  19. Before you install a McAfee product that you've downloaded from an
  20. online service, you'll want to verify that the files you
  21. downloaded are exactly the same as when we posted them online.
  22. We recommend you perform this task for maximum anti-virus
  23. protection. Read the following paragraphs to learn how to
  24. validate your file.

  27. Included in the files you downloaded is the Validate program
  28. (version 2.0.1). Validate is a file-authentication program that
  29. you can use to check program files for signs of tampering.
  30. Validate uses two methods of generating Cyclic Redundancy Checks
  31. (CRC's), and then displays the information so you can compare
  32. these statistics against the "known value" for the program files.
  33. The dual CRC checking provides a high degree of security.
  34. The known value you use for validation is usually provided by the
  35. author of the program, or you may receive it from a trusted
  36. information database.  You can find the statistics for this
  37. McAfee product in the file PACKING.LST.

  39. To confirm that a program file has not been tampered with, run the
  40. Validate program and then record the validation data produced.
  41. Compare this data against the file statistics the program author has
  42. specified. If the information matches, most likely the program
  43. has not been modified since the files where placed online.

  45. To run VALIDATE, enter the following command:

  47.      VALIDATE <path spec>
  48.  
  49. where <pathspec> is the name of a directory and file. (The
  50. wildcard characters, "*" and "?", can be used when specifying
  51. <pathspec>.)

  53. The VALIDATE program displays the following information:
  54.  
  55.      <name of directory>
  56.      name of file (starting at row 1)
  57.      extension of file (starting at row 10)
  58.      size of file (starting at row 15)
  59.      date of file (starting at row 25)
  60.      time of file (starting at row 35)
  61.      check method 1 (starting at row 44)
  62.      check method 2 (starting at row 51)
