During the night of March 18, 1781, Messier confirmed Mechain's discoveries and added nine new nebulae on his own account. On April 13, 1781, Messier finished the supplement to his catalogue and included 24 objects originally found by Mechain. The complete catalogue was published in 1781 and in the Conneissance d'Etat for 1783. In November 1781, Messier's work was interrupted by a serious accident.
