  51. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 lets you create on-the-fly
  52. screen fonts and more. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 gives
  53. most Microsoft Windows applications the same font scaling technology as the
  54. HP LaserJet III printer family. Without leaving your application, you get
  55. type that looks as good on-screen as it does when it comes off your printer
  56. without using valuable disk space to store bitmapped screen fonts.

  58. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 gives you:
  59.   * High-quality screen fonts - no more jagged edges on displays.
  60.   * On-the-fly screen fonts and type scaling - instant screen fonts in the
  61.     styles and sizes you want from within your Windows 3.1 applications.
  62.   * Matching screen fonts for HP LaserJet III/IIID/IIIP printer's resident
  63.     scalable typefaces - What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get printing.

  65. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 includes eight scalable screen
  66. typefaces in popular CG Times and Univers, and it opens the door to
  67. installing a variety of other type products from the HP MasterType Library.
  68. You can purchase and install into Windows 3.1 any of HP's MasterType
  69. Library products which includes scalable typeface collections on cartridge
  70. or disk and more than twenty individual scalable typefaces.  Please feel
  71. free to copy the Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 disks subject
  72. to the above restrictions.

  80. Printer:          HP LaserJet III, IIID, IIIP, or IIISi printer
  81. Computer:         IBM PC/AT compatible (286 and above) with high-density
  82.                   floppy drive
  83. Software:         MS-DOS (or PC-DOS) Version 3.1 or later and Microsoft
  84.                   Windows 3.1
  85. Memory:           Minimum of 1 megabyte of extended RAM, 2 megabytes
  86.                   recommended
  87. Free Disk Space:  Minimum of 2 megabytes

  91. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  95. To install Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1:
  96.  
  97. 1.  Make sure Windows 3.1 is installed and running properly.
  98. 2.  Install and select an HP LaserJet III, IIID, IIISi or IIIP printer
  99.     driver through the Windows 3.1 Control Panel.
  100. 3.  Exit Windows 3.1 completely and return to a DOS prompt (do not use the
  101.     DOS icon).
  102. 4.  Insert Disk 1 of Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 Version
  103.     1.2 in your floppy drive.
  104. 5.  From the DOS prompt of your floppy disk drive, type "IFWSETUP" and
  105.     press [ENTER].
  106.        Example: A: [ENTER]
  107.                 IFWSETUP [ENTER]
  108. 6.  Follow the instructions that appear on the screens to complete
  109.     installation.
  110.     Hint:  For selecting the directory for your Typeface Files and
  111.            Intellifont Summary Files:
  112.              * Input the directory where you have previously installed
  113.                scalable typefaces.  The installation program recognizes
  114.                scalable typefaces.
  115.              * Scalable typefaces could have been installed through Type
  116.                Director or AutoFont.  Typefaces installed through Type
  117.                Director, scalable soft fonts installed through AutoFont,
  118.                and screen fonts installed through AutoFont are placed in
  119.                the \td\type directory of the destination drive.
  120.              * If you specify a directory, (i.e. \td\type) where typefaces
  121.                have already been installed, as the directory for placing
  122.                your Intellifont support files, the Hewlett-Packard
  123.                Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 installation program will
  124.                recognize the typefaces and will install them for use as
  125.                scalable screen fonts.
  126.  
  127. An instruction guide called IFWGUIDE.WRI in Microsoft Write format will be
  128. placed in your Windows 3.1 directory for viewing and printing.
  129.  
  130. When running Windows 3.1, look for the Intellifont Icon in the Intellifont
  131. Group to verify installation.  If you have additional fonts to install,
  132. double click on the Intellifont icon and click on the Fonts button to open
  133. the HP Font Installer window.
  134.  
  135. In the Hewlett-Packard Font Installer notice the typefaces listed in the
  136. left hand box.  If the typeface has a small dot in front of it, it has been
  137. installed for scalable screen fonts.  To create printer fonts to match your
  138. scalable screen fonts, see the section "FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD
  139. INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.1 - New Hewlett-Packard Font Installer with
  140. AutoFont Support" for instructions.

  144. PROBLEMS INSTALLING HEWLETT-PACKARD INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.1?

  156. you need to run Windows 3.1 and setup the HP LaserJet III printer driver
  157. before installing Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1.  The
  158. following procedure installs the HP LaserJet III printer driver and updates
  159. the win.ini file with information needed by the driver and by the Hewlett-
  160. Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1 installation program.
  161.  
  162. 1.  Choose Control Panel from the Main Group in Program Manager. The
  163.     Control Panel window appears.
  164. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window. The Printers
  165.     dialog box appears.  If you have already installed an HP LaserJet III
  166.     printer driver, highlight the corresponding line from the Installed
  167.     Printers dialog box and continue at #8.
  168. 3.  Choose the Add Printer button.
  169. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select the appropriate HP
  170.     LaserJet III printer.
  171. 5.  Choose Install.
  172. 6.  Insert the appropriate Windows 3.1 disk when prompted and press [Enter].
  173. 7.  Highlight the printer name in the Installed Printers list.
  174. 8.  Choose Connect.
  175. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box and click on
  176.     OK.
  177. 10. Choose Setup.
  178. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to reflect your
  179.     printer's configuration.
  180. 12. Choose OK.
  181. 13. Choose Set As Default Printer.
  182. 14. Choose Close.
  183. 15. Continue from #3 of the Installation Instructions.

  187. FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.1

  191. * Screen Font Cache - From the Intellifont icon the user is capable of
  192.   setting a screen font cache to speed up font generation to the screen.
  193.   The size of the cache ranges from 64 Kbytes to 256 Kbytes.  Increasing
  194.   the size of the cache will increase the speed of Hewlett-Packard
  195.   Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1, but will decrease the amount of memory
  196.   available to the application.  For documents with small number of fonts,
  197.   the default cache size should be adequate.  For documents with larger
  198.   number of fonts (10+), the cache should be increased to provide better
  199.   display speed.

  201. * Intellifont Integration - Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1
  202.   includes the Intellifont font scaling technology resident in the Hewlett-
  203.   Packard LaserJet III printer family.  Intellifont scales screen fonts to
  204.   all point sizes supported by Windows 3.1.  Screen fonts are created "on-
  205.   the-fly" -- which means enhanced performance and no need to use valuable
  206.   disk space for bitmapped screen fonts.
  207.  
  208. * Scalable Screen Font Files - CG Times and Univers screen fonts are included
  209.   to match the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III, IIID and IIIP printers' internal
  210.   scalable typefaces.
  211.  
  212. * Hewlett-Packard Font Installer - Scalable typefaces and bitmapped fonts
  213.   can now be installed for use in both Windows 3.1 and your Hewlett-Packard
  214.   LaserJet III family printer.  The Hewlett-Packard font installer installs
  215.   typefaces and fonts from the following file types:
  216.  
  217.     .FF -> AGFA Compugraphic FAIS file format.  These files are usually on
  218.            diskette and are shipped with all Hewlett-Packard scalable font
  219.            products.  The .FF file provides support for scalable printer
  220.            fonts and scalable screen fonts.
  221.  
  222.    .TYP -> AGFA Compugraphic library file format.  These files are placed in
  223.            the \TD\TYPE directory when you install a typeface through Type
  224.            Director, when you install a scalable soft font through HP's
  225.            AutoFont, and when you install a scalable cartridge with screen
  226.            fonts through HP's AutoFont.  The .TYP file provides support for
  227.            scalable printer fonts and scalable screen fonts.
  228.  
  229.    .PCM -> Printer Cartridge Metrics file.  This file is created by the
  230.            cartridge vendor.  PCM files are used for scalable and bitmapped
  231.            cartridges that are not supported by the Hewlett-Packard
  232.            LaserJet III printer driver. The PCM file only provides support
  233.            for printer fonts. For scalable cartridges the scalable screen
  234.            fonts must be installed from a .FF file or a .TYP file.
  235.  
  236.    GLUE.TXT -> This file contains information for all products you install
  237.                with AutoFont Support.  Soft fonts and cartridges, bitmapped
  238.                or scalable can be installed from the "glue.txt" file.  When
  239.                prompted by the HP Font Installer for the drive\directory
  240.                from where you want to add fonts, input the drive\directory
  241.                where your "glue.txt" file is located (default directory for
  242.                HP's AutoFont program and for Type Director is C:\AUTOFONT).
  243.                The HP Font Installer reads the "glue.txt" file and displays
  244.                a list of the typefaces that have been installed with
  245.                AutoFont support. When you add typeface(s), the HP Font
  246.                Installer creates a .PFM file for soft fonts and a .PCM file
  247.                for cartridge fonts from the AutoFont .TFM files.  The HP
  248.                Font Installer installs the .PFM and .PCM files into Windows
  249.                3.1 for access by the printer driver. The GLUE.TXT file only
  250.                provides support for printer fonts.  For scalable soft fonts
  251.                and cartridges the scalable screen fonts must be installed
  252.                from a .FF file or a .TYP file.
  253.  
  254.    .sfp -> Bitmapped soft font in portrait orientation.  Intellifont screen
  255.            fonts are only available for bitmapped fonts that were created
  256.            from an AGFA Compugraphic library file (.TYP).  Windows 3.1 will
  257.            attempt to display a rough representation of other bitmapped
  258.            fonts.

  260.    .sfl -> Bitmapped soft font in landscape orientation.  Intellifont
  261.            screen fonts are only available for bitmapped fonts that were
  262.            created from an AGFA Compugraphic library file (.TYP).  Windows
  263.            3.1 will attempt to display a rough representation of other
  264.            bitmapped fonts.

  266. NOTE:  AutoFont Support - AutoFont support incorporated into the Hewlett-
  267.        Packard font installer allows the installation of scalable typeface
  268.        cartridges, scalable soft fonts, bitmapped cartridge fonts and
  269.        bitmapped soft fonts into Windows 3.1 without first acquiring a
  270.        Windows 3.1 metric file.  AutoFont support works by creating the
  271.        Windows 3.1 metrics files from the .TFM files installed through
  272.        AutoFont.

  283. arise concerning Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.1.  The
  284. Information Guide includes application notes for many Windows 3.1
