Transcription: The astronomer makes entries in his logbook. The assistant takes exposures of the comparison spectrum of iron, measures the star's light by means of a photometer and stabilizes the position of the star on the aperture of the spectrograph. This may well have to be rechecked periodically. The state of the sky is then checked so that the length of the time exposure can be worked out. This work seems monotonous. It may last for minutes or even hours for the first exposure. When the shutter finally closes, the assistant leaves to develop the plate and the astronomer sets another object in the field ...
