Transcription: His first entry, the Crab Nebula, M1, was made on September 12, 1758. Two weeks earlier he had discovered a comet. The crab was entered into his observing log in the same way as for his comets. The second Messier object, a globular cluster in Aquarius, is shown on the map which he used when searching for Halley's Comet. In 1764 he began a careful search for nebulous objects, and within seven months had logged an additional thirty-eight.
