The French astronomer Charles Messier had no formal training in science, yet he has a place in the history of astronomy, both as a discoverer of comets and as the author of the famous catalogue of star clusters and nebulae. He was born at Baden-Vieres, but at the age of 21, following the death of his parents, he moved to Paris and became assistant to the astronomer Delisle. This was in 1751.
