  14.  This document presents the first release of a program
  15. intended to send faxes directly from the USR PalmPilot,
  16. without the need of being connected to a Desktop.

  30. REQUIREMENTS AND FUNCTIONS
  31.  
  32.  The program should work on both new and old pilots as it doesn't use
  33. any of the functionalities of the last releases. (The development started
  34. with a Pilot 5000 and now goes on with a PalmPilot Professional). I've not
  35. tested the access to the MemoPad data on a Pilot 5000 or 1000. (I Hope the
  36. database name was the same)

  38.  To send a fax follow the next steps :
  39.         1 - Choose the source
  40.         2 - If the source is MemoPad, choose the record
  41.         3 - Press the Send button

  45. I - Configuring the page
  46. --------------------------
  47.  
  48.  Tap on Menu then on Page Config in the Config Menu.
  49.  
  50. FAX ID : The identification string of your pilot. It will be sent
  51.   to the remote fax to be stored in the reception journal.
  52.  
  53. SENDER NAME : Your identification which will be displayed in the header of
  54.   the page
  55.  
  56. RESOLUTION : Normal or fine resolution. ONLY THE NORMAL RESOLUTION IS
  57.   CURRENTLY SUPPORTED
  58.  
  59. ADD A HEADER, ADD A FOOTER : Enable you to add or remove the header or the
  60.   footer
  61.  
  62. CHAR SIZE : Size of the characters in the body of the message. (2 or 3 is fine)
  63.  
  64. FONT : Choose one of the three fonts available to use as your default font
  65.    in your faxes.
  66.    You can also format the lines of your fax with different fonts
  67.    (see FORMATTING the fax text)
  68.  
  69. LEFT and RIGHT margin : Those numbers are the values in cm of the margins
  70.    that the fax will leave to the left and to the right of the page.
  71.    Be careful, in this version, no validity test is implemented for those
  72.    settings.

  74. II - Configuring the communication
  75. ------------------------------------
  76.  
  77.  Tap on Menu then on Modem Config in the Config Menu
  78.  
  79. SPEED : The communication speed
  80.         9600  ->  Pilot to Modem at 9600 Bds and Modem to remote fax at 9600 Bds
  81.         19200 ->  Pilot to Modem at 19200 Bds and Modem to remote fax at 14400 Bds
  82.  
  83. LOCALLOOP : If this is checked, the modem will not dial any number. This enables
  84.  you to connect your modem directly to your fax in the same room. It's what
  85.  I use for test purposes, but IT'S PROBABLY NOT VERY GOOD FOR IMPEDENCE LEVELS.
  86.  DO THAT AT YOUR OWN RISKS !!! The hardware is not designed for that use !!!

  88. WAIT FOR XON : If this is checked, the program will wait for an XON from
  89.  the modem before sending the data. Some modem don't require that (if think USR)
  90.  so if it doesn't work with this checked, try unchecking it. Good luck !!!

  92. USE CTS/RTS : If this box is checked, the CTS/RTS signals will be used . With
  93.  some modems this can help. It seems that using CTS/RTS is the only
  94.  way to "talk" to Pilot Modems. IF YOU HAVE A PILOT MODEM, check this 
  95.  boxes.
  96.  
  97. USE XON/XOFF : This box is new in this version. The previous versions
  98.  were always using XON/XOFF. If you uncheck this box, be sure to have
  99.  USE CTS/RTS checked as a flow control method is needed.
  100.  If you get some 'Comm Rec ...' errors when sending the fax, try unchecking
  101.  this box.
  102.  
  103. MODEM TYPE : Try CLASS 2 first. If it doesn't work, try CLASS 2.0
  104.  CLASS 2.0 is still not fully implemented. 
  105.  
  106. INIT STRING : Initialisation string for the modem. This string
  107.  MUST PUT THE MODEM in the XON/XOFF mode for communication between
  108.  Pilot and Modem
  109.  
  110. IDENT STRING : String Sent to Identify the modem when you request it in
  111.  the menu.
  112.  
  113. DIAL PREFIX : The string of characters preceding the the number to dial.
  114.  Typically ATDT for Tones and ATDP for Pulses.
  115.  
  116. TIMEOUT : This is the delay in seconds that the program will wait
  117.  for an answer when attempting to connect to a remote fax.

  120. III - Viewing the Log.
  121. ------------------------
  122.  
  123.  The program records the characters sent and received. Use Menu|Config|View log
  124. to read this trace. The trace is erased each time you use the program.
  125.  
  126.  The "To Clipboard" button will copy the log to the clipboard. You can then
  127. paste it to a memo and retrieve it on your PC.

  129. IV - Sending a fax
  130. --------------------

  132.  FORMATTING the text of your fax
  133.  
  134. In this version , you can change the font used by the program to generate
  135. the text of the fax. You can mix fonts in the same message, not on the same
  136. line.

  138. If a line contains              this line and the next lines will use

  141.    &l                                   the large font (Default)
  142.    &b                                   the bold font
  143.  
  144.  In the fax application, select the source and the record if the source is
  145. MemoPad. Then press the Send button.

  147. V - Notes
  148. -----------
  149.  
  150. * The clipboard has a limited capacity (1024 Bytes I think).
  151. * The fax size is only limited by the size of the memory available
  152.  (64K maxi in one heap) if sending a memopad report. However, I don't know
  153.  for sure what would happen when running out of memory.
  154. * You'll see some erasing problems in the texts displayed in some
  155.  message boxes. This will be soon fixed, but I wanted to get some
  156.  bug reports on the memopad feature very quickly.
  157. * Always have a backup up to date. One of the previous versions
  158.    completely crashed my Pilot. Only a hard reset worked.

  205. VII - Troubleshooting
  206. ---------------------

  208.  Try to follow the configurations below if it doesn't work :

  211.    1) CLASS 2, Wait for XON On, 19200 Bds
  212.    2) CLASS 2, Wait For XON On, 9600 Bds
  213.    3) Idem 1 but Wait for XON off
  214.    4) Idem 2 but Wait for XON off
  215.  
  216.    If none work, try the configs above with CLASS 2.0 set.
  217.    If even the Modem Identification doesn't work, try with CTS/RTS checked
  218.    If you get comm errors when transmitting, try to uncheck USE XON/XOFF.
