment. 
  404.  
  405. Chat with a very drunk August. Return to your compartment. 
  406.  
  407. Go to sleep. You dream. 
  408.  
  409. 22:30 You wake up 
  410.  
  411. Go to Compartment A. In Compartment A, you hear Alexei's last words 
  412. and witness his death. Leave. 
  413.  
  414. You overhear Abbot asking the Guard to keep the incident quiet. You 
  415. should be hearing a fairly loud ticking. Remember how Alexei had noted 
  416. down the time of 10:40 p.m. on his train timetable? 
  417.  
  418. Track down the sound of the clock to the Guard's forward station panel. 
  419. Open the panel and find the bomb. Move the bomb once only. Use a 
  420. cigarette on the exposed wires to burn through the wires. Do not open the 
  421. box! Turn the box around and remove the screws from the hinges. Place 
  422. the telegram between the moving contacts to disarm the bomb. Phew! Not 
  423. a second too soon! Congratulations! Go to the Smoking Compartment. 
  424.  
  425. Chat with Abbot. Follow Anna to her compartment. Although she is tired 
  426. be persistent in talking to her . . . The Serbs take over the train!

  430. 26th July 1914, Budapest to Istanbul
  431.  
  432. 04:40 You wake up. 
  433.  
  434. You are bound and imprisoned in a baggage compartment. Free yourself. 
  435. Fight the Serb. You must hit him a few times to win. Then free Anna. Go 
  436. to the back of the train, go outside and up the ladder onto the roof. 
  437.  
  438. Go toward the engine and fight the Serb. Avoid the attacks, then grab the 
  439. bar he is using to attack you to win. Turn around and fight Vesna. Avoid 
  440. Vesna's attacks then when she ducks, you must duck too. Return to the 
  441. Dining Compartment. 
  442.  
  443. You explain what has happened and most passengers return to their 
  444. compartments. 
  445.  
  446. The Count and Tatiana won't move. Chat with them. Go to the area 
  447. between the Restaurant Car and the Sleeping Car. 
  448.  
  449. Open up the floor here, and de-couple the cars. August is not a happy man! 
  450. Return to the roof of the train. 
  451.  
  452. Go to the engine and chat with Milos, Anna shoots Milos and tries to stop 
  453. the train. 
  454.  
  455. Release the brake and the train will continue on crashing through the 
  456. Serbian barrier. Go to the passenger compartment in the Baggage Car. 
  457. Chat with Anna . . .

  461. 27th July 1914, Budapest to Istanbul

  463. 07:00 You wake up. 
  464.  
  465. When Anna leaves. Go to the Restaurant Car. Chat with Kronos. Fetch the 
  466. Firebird egg from the dog's cage. Open the Firebird by clicking on the 
  467. gems according to the order in the Firebird scroll: 
  468.  
  469. Australia (aqua), Denmark (blue), China (red), Island in the South Pacific 
  470. (purple), the Near East (green). 
  471.  
  472. Anna will make the Firebird sing by playing the violin. 
  473.  
  474. When Kronos tells you to close the Firebird, immediately use the gold 
  475. whistle on the Firebird . . . At last you understand how Tyler died.

  477. Enjoy the closing sequences and history lesson!
