  27. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  28. ----------------------

  30. To use Eudora for Windows Version 4.3, you must have the 
  31. following:
  32.  
  33. -  IBM PC or compatible.
  34. -  Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 or above.
  35. -  WinSock 1.1 API compliant networking package. (Windows 95, 98,
  36.    and NT 4.0 come with this.)
  37. -  An Internet e-mail account (POP or IMAP) with an Internet
  38.    Service Provider or through a corporate network.
  39. -  Access to your mail account via (1) a modem connection to your
  40.    Internet Service Provider or (2) a direct Internet network
  41.    connection.

  45. INSTALLATION
  46. --------------
  47.  
  48. To install Eudora:
  49.  
  50. 1.  After downloading the installer, exit any applications you are
  51.     running.
  52.  
  53. 2.  Click "Start|Run", then click the "Browse" button.
  54.  
  55. 3.  Go to the folder where you saved the installer. Choose that file
  56.     and click "OK".
  57.  
  58. 4.  Read the Welcome screen, then click the Next button.
  59.  
  60. 5.  Read the Software License Agreement, and if you agree to the
  61.     terms, click Yes. Once you've installed Eudora, a copy of the
  62.     license agreement will be available in the file License.txt in
  63.     your Eudora directory.
  64.  
  65. 6.  Pick the components you wish to install.
  66.  
  67. 7.  Specify a directory in which to install Eudora, then click Next.
  68.  
  69. 8.  Eudora is installed in the destination directory.
  70.  
  71. 9.  The installer will offer to place a shortcut to Eudora on your
  72.     desktop.
  73.  
  74. 10. The installer will offer to display the Readme file (this file).
  75.  
  76. 11. The installer will offer to take you to the accessory download
  77.     page in your web browser. This gives you an opportunity to
  78.     download additional tools that can help you use Eudora more
  79.     effectively, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Apple
  80.     QuickTime. The interaction between Eudora and those two
  81.     applications is described below.

  83. 12. We recommend that you look at the Readme.txt and Relnotes.txt
  84.     files in the Eudora directory following installation.

  88. NEW FEATURES IN EUDORA 4.3
  89. ----------------------------
  90.  
  91. Eudora 4.3 introduces a third kind of Eudora, one that's supported by
  92. advertisements. In the past, we had Eudora Pro (all the features, but
  93. you pay) and Eudora Light (free, but fewer features). Now, we have one
  94. application that runs in three modes:
  95.  
  96. 1. Paid mode:      Like Eudora Pro - all the features, but you pay
  97. 2. Light mode:     Like Eudora Light - free, but fewer features
  98. 3. Sponsored mode: New - all the features, free, but with ads
  99.  
  100. Other new features include:
  101. - More powerful mailbox sorting capabilities
  102. - Importing of messages and addresses from Microsoft Outlook Express 5
  103. - Enhanced SMTP authentication support
  104.  
  105. For more information on the new features in Eudora 4.3, please read
  106. the Whatsnew.pdf file in the Eudora directory. You'll need an
  107. application capable of displaying files in PDF (Adobe's Portable
  108. Document Format), such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can obtain
  109. Acrobat Reader from <www.adobe.com>, or from
  110. <www.eudora.com/download/other>.

  114. NOTES CONCERNING EUDORA AND:
  115.       * APPLE QUICKTIME
  116.       * MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
  117. -------------------------------------
  118.  
  119. Eudora's standard message viewer supports basic HTML, such as text
  120. formatting and inline images. Installing QuickTime adds support to the
  121. standard viewer for inline display of a wider range of image (picture)
  122. formats. Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), version 4.0 or
  123. above, adds an additional message viewer (hereinafter, the Microsoft
  124. viewer) to Eudora that can accurately display just about any HTML
  125. message you might receive.
  126.  
  127. You can find installers for these applications on the Eudora web site
  128. at <http://eudora.qualcomm.com/download/other>.
  129.  
  130. * Why should I care about displaying HTML messages?
  131.  
  132. HTML messages (email messages that use HTML, the language of web
  133. pages) are becoming more and more common. The latest web browsers
  134. allow a web page to be sent as an HTML message. If someone sends you
  135. an HTML message that uses advanced formatting such as tables, then to
  136. see it as it was intended you need to tell Eudora to use the Microsoft
  137. viewer instead of its standard message viewer.
  138.  
  139. * If Eudora has two viewers, how will I tell it which one to use?
  140.  
  141. Just check or uncheck the "Use Microsoft's viewer" checkbox in the
  142. Viewing Mail panel of the Options dialog, under the Tools menu in
  143. Eudora. The checkbox is checked by default if IE 4.0 or higher is on
  144. your system. If IE 3.0 or higher is not on your system, the checkbox
  145. is dimmed and you can use only the standard viewer; you can, however,
  146. enhance it with QuickTime as described below.
  147.  
  148. * What's the impact of installing QuickTime?
  149.  
  150. It'll take about a minute and use 6 megabytes of disk space. It
  151. enhances the standard (non-Microsoft) viewer by allowing it to
  152. display images in a wider range of formats. It has no effect when
  153. "Use Microsoft's viewer" is selected.
  154.  
  155. * What's the impact of installing IE 4.0 or higher?
  156.  
  157. If you install IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer, it'll take up to 10
  158. minutes, depending on the speed of your computer, and consume about 35
  159. megabytes of disk space. It will not convert your desktop to the
  160. "active" state where single-clicking on an icon opens it, and it will
  161. not make IE 4.0 your default web browser unless your current default
  162. browser is an earlier version of IE. 
  163.  
  164. The specific viewing capabilities that you gain in Eudora are listed
  165. below.
  166.  
  167. * What if I already have Internet Explorer?
  168.  
  169. If you already have IE 4.0 or above on your system, Eudora will take
  170. advantage of it automatically, so there's no need to have the Eudora
  171. installer reinstall it.
  172.  
  173. If you already have IE 3.0 on your system, you have two choices:
  174.  
  175. 1. You can leave it alone, in which case Eudora will use IE 3.0 if you
  176.    choose "Use Microsoft's viewer" in Eudora's Options dialog.
  177.    However, this doesn't provide all the functionality you get with
  178.    the IE 4.0 viewer (or even the standard viewer) - see the details
  179.    below.
  180. 2. You can upgrade to IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer. This will
  181.    upgrade your IE 3.0 to version 4.0 (on Windows 95, this won't take
  182.    effect until after you reboot). You won't lose any functionality,
  183.    and all your IE settings and preferences will be preserved.
  184.  
  185. If you have aáversion of IE earlier than 3.0 on your system,
  186. installing IE 4.0 will not affect it. However, you must have IE 3.0 or
  187. above in order for the "Use Microsoft's viewer" option to take effect.
  188.  
  189. * What does Eudora's standard viewer support?
  190.  
  191.   + Bold, italic, and underlined text
  192.   + Different font faces, sizes, and colors
  193.   + Fixed-width text
  194.   + Left and right justification and centering
  195.   + Multiple indentation levels
  196.   + Bulleted lists
  197.   + Hyperlinks (clicking on a URL launches your browser and takes you
  198.     to a web page) 
  199.   + Horizontal ruling lines
  200.   + Inline display of BMP images and some JPEG images
  201.  
  202. * What does QuickTime add to the standard viewer?
  203.  
  204.   + Inline display of a wider variety of images, including the full
  205.     set of JPEG formats, PNG, GIF, TIFF, Macintosh PICT, etc.
  206.  
  207. * What does the Microsoft viewer do that the standard one doesn't?
  208.  
  209.   + Displays GIF, PNG and a wider variety of JPEG images inline
  210.   + Automatic inline display of images from web sites
  211.   + Numbered lists
  212.   + Tables and forms
  213.   + International character sets
  214.   + Java applets, JavaScript, and ActiveX controls
  215.   + Dynamic HTML (not if you're using IE 3.0)
  216.   + Other embedded objects (audio, video)
  217.   + Unlike QuickTime, it doesn't display Macintosh PICT images

  219. * What DON'T I get in Eudora if I use IE 3.0 instead of IE 4.0?
  220.  
  221.   + Dynamic HTML
  222.   + Editing of received messages
  223.   + Running Eudora plug-ins (such as text translators) on received
  224.     messages
  225.  
  226. If you're using IE 3.0, you can still edit received messages, and run 
  227. Eudora plug-ins on them, provided you first switch to the standard
  228. viewer by unchecking "Use Microsoft's viewer" in the Options dialog.
  229.  
  230. * What does inline image support mean?
  231.  
  232. This means that if there's a picture embedded in the middle of a
  233. message, it'll display that way. Otherwise, the picture will be an
  234. attachment and will display in a separate window when you click on it.
  235.

  238. REGULAR EXPRESSIONS
  239. ---------------------
  240.  
  241. Note: This section applies only to Sponsored and Paid modes.
  242.  
  243. When searching for messages or defining a filter, you can use
  244. regular expressions. For those who have studied computer science,
  245. regular expressions are probably a familiar concept, but for the
  246. benefit of everyone else there's a brief introduction below.
  247.  
  248. There are two places in Eudora where you can use regular expressions:
  249.  
  250. 1. In the Filters window, in the dropdown menus where you pick the
  251.    relationship between a mail header and a piece of text (e.g.,
  252.    the Subject contains Eudora, Any Recipient is joe@xyz.com, etc.).
  253.    There are two regular expression criteria in that list, namely
  254.    "matches RegEx" and "matches RegEx (case insensitive)".
  255.  
  256. 2. In the Find Messages window, in the middle dropdown menu; there's
  257.    an item that says "matches regexp". This one doesn't say so, but
  258.    it's case insensitive.
  259.  
  260. There are various standard implementations of regular expressions,
  261. but Eudora uses the POSIX implementation. Without going into too much
  262. detail, here are some symbols which are supported.
  263.  
  264.        .  (period) represents any one character.
  265.        [] (brackets) contain a set of characters from which a match 
  266.           can be made.  It corresponds to one character in the search 
  267.           string.
  268.        \  (backslash) is an escape character which means that the 
  269.           next character will not have a special meaning.
  270.  
  271.        *  (asterisk) is a multiplier.  It will match zero or more of 
  272.           the previous character.  (Note that it's not a wildcard
  273.           character as in file names.)
  274.        ?  (question mark) is a multiplier.  It will match zero or one 
  275.           of the previous character.  (Note that it's not a wildcard
  276.           character as in file names.)
  277.        +  (plus) is a multiplier.  It will match one or more of the 
  278.           previous character.
  279.        {} (squiggly brackets) contain a number which specifies an 
  280.           exact number of the previous character.
  281.  
  282.        [^] (brackets containing caret and other characters) means any 
  283.            characters except the character(s) after the caret symbol 
  284.            in the brackets.
  285.  
  286.        ^  (caret) is the start of the line.
  287.        $  (dollar) is the end of the line.
  288.        \< represents the start of a word.
  289.        \> represents the end of a word.
  290.  
  291.        [:alpha:] represents any alphabetic letter.
  292.        [:digit:] represents any single-digit number.
  293.        [:blank:] represents a space or tab.
  294.  
  295.        |  (pipe) is OR.  It requires that the joined expressions have
  296.           parentheses around them.
  297.  
  298. Here are a few examples:
  299.        E.*a    matches Eudora, Etcetera, Ea
  300.        ho+p    matches hop, hoop, hoooop, but not hp
  301.        etc\.   matches etc. but not etc
  302.        e.a     matches eta, eda, e1a; it only matches Eta if the
  303.                matching is case-insensitive
  304.        [eE].a  matches eta and Eta
  305.

  312. SECURITY NOTE

  315. Recent email viruses, such as the notorious "Melissa", have heightened
  316. many people's awareness of the need to be careful with email. For
  317. maximum protection, we recommend the following:
  318. 1. Change your Eudora attachment directory to something other than the
  319.    default.
  320. 2. Disable JavaScript in your web browser.
  321. 3. Leave "(Warn me when I) Launch a program from a message" checked
  322.    in Tools/Options/Extra Warnings.
  323. 4. Leave "Allow executables in HTML content" unchecked in
  324.    Tools/Options/Viewing Mail.
  325.

  337. Describe what you did, what happened, what version of Eudora you 
  338. have, any error messages Eudora gave (the numbers in parentheses ( ) 
  339. are especially important), what kind of computer you have, which 
  340. operating system you're using, and anything else you think might be 
  341. relevant. An easy way of incorporating your system information is
  342. to select Help/Insert System Configuration while composing your
  343. message in Eudora.

  395. QUALCOMM INCORPORATED ("QUALCOMM") IS WILLING TO LICENSE
  396. VERSION 4.3 OF ITS EUDORA« SOFTWARE AND THE ACCOMPANYING
  397. DOCUMENTATION (THE "SOFTWARE") TO YOU ONLY ON THE CONDITION
  398. THAT YOU ACCEPT ALL OF THE TERMS IN THIS AGREEMENT. PLEASE
  399. READ THE TERMS CAREFULLY. BY CLICKING ON THE "YES" BUTTON
  400. BELOW YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT,
  401. UNDERSTAND IT AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS AND

  406. 1. LICENSE.  Qualcomm hereby grants you a nonexclusive 
  407. license to install and use the Software in machine-

  410. purposes, provided that you reproduce all copyright and 
  411. other proprietary notices that are on the original copy 
  412. of the Software.

  414. 2. RESTRICTIONS. Qualcomm retains all right, title, and 
  415. interest in and to the Software, and any rights not 
  416. granted to you herein are reserved by Qualcomm. You may 
  417. not reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, or

  432. 3. PRIVACY STATEMENT.  The Eudora Privacy Statement found 
  433. online at <http://www.eudora.com/privacy>, is 
  434. incorporated herein by reference.

  436. 4. SUPPORT.  Registered users of the Software are entitled 
  437. to Qualcomm's standard support services, as such services 
  438. are modified from time to time in Qualcomm's discretion.
  439.   
  440. 5. NO WARRANTY. THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND 
  441. WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OR CONDITION, WHETHER EXPRESS, 
  442. IMPLIED OR STATUTORY.  Some jurisdictions do not allow 
  443. the disclaimer of implied warranties, so the foregoing 
  444. disclaimer may not apply to you.  This warranty gives you 
  445. specific legal rights and you may also have other legal 
  446. rights which vary from state to state.

  448. 6. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY.  IN NO EVENT WILL QUALCOMM OR
  449. ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR FOR ANY LOST PROFITS OR OTHER 
  450. CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES (HOWEVER 
  451. ARISING, INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE) IN CONNECTION WITH THE 
  452. SOFTWARE OR THIS AGREEMENT, EVEN IF QUALCOMM HAS BEEN 
  453. ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.  In no event 
  454. will Qualcomm's liability in connection with the 
  455. Software, regardless of the form of action, exceed $100.  
  456. Some jurisdictions do not allow the foregoing limitations 
  457. of liability, so the foregoing limitations may not apply 
  458. to you.
  459.  
  460. 7. TERM AND TERMINATION.  This Agreement shall continue
  461. until terminated. You may terminate the Agreement at any
  462. time by deleting all copies of the Software.  This license 
  463. terminates automatically if you violate any terms of the 
  464. Agreement.  Upon termination you must promptly delete all 
  465. copies of the Software.  Sections 2, 5, 6, 10 and 11 
  466. shall survive termination.
  467.  
  468. 8. EXPORT.  You may not download or otherwise export or 
  469. re-export the Software except in full compliance with all 
  470. applicable laws and regulations. By accepting this 
  471. agreement you represent and warrant that you: (a) 
  472. understand that the Software is subject to export 
  473. controls under the EAR, (b) are not located in a 
  474. prohibited destination country under the EAR or U.S. 
  475. sanctions regulations (currently Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, 
  476. North Korea, Sudan, Syria, the Federal Republic of 
  477. Yugoslavia (including Serbia but not Kosovo or 
  478. Montenegro), and Taliban controlled areas of 
  479. Afghanistan), (c) are not a Denied Party, Specially 
  480. Designated National, or other person or entity prohibited 
  481. from receiving exports / re-exports  by U.S. law; and (d) 
  482. will not export, re-export, or transfer the Software to 
  483. any prohibited destination entity or individual without 
  484. the necessary export license(s) or authorization(s) from 
  485. the U.S. Government.
  486.  
  487. 9. CONTRACTING PARTIES.  If the Software is installed on 
  488. computers owned by a corporation or other legal entity, 
  489. then this Agreement is formed by and between Qualcomm and 
  490. such entity. The individual executing this Agreement 
  491. represents and warrants to Qualcomm that they have the 
  492. authority to bind such entity to the terms and conditions 
  493. of this Agreement.
  494.  
  495. 10. INDEMNITY. You agree to defend and indemnify QUALCOMM 
  496. Incorporated against all claims, losses, liabilities, 
  497. damages, costs and expenses, including attorney's fees, 
  498. which QUALCOMM may incur in connection with your breach 
  499. of this Agreement.
  500.  
  501. 11. GENERAL.  The Software is a "commercial item."  This 
  502. Agreement is governed and interpreted in accordance with 
  503. the laws of the State of California without giving effect 
  504. to its conflict of laws provisions.  The United Nations 
  505. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of 
  506. Goods is expressly disclaimed.  Any claim arising out of 
  507. or related to this Agreement must be brought exclusively 
  508. in a federal or state court located in San Diego County, 
  509. California and you consent to the jurisdiction of such 
  510. courts. If any provision of this Agreement shall be 
  511. invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions of this 
  512. Agreement shall not be affected.  This Agreement is the 
  513. entire and exclusive agreement between Qualcomm and you 
  514. with respect to the Software and supersedes all prior 
  515. agreements (whether written or oral) and other 
  516. communications between Qualcomm and you with respect to 
  517. the Software.
