WinFax PRO 8.0 Symantec Corporation
README Notes March 01, 1997
==============================================================
The following information reflects changes made since the
WinFax PRO User's Guide was printed. We recommend you
review this document before you install and use
WinFax PRO 8.0.
In some cases, the instructions in this document are specific
to Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. For Windows NT 3.51
solutions, see your Windows documentation, as many of these
procedures may differ slightly.
==============================================================
INSTALLATION AND UPGRADE NOTES
==============================================================
Upgrading from WinFax PRO 7.x:
------------------------------
The WinFax PRO 8.0 Setup program installs TalkWorks greetings
in a different folder location than was used in WinFax PRO 7.x.
If you are upgrading WinFax and TalkWorks from version 7.x,
you can delete the \B and \V subfolders in the WINFAX\DATA
7.x folder after upgrading.
Installing WinFax on a Novell NetWare Client Under
Windows NT 3.51:
--------------------------------------------------
If you install WinFax on a computer running both
Windows NT 3.51 and an older version of the Novell NetWare
client (versions earlier than 3.005), your system may lock up.
To fix this problem:
1. Uninstall WinFax.
2. Disable the WinFax Service.
3. Upgrade your NetWare client software to version 4.0 or
greater (available on Novell's Web site).
4. Reinstall WinFax.
Upgrading from FAXability (NET SatisFAXtion):
---------------------------------------------
If you are upgrading from FAXability, you cannot import your
FAXability logs or log records into WinFax.
Uninstalling WinFax PRO 8.0:
----------------------------
If you run the Uninstall program, Windows will restart twice.
The Uninstall restarts Windows before it uninstalls WinFax
to ensure that no other programs are running (for example,
the WinFax Controller or anti-virus devices). After the
Uninstall program removes the WinFax entries from the Windows
registry, it restarts again in order for the changes to take
affect.
Uninstalling WinFax PRO 8.0 (Windows NT 3.51):
----------------------------------------------
When uninstalling WinFax PRO on Windows NT 3.51, the Uninstall
program may hang while trying to reboot for the second time.
This has been identified as an issue with NT 3.51 when no Service
Packs are installed. Install the latest service pack for
Windows NT 3.51 before uninstalling WinFax PRO.
==============================================================
MODEM ISSUES
==============================================================
See also the TalkWorks Issues section in this document.
Upgrading Your Modem:
---------------------
If you are changing or upgrading your modem, you must
reinstall your modem using WinFax.
Before you upgrade a modem, first remove it from WinFax:
1. On the Setup menu, click Modem.
2. In the Modems Currently Set Up list, click the modem you want
to upgrade.
3. Click Remove.
To install a new modem:
1. On the Setup menu, click Modem.
2. Click Add. The Windows Modem installation wizard starts.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click Next
to proceed.
U.S. Robotics 28.8 Winmodem:
----------------------------
The U.S. Robotics 28.8 Winmodem does not dial credit card
dial sequences correctly in WinFax. You can fix this problem
by installing the U.S. Robotics 33.6 Winmodem upgrade. You can
download the upgrade file (WM336UPG.EXE) from the U.S. Robotics
Web site at: http://www.usr.com.
Cellular Modems:
----------------
Motorola cellular modems cannot receive faxes in TAPI
mode using Motorola cellular phones. To receive faxes,
set up WinFax to communicate directly with the modem on the
COM port.
Note: Sending faxes works properly in both TAPI and
COM port modes.
To change the COM port setting:
1. On the Setup menu, click Modem.
2. In the Modems Currently Set Up list, click your cellular
modem and then click Properties.
3. Click the General tab.
4. In the first drop-down list in the Communications Port
section, click the COM port to which your modem is
attached.
==============================================================
HARDWARE ISSUES
==============================================================
When using the ATI Graphics Ultra (mach8) display adapter under
Windows 95, the colors in WinFax cover pages may appear inverted.
This is a technical limitation, however, your faxes will display
correctly when faxed.
To determine if color inversion is caused by your display
adapter, open the Display control panel settings, and change
your display type to Standard Display Adapter (VGA). This may
resolve the inversion problem.
==============================================================
WINFAX ISSUES
==============================================================
Moving Your Data:
-----------------
You should not move your DATA subfolder because WinFax will
not be able to locate the files required for faxing. If
you need to move your DATA subfolder (for example, you are
running low on disk space), use the DELMOVE utility.
To run the DELMOVE utility:
1. Click the Windows Start button and then click Run.
2. Click Browse.
3. Locate and select the DELMOVE.EXE file in your WinFax
installation folder and then click Open.
4. Click OK.
CardScan CE 2.0 Phonebooks:
---------------------------
Although CardScan CE 2.0 (bundled with PaperPort Deluxe)
registers its phonebook with WinFax, version 2.0 of CardScan
does not support phonebook linking with WinFax. When you try
to access the CardScan phonebook in WinFax, CardScan starts
and an "Unconfigured" error message appears.
In the CardScan software, click Upgrade on the Help menu to
display more information about how you can use CardScan
phonebooks with WinFax.
Searching an ACT! 3.0 Database
------------------------------
If you converted an ACT! 2.0 database to version 3.0, you
may have trouble searching for recipients by last name in
WinFax. To search ACT! databases correctly in WinFax,
first create a new database in ACT! 3.0 and then import your
ACT! 2.0 contacts into the new database. Use the new 3.0
database with WinFax.
Searching Contact Manager and PIM Databases:
--------------------------------------------
To increase the performance of searching with ACT 3.0,
Commence, or Ecco, use the native search option when
searching from WinFax. When the Search dialog appears,
click the Search Options tab and then click Use Native
Phonebook Search.
Backing Up Your WinFax Data Using a Backup Program:
---------------------------------------------------
If the Controller is running when you run your backup program,
the default WinFax message store files (STATUS*.WF?) are not
backed up because the files are being used by the Controller.
To ensure that all your log files are backed up, close the
Controller before you run your backup program. To close the
Controller, right click the Controller icon, then click Exit.
Fax Animation in the Status Dialog:
-----------------------------------
WinFax displays an animated fax machine or answering machine
in the Status dialog when you send and receive faxes or voice
messages. If you do not have the Windows Media Player installed
on your computer, you will not see the animations, and a message
appears explaining that you are missing the AVI DLLs. This does
not affect sending or receiving faxes; it affects only the
status animation.
To display the animations, you need the following Windows
files in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder:
AVIFILE.DLL
AVIFIL32.DLL
These files are included on the Windows installation CD in the
following locations:
Windows 95 installation image:
- Located in the cabinet files (.CAB files).
- To extract these files, use a cabinet extractor utility
(available on many shareware Web sites) and extract them
to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subfolder.
Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 installation image:
- Located in the main installation folder.
- To extract these files, use the Expand utility (provided
with Windows NT) and extract them as follows:
1. Extract AVIFILE.DLL to both your
WINDOWS\SYSTEM and WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 subfolders.
2. Extract AVIFIL32.DLL to your
WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 subfolder.
For help on using the Expand utility, type
type EXPAND/? at a command prompt.
==============================================================
TALKWORKS ISSUES
==============================================================
Using a Dial Prefix and Windows (TAPI) Dialing Method:
------------------------------------------------------
If you are using the Windows (TAPI) dialing method, and you
want to use a prefix when you dial using the TalkWorks
Telephone, you must dial the number manually (that is,
typing the prefix and the number instead of selecting a
number in a phonebook and having WinFax automatically
add the prefix).
Note: TAPI is not the default dialing method. The default
is WinFax dialing, which does not cause this problem.
Using Credit Cards Dial Sequences and Speed Dial Buttons:
---------------------------------------------------------
Speed dialing and credit card dial sequences may not work
properly if you click the TalkWorks handset and THEN press a
speed dial button.
The following commands are not supported when you
dial as described above:
- Wait for dial tone
- Wait for bong
- Switch to pulse dial
Speed dial buttons work properly if you simply click
the speed dial button and do not lift the handset on the
TalkWorks Telephone.
Displaying Message Length in Logs Window:
-----------------------------------------
To display the length of messages (in seconds) in the Logs
window, you must customize the column display. To display
the length of messages in the display area of the Logs
window, you must modify the information displayed.
To display the message length in the log records area of the
Logs window, right click any column heading and enable the
appropriate options.
To display the message length in the display area of the Logs
window, right click any blank lines in the display area and
click Remove Rule/Blank on the menu. Continue removing
blank lines until the Msg Length field appears.
Using TalkWorks Under Windows NT 3.51:
--------------------------------------
The Call Discrimination option (a TAPI feature) is disabled
because Windows NT 3.51 does not support TAPI.
Problems Receiving at High Initialization Speeds:
-------------------------------------------------
If you configured your modem to use a high initialization
speed (for example, 115,200 bps), an error message appears
when you try to receive messages or answer the phone. To
fix this problem, lower the initialization speed setting.
To change the initialization speed:
1. On the Setup menu, click Modem.
2. In the Modems Currently Set Up list, click the
appropriate modem, and then click Properties.
4. Click the General tab.
5. In the Initialize At drop-down list, click a lower speed.
--------------------------------------
CREATIVE LABS PHONEBLASTER 33.6 MODEMS
--------------------------------------
Recording Greetings and Using Speaker Phone:
--------------------------------------------
By default, TalkWorks uses the Windows sound system to play
voice messages, to record greetings and memos, and to set the
microphone for speaker phone operation. If you have trouble
recording greetings and memos or using the speaker phone feature,
ensure your Windows sound system is set up correctly for
recording and playback:
To set recording and playback options (Windows 95 and
Windows NT 4.0):
1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then
click Control Panel.
2. Double click the Multimedia icon.
3. Enable Show Volume Control On The Taskbar and click OK.
4. On the Windows taskbar, right click the Volume icon.
5. Click Volume Controls.
6. On the Options menu, click Properties.
7. In the Adjust Volume For section, click Playback.
8. In the volume control list, enable PC Speaker and
Microphone.
9. In the Adjust Volume For section, click Recording.
10. In the volume control list, enable Microphone.
---------------------------------------------------
U.S. ROBOTICS SPORTSTER 33.6 VOICE VIDEO FAX MODEMS
---------------------------------------------------
Volume Issues:
--------------
Using this modem with TalkWorks, the playback volume is
significantly lower than normal. To increase the volume,
adjust the TalkWorks playback volume slider to the maximum
setting.
To change the playback volume:
1. On the TalkWorks menu, click Setup.
2. Click the Devices tab.
3. In the Playback/Record section, adjust the Playback volume
slider to the maximum setting.
----------------------------------------
U.S. ROBOTICS SPORTSTER 33.6 VOICE MODEM
----------------------------------------
Some U.S. Robotics Sportster Voice 33.6k modems cannot
detect silence while recording voice messages. These
modems cannot determine whether the user has stopped speaking
for a period of time or whether the user has hung up. As a
result, TalkWorks continues to record the message until it
reaches the maximum message length.
To determine if your modem has this problem, check the Eprom
and DSP firmware dates for your modem by issuing an ATI7
command in HyperTerminal.
You should NOT experience this problem if your modem has
firmware dates of 5/1/96 rev 2.0 or 3/20/96 rev 2.0.
You MAY experience this problem if your modem has firmware
dates of 5/13/96 rev 2.0 or 2/5/96 rev 2.0.
To resolve this issue, contact U.S. Robotics for an update.
----------------------
SUPRASONIC 336V+ MODEM
----------------------
Using this modem with TalkWorks, the volume is significantly
lower than normal when using a headset. In addition, this
modem does not work properly in COM port mode.

WINDOWS NT ISSUES
==============================================================
This section describes the known problems with running WinFax
under Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. For more information, see also
the "Installation Notes" and "Email Notes" sections.
WinFax Service Fails to Load:
-----------------------------
Changing passwords on an NT system disables the NT service,
and displays a warning message explaining that "The WinFax
Service Failed To Load".
To resolve this problem:
1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, then
click Control Panel.
2. Double click Services.
3. In the list, click the WinFax PRO Service.
4. Click the Startup button.
5. Change the password for the account to match your current
Windows NT password.
Using WinFax and Microsoft RAS Under Windows NT 4.0:
----------------------------------------------------
Situation: If you upgraded from Windows NT 3.51 to 4.0,
and you use RAS, RAS may not work properly if you
install WinFax under Windows NT 4.0.
Cause: RAS runs under Windows NT 3.51 in COM port mode and,
when you upgrade to Windows 4.0, RAS continues to run in
COM port mode instead of in TAPI mode. Because many WinFax
features (including Automatic Receive and Call
Discrimination) rely on TAPI mode, the following may
occur.
- You start RAS, then start WinFax. WinFax cannot
switch to Automatic Receive mode.
- You start WinFax, then try to start RAS. RAS will
not start.
Solution:
To correct this problem, switch RAS to TAPI mode:
1. In Windows NT 4.0, click the Windows Start button, point
to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double click Network.
3. Click the Services tab.
4. In the list, click Remote Access Service and then click
Properties.
5. In the list of modems, click the appropriate modem and
then click Remove.
6. Click Add.
7. Click Install Modem. The modem installation wizard starts.
8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click Next to
continue.
Note: After the modem is reinstalled, it should run in
TAPI mode.
Quicken:
--------
Quicken does not support Windows NT, so you cannot print faxes
to WinFax from Quicken.
Word 97:
--------
When you print tables to WinFax from Word 97 (the NT 4.0
version), the tables may appear skewed on the fax image.
To fix this problem, adjust the printer settings in Word 97.
To change the printer setting:
1. On Tools menu in Word 97, click Options.
2. Click the Compatibility Tab.
3. Enable Use Printer Metric To Lay Out Document.
Exiting Windows NT 3.51:
------------------------
If you exit Windows NT 3.51 without exiting the Controller,
a message appears informing you that programs are still running.
To exit Windows, click Yes. To avoid this
dialog in the future, close any programs you are running and
exit the Controller before exiting Windows.
IntelliMouse:
-------------
WinFax supports the IntelliMouse. For example, using
IntelliMouse, you can scroll in the Logs window and in the
AudioEditor window.
==============================================================
CC:MAIL ISSUES
==============================================================
cc:Mail Service Not Supported Under Windows NT:
-----------------------------------------------
cc:Mail is not supported under Windows NT. If you want to use
email with WinFax, try using Microsoft Exchange or another
network email program.
Addressing Problems with cc:Mail 6.0:
-------------------------------------
If the recipient address is not being read properly when
sending email with cc:Mail 6.0, you may need to update the
VIM.DLL file for cc:Mail. Ask your email administrator to
update the file with a patch available from Lotus Corporation.
==============================================================
SCANNER ISSUES
==============================================================
HP DeskScan:
------------
To create the best possible fax images with HP scanners
using DeskScan 2.x, set up the scanner using the following
settings:
- In the Type field, select Black And White Drawing.
- In the Path field, select either Fax(Fine) or Fax(Standard).
Note: We recommend you use DeskScan version 2.3 or later.
Logitech PageScan:
------------------
In order to use Logitech's PageScan Control Center (versions
1.3 and 1.4), you may need to set WinFax to use a 32-bit Twain
driver.
To set WinFax to use 32-bit Twain:
1. Exit both WinFax and the Controller.
2. In Windows Explorer, locate the \WINDOWS folder.
3. Create a subfolder called TWAIN_32 (if you do not have
one already).
4. Restart WinFax.
5. On the Setup menu, point to Scanner and then click Select
Twain.
6. Select 32-bit Twain and click OK.
If you are using version 1.3, you may also require the
TWUNK.EXE update patch from Logitech. However, running this
patch may adversely affect other scanning devices attached
to your system. Please contact your hardware manufacturer
for more information.
Windows NT:
-------------------
WinFax supports only 32-bit Twain drivers under Windows NT.
Please note that scanner support under Windows NT is limited,
as many scanner manufacturers do not support their hardware
under Windows NT. Users should consult with their hardware
manufacturer for NT support information.
Delrina WinFax Scanner:
-----------------------
The WinFax Scanner is not supported under Windows NT.
When attempting to install the WinFax Scanner software under
Windows 95, the message "Setup has detected that you do not
have the required version of WinFax PRO installed on your
system" may appear.
In order to use the WinFax Scanner software with
WinFax PRO 8.0, you must be running the Feb 5, 1997
version or later of the WinFax Scanner software.
To check the date of your existing WinFax Scanner software,
click About WinFax Scanner on the Help menu, or if the
software is not installed, check the date of the
SETUP.EXE file on the installation disks. Later releases
of the WinFax Scanner software may be obtained from
the Symantec Web site.
Visioneer PaperPort:
--------------------
Visioneer's PaperPort software is not a Twain software
source on its own. PaperPort is an image management
package that works in conjunction with existing Twain
software. This package does create a link to WinFax by
creating an icon within the PaperPort desktop. Although
this icon's functionality seems to work well, users
should contact Visioneer with any issues related to it.
For the latest listing of tested and approved scanners,
please check the Symantec Web site or Automated Fax
Retrieval System.
