The New Parents' Question & Answer Book
6 Months to 1 Year: Introduction
The second half of the first year constitutes a very special period in
the life span. Your baby will begin crawling, and she will start to
understand some of the language that she hears. She may even take her first
steps and say her first words. Her concepts of time and space will expand,
and her capacity to interact with you will increase. As your baby acquires
increasingly complex abilities and encounters more complicated objects and
situations, she will have the opportunity to learn many critical lessons. How
well she does will depend largely upon how skillfully you handle the job of
shaping her environment and supplying her with appropriate experiences. Your
baby will be venturing into a much wider world at this point. She will need
you to provide enthusiastic support as well as responsible guidance. You may
find the challenges involved to be somewhat imposing on occasion. Rest
assured, however, that with adequate awareness of what to expect and
sufficient energy to follow through on a few simple strategies, most of these
challenges can be mastered easily. The consequences of coping with them
successfully will be enormously pleasurable and rewarding for both you and
your baby.
