  18. What is Montana?
  19.  
  20. Montana is a simple but rather addictive patience-like card game for the
  21. (most excellent!) Amiga computer. NOTE! This version of Montana REQUIRES
  22. version 2.0 (or later) of AmigaOS! If you're still running 1.2/1.3, you'd
  23. better go and get 2.0 NOW, because it's REALLY worth it!

  25. Background information

  27. I played this game for the 1st time on the Macintoshes at my school and I
  28. liked it! :) So, I thought it would be nice to have this game on my Amiga,
  29. but for a long time I didn't do anything about it until one Saturday
  30. morning (about 3 weeks ago)... I started playing around with GadToolsBox
  31. drawing buttons here, defining menus there and suddenly I realised that I
  32. had the 'perfect' user interface for Montana right in front of me! I started
  33. coding and - hey presto! - by noon the next day the program was ready! And
  34. since it has worked without any problems ever since, I thought I'd release
  35. it for your delight as well! ;)

  37. Running Montana

  39. Montana CAN'T be started from the Workbench the usual way, ie. from it's own
  40. icon! However, you CAN start it (from WB) by selecting 'Execute Command...'
  41. from the Workbench menu and typing the path and name of the program you want.
  42. You can also start Montana by 1st selecting 'Show/All Files' from the Window
  43. menu and double-clicking on the default tool icon named EMon (or FMon). And,
  44. of course, you can start Montana from the Shell. "We apologise for the
  45. inconvenience", but hey, this is only v0.1... ;)

  47. Playing Montana

  49. The basic idea of Montana is to arrange the cards in numerical order (from 2
  50. to K and from left to right) with each suit on it's own row.
  51.  
  52. Playing Montana is simple! :) You'll notice 4 holes (instead of aces) on the
  53. 'table'. Choose one hole at random :) and look at the card on the left side
  54. of the hole. Now find the card which is of the same suit and the next in
  55. numerical order and click it with the mouse. Hey presto! The card you clicked
  56. is moved (if it was the correct one...) to the hole! In this way you can
  57. arrange the cards until...

  59. There are 2 special cards: 1) a 2 can only be placed in a hole at the left
  60. edge of the table and 2) you can't place anything after a K (of course).
  61.  
  62. Sooner or later you'll get stuck because of the K's. Then you can re-shuffle
  63. the cards (by selecting the 'Shuffle 1' or 'Shuffle 2' actions) and try
  64. again. NOTE! The cards which are already in the correct place and order will
  65. NOT be shuffled! You can re-shuffle the cards twice and _WHEN_ you get stuck
  66. after that, you can only select the 'Result'-action to see your score. Or
  67. you could start a 'New game' or 'Quit'... :)

  71. The gadgets and menu-actions ought to be pretty self-evident, so all I can
  72. really say is that HAVE FUN WITH MONTANA! :) It's a very simple game, but
  73. look what happened to Tetris! O:) And DON'T think Montana is a piece of cake
  74. to finish, because it's not! I've played this game for months (on Macs & now
  75. on Amiga) and I've finished it only 5 times (if my memory serves right)!
