- (_/echMedia Publishing, Inc., publishers of AmigaWorld, has just announced
- the appointment of Dennis Brisson as editor-in-chief. In his new role,
- Brisson will oversee the editorial direction and quality, manage the budget
- and supervise the editorial staff of the monthly publication.
-
- Brisson will continue his duties as editor-in-chief of RUN, a position he has
- held since the magazine's inception in 1983. The appointment, which goes into
- effect immediately, recognizes Brisson's performance and contribution to the
- company over the years, according to TechMedia president Dale Strang.
-
- Dennis has excellent management skills, as well as a broad knowledge of the
- Commodore market, which were evident in his tenure at RUN and will be carried
- over to his role at AmigaWorld. He helped to establish RUN as the sole
- remaining magazine dedicated to the Commodore eight-bit market. His increased
- responsibilities will greatly benefit the TechMedia unit," Strang said.
-
- Brisson, who brings over 14 years of editorial management experience to the
- position, replaces former editor-in-chief Doug Barney, who has accepted a
- position with the InfoWorld bureau based in Massachusetts.
-
- AmigaWorld, the leading magazine for Amiga computer users, is a publication

- Commodore Tangles with Knight-Ridder Columnist
- ____ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- / ___) A Letter From Commodore
- ( (__
- \__ \
- ___) )everal Knight-Ridder newspapers across the country published Phillip
- (____/ Robinson's column this month in which he declared that the Amiga is
- dead. The following is Commodore's response:
-
-
- Commodore is aware of the activity on computer networks in response to the
- "Amiga/Slow Death" article written by Mr. Phillip Robinson. Commodore wants
- to assure all you who are concerned that we are not taking this lightly, and
- would appreciate your help in responding to Mr. Robinson and to newspapers
- who have reprinted the article. Therefore, we are providing the information
- that follows. It is a version of a correspondence sent to dealers in market
- areas where the article has appeared.
-
- All of us at Commodore share your concern about this story. The Commodore
- marketing and communications staff agree that this story is one-sided,
- contains several inaccuracies, and does not communicate the current thrust of
- our emerging, dynamic and leading U.S. business presence in multimedia and
- related applications.
-
- Specific Actions And An Update
-
- We've had two conversations with Mr. Robinson since his article first
- appeared. We communicated to him all of the reasons why suggesting that
- "Amiga is dying a slow death" couldn't be further from the truth! We have
- one additional interview scheduled with Mr. Robinson next Wednesday (July
- 29th). He will be writing a follow-up article after the interview. The
- follow-up article will appear first in the San Jose Mercury News and then
- will be distributed through the Knight Ridder distribution channels to your
- local paper. That process usually takes up to two weeks.
-
- Mr. Robinson reports that the feedback he's currently receiving from the
- "Amiga/Slow Death" article is the heaviest he's experienced in the eight
- years of doing this column. He reports that some of the more virulent
- negative feedback has included threats of violence. We of course do not
- endorse violent feedback of any kind. But you can take constructive steps to
- channel your negative reaction to Mr. Robinson's article.
-
- You can help manage the negative public perception Mr. Robinson's article has
- created by taking action with your local broadcast and print media. Please
- consider doing the the following:
-
- 1) Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper that ran the
- Robinson article. Correct the record. Use some of the message
- points we've provided. Voice your strong objection to the
- one-sided and ridiculous suggestion that Amiga and Commodore
- have no future.
-
- 2) Send a copy of your letter to the editor directly to Phillip
- Robinson. His address is P.O. Box 1357, Sausolito, CA 94966
- (as printed in the San Jose Mercury News).
-
- 3) If you wish, voice your opinion to Mr. Robinson by leaving a
- voice-mail message for him at (415) 289-9498. Do this in the
- next seven days so you have impact on his follow-up article.
-
- Here are the primary message points that Commodore hopes to get across to Mr.
- Robinson. Perhaps you can include some of them in your letters to the
- editor:
-
- * Commodore is a one billion dollar company.
-
- * There are more that three million Amigas installed worldwide.
-
- * Phillip Robinson's recent article, which talks about a "slow
- death" for the Amiga, was written with no input from Commodore.
-
- * Commodore is not "killing" the Amiga. In fact, the company,
- and its developer network, currently are working on several
- enhancements to the Amiga product line. Significant product
- announcements are planned this Fall at the World of Commodore
- show in Pasadena.
-
- * Approximately 1000 dealers distribute the Amiga in the United
- States.
-
- * Commodore recently signed a sole national distribution agreement
- with Merisel, Inc., the world's largest publicly held
- distributor of microcomputer hardware and software products.
-
- * Commodore recently signed a strategic product reseller agreement
- with Digital Equipment Corporation.
-
- * Commodore, its shareholders, its dealers, its developers, and
- its end-user base continue to have a long-term commitment to
- the Amiga and its future as a multimedia, business and consumer
- microcomputer.
-
- * Commodore (and the Amiga) is a pioneer in the emerging
- multimedia market. The company and its independent developers
- actually are helping define multimedia. Many companies say
- they are "in" multimedia without really knowing what that means.
- Commodore has a strong end-user base executing a wide variety
- of multimedia applications today.
-
- * Multimedia is not a single market or application. Multimedia
- is a method of designing and integrating computer technologies
- on a single platform that enables the end-user to input, create,
- manipulate, and output text, graphics, audio and video with a
- single user interface.
-
- * Commodore is focusing on four key business markets, for
- professional applications, in the United Sates: videography,
- professional training, kiosk information systems, and
- presentation systems. The company has significant market
- share in each of these business markets.
-
- * The company recently launched an aggressive marketing and
- advertising campaign to support and increase its leadership
- position in these four key business markets. In addition,
- Commodore is updating industry trade editors and reporters
- about the company's U.S. business strategy against these four
- key professional markets.
-
- * Commodore has added new senior management to the consumer side
- of the business. The company plans to extend current strengths
- of the Amiga into consumer channels with a variety of product
- announcements and new consumer applications during the next
- 12 months.
-
- * NewTek is a valued developer. The Video Toaster is a great
- Amiga peripheral. But the Amiga is much, much more than just
- a power supply for NewTek's Video Toaster. In fact, to say
- that the Amiga is "just a power supply for the toaster" is a
- totally wrong and misguided depiction of the Amiga. And,
- NewTek's Video Toaster is dependent on the Amiga's custom
- chip technology.
-
- * The Amiga offers the best "price/performance" for multimedia
- computing solutions available today. In addition, the Amiga
- provides "traditional" office computing applications and a
- wide variety of entertainment packages. The Amiga also
- provides options to read and write MS-DOS and MacIntosh files.
-
- * This is the most exciting time in the history of Commodore
- and Amiga computing. The company's visibility in the
- microcomputer industry should increase significantly during
- the next year as new programs, products, strategies and
- applications mature.
-
- Final Thoughts
-
- We are taking specific steps not only regarding this incident but also to
- ensure that we regain more leverage and positive coverage in the general
- media and reporting environment going forward. To that end, we're planning
- some specific press events at both World of Commodore and Fall Comdex. We've
- also begun an intensive telephone contact campaign to strengthen our ongoing
- relationships with hundreds of editors, reporters, and freelancers who write
- about Commodore and the Amiga. We are committed to increasing the flow of
- accurate information to these important and influential media audiences.
-
- In the meantime, please help us with the impressions precipitated by the
- Robinson article; follow through on the recommendations we've made in this
- correspondence.
-
- Please consider faxing Mandi Griffies, in our corporate communications
- department, copies of any correspondence you generate on behalf of this
- effort and report subsequent media feedback and results directly to her. Her
- fax number is (215) 431-9465. Thank you for your concern and partnership.
-
- P.S. "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

- Quantum Unveils New Low-Cost Drives
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- _ _ Family of no-compromise 3 1/2-inch drives
- / \/ \ targets growing price-sensitive systems market
- / \
- / /\ /\ \
- (_/ \/ \_)ilpitas, Calif, July 27, 1992 -- Quantum Corporation (PTC:QNTM)
- today announced a family of one-inch-high, 3 1/2 inch form factor drives that
- delivers the highest reliability and best value in its class. The move marks
- Quantum's strategy to serve a major segment of the personal computer market:
- entry-level, low-cost desktop systems.
-
- Quantum's new ProDrive ELS(tm) drives for IBM-compatible and Macintosh
- [*StarShip* News Note: and Amiga] systems feature the broad capacity range
- (42, 85, 127, and 170 megabytes), very high reliability (projected field MTBF
- of 250,000 hours), and high performance (seek times as fast as 17
- milliseconds) required by today's newly affordable 386/486-class PCS. With
- these features, the IDE-AT and SCSI drives offer the best value in their
- class with pricing at or below $340 for the 170 MB evaluation units. As such,
- they represent the first no-compromise drive solutions for one of the largest
- segments of the personal computer industry.
-
- "Low-cost systems have emerged as one of today's most important PC market
- segments with many suppliers contending for a share of the market," said
- Michael A. Brown, Quantum executive vice president. "Now, even the largest
- OEM companies are focusing on this segment, and Quantum is there with the
- drives they need."
-
- According to Brown, Quantum designed the ProDrive ELS drives in direct
- response to the demands of this market. "We worked closely with several major
- manufacturers and our leading distribution customers to determine exactly
- what capacities and features these drives should offer," said Brown. "As a
- result, the drives combine the high quality Quantum is well-known for with
- price points appropriate for price-sensitive systems. This, in turn, will be
- a significant plus for Quantum in the high-volume, low-cost systems
- marketplace."
-
- There is significant market opportunity for ProDrive ELS-class products
- according to industry analysts. Market researcher, Dataquest, predicts that
- shipments of low-cost ($1,000-$3,000) 386/486-class systems will make up
- nearly 80 percent of the 1993 systems market, with those desktop machines
- offering 80-200 MB of disk drive capacity seeing the strongest demand.
-
-
- No-Compromise Reliability and Performance for Today's Affordable Systems
-
- Quantum specifically designed the ProDrive ELs family to deliver the combined
- benefits of high reliability, high performance, and low cost. The new drives
- feature a lower-parts count than competing products, contributing to a
- 250,000-hour projected field MTBF -- the highest of any drives in their
- class. Other factors contributing to reliability, performance, and
- affordability include:
-
- * a high level of component integration to achieve a single-sided printed-
- circuit board, with only 11 ICs;
-
- * an integrated motor and base casting to eliminate parts and simplify
- manufacturing
-
- * and leveraging of successful designs and mature, proven processes and
- technologies found in other Quantum products.
-
- As with Quantum's earlier ProDrive products, the ProDrive ELS drives provide
- both DisCache(R) and WriteCache(TM) firmware to deliver significant
- improvements in data throughput during both read and write operations. In
- addition, Read/Write Multiple firmware is available in the IDE-AT drive and
- allows the transfer of data to and from the drive in block sizes larger than
- one sector, also improving data throughput rates.
-
- The ProDrive ELS drives' low power consumption (less than 2.5 watts during
- idle mode) allows system manufacturers to use smaller power supplies,
- permitting further cost reductions for entry level systems. In addition, the
- drive's low acoustic noise (less than 36 dBA during idle mode) provide for a
- quieter system. The ProDrive ELS drives are offered with an embedded IDE-AT
- or SCSI controller.
-
- Availability and pricing
-
- Evaluation units of the new ProDrive ELS drives are available now for OEM
- customers and early this Fall for distribution customers. OEM evaluation unit
- pricing for IDE-AT drives is $170, $230, $280, and $320 for the ProDrive EL
- 42, 85, 127, and 170 MB versions, respectively. (OEM evaluation unit pricing
- for SCSI drives is $180, $240, $300, and $340.) The drives offer a one-year
- standard warranty with a two-year extended option for OEMS purchasing
- directly from Quantum. For distributor and reseller customers, Quantum offers
- a two-year standard warranty on these products.
-
- About Quantum
-
- Quantum Corporation is a leading independent manufacturer of mass storage
- systems for a broad range of computer systems including desktop work-
- stations, personal computers, and advanced notebook computers. The company
- markets its drives directly to OEMs through a broad range of distributors to
- value-added resellers and smaller OEMs, and through dealers and retail
- outlets in more than 40 countries worldwide. Quantum also markets its
- products direct to end users through its direct marketing subsidiary, LaCie
- Ltd.
-
- Quantum ranked among the Fortune 500 for the first time in 1991 and reported
- sales for its 1992 fiscal year, ended March 31, 1992, of more than $1.1
- billion.

- (__ __) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- / /
- / /
- (_/he AirMouse Remote Control developed and manufactured by Selectech, Ltd.,
- of Colchester, Vermont, is the simplest solution to the complexity of today's
- interactive presentation equipment. This revolutionary device operates like a
- computer mouse, yet has no wires and requires no hard surface. The presenter
- (involved in business, educational, or training purposes) can control his
- equipment from up to 10 meters (32 feet) away from a tiny base station that
- sits near the projection system. The AirMouse is compatible with IBM and
- IBM-clones running DOS and Windows, Apple Macintosh, Commodore Amiga,
- Commodore CDTV, Philips CD-I, and most recently, OS/2.
-
- The Typical Problem for Today's Presenters:

- Letter to AD1012 owners...
-
-
- SunRize Industries
- 2959 S, Winchester Blvd., Suite 204
- Campbell, CA 95008
- Telephone 408/374-4962
-
- 15 July 1992
-
- Dear AD1012 Owner:
-
- I am writing to give you first shot at upgrading to our revolutionary new
- 16-bit audio card. We've spent a long time working on this next generation
- board, and it was worth it! Not only is it STEREO and 16-bits ("CD quality"),
- it's 8 TRACKS! You can't get that anywhere else, on any computer platform, at
- any price. Plus, the AD516 comes with version 2.0 of Studio 16. This
- feature-packed upgrade adds many enhancements to the editor, cue list, open
- list, and other modules. For example, unique "drag & drop" technology lets
- you drag names from the open list and drop them into the cue list. But before
- I get into the details, I want to mention that demand for the AD516 is far
- outstripping our first production run. If you want one of these first boards,
- be sure and get your order in today.
-
- AD516
-
- To increase the number of tracks on the AD516, we had to add extra hardware.
- This special circuitry quadruples the data transfer efficiency over the
- AD1012. With the AD516, a stock 68000-based Amiga 2000 can now play four
- simultaneous tracks at 44.1KHz. An accelerated Amiga can play 8 tracks. Plus,
- we bumped the card's RAM from 64K to 256K. This extra RAM allows more tracks
- and will be used in future software upgrades for special effects.
-
- The AD516 sounds great! Its 16 bits improve the dynamic range to 85 decibels
- and the frequency response to 22KHz. The AD516 uses the latest "delta sigma"
- technology in the playback and record circuitry which also features 64 times
- oversampling. Compare that to most CD players that are only 4 or 8 times
- oversampling. The AD516 offers 14 standard sampling rates from 5.5KHz to
- 48KHz. Each rate is crystal controlled for accuracy. Also, on chip digital
- input gain adjustment is provided for easy level setting.
-
- As well as two "audio in" jacks and two "audio out" jacks, the AD516 includes
- an LTC SMPTE time code reader similar to the AD1012's. Used with the cue
- list, you can synchronize stereo sound to video tape.
-
- Studio 16 version 2.0
-
- Shipping with the AD516 is Studio 16 version 2.0. This new software has
- features added to most modules, support for stereo, and usability
- improvements. Most modules now use menus along with keyboard shortcuts. New
- "drag and drop" technology allows you to drag entries from the open list, and
- drop them in the transport or the cue list.
-
- The new open list allows up to eight different working directories. These can
- all be on one or multiple hard disks. So now you can play sounds from
- different hard disks at the same time. For example, this is useful when a
- single hard drive is too slow or small. Or when you have common samples on an
- internal drive and project-specific sounds on a removable Syquest drive.
-
- The editor includes many improvements, just some of which are listed here.
- You can now play the display, loop, change the sampling rate of a sample
- ("resample"), zero a range, insert silence at any point, invert a range, or
- echo a range. A new grid provides a visual reference on the display. And a
- new FFT function will graph the frequency components of sound.
-
- You can now define multiple ranges inside a sample and give these "regions" a
- name. Regions can be triggered in the cue list, allowing you to trigger part
- of a sample without making a copy.
-
- Many enhancements to the cue list have also been made. Samples can now be
- easily entered by dragging them from the open list. The start time code will
- automatically set if time code is running while recording. A new stop button
- makes it easy to stop playback. When entering time codes, you can leave out
- the colons and leading zeros. You can now merge two cue lists, or enter a
- global time code offset. You can quickly create new entries with the current
- time code by pressing a key.
-
- In addition to the cue list changes, Studio 16 version 2.0 allows you to
- specify time code points to start and stop recording. Also included is a
- complete ARexx port for interfacing with third-party software.
