It moved in an eccentric orbit around the Earth and between 1989 and 1993 produced the most precise and comprehensive star catalogue ever compiled. It lists the positions, movements, distances and luminosities of about one million stars with a higher degree of accuracy than had ever been previously attained. The catalogue was published in 1996.
