  1. The most common problems you are likely to encounter are:
  2.  
  3. 1.  If you get any hangs, lock-ups or crashes, the most likely culprit
  4.     is SMARTDRV. Rem this out in your autoexec.bat and config.sys then
  5.     reboot your system.
  6.  
  7.     If problems persist, then:
  8.  
  9. a.) Remove all other TSR's.
  10. b.) Some systems do not work well with HIMEM and EMM386 - rem these out
  11.     in your config.sys, as well.
  12. c.) Reboot your computer with the shift key held down to bypass your
  13.     normal startup files. (F5 for MS DOS 6.0+)
  14. d.) If nothing else works, run setup again and say "no sound".
  15.  
  16. 2. If autodetection of your sound card fails and you've checked the 
  17.    settings in the setup.exe program and it STILL doesn't work try
  18.    the following:
  19.  
  20. Look at your autoexec.bat file and check your SET BLASTER settings (assuming
  21. you are using a Sound Blaster compatible card).  Use the Port address,
  22. DMA, and IRQ values and setup your sound card manually by running the 
  23. setup program. 
  24. If you are not using a Sound Blaster, consult the manual that came with
  25. your sound card and double check the settings there before trying
  26. the setup program again.
  27.  
  28. 3. To increase speed (and for slower systems), try setting the sound quality 
  29. lower and reduce the number of channels to 4 or below (unless you've got your
  30. sound pumping through an expensive stereo system or high quality head
  31. phones, maximum quality differs little from low quality). Reducing the screen
  32. size also speeds the game up considerably.  Turn off mouse and joystick
  33. support if you aren't using them.
  34.  
  35. 4. It may be necessary to increase the sound cache value up to 4 if you
  36. are using a Gravis Ultrasound soundcard.  The card has internal memory
  37. and decreasing the sound cache too far may slow playback substantially
  38. on this device.  The Gravis Ultrasound must have a minimum of 512k of
  39. onboard memory to work with Greed.
  40.  
  41. 5. When this version was released, modem play was not fully supported.
  42. You will experience problems if your modem is using the older UART 8250
  43. (we're workin on it.)
  44.
