  60. 1. System Requirements/Overview
  61. ============================================
  62. The minimum requirements for Microsoft Scenes are a 386SX
  63. running Windows 3.1 and a VGA display, 3 megabytes (MB)
  64. of available disk space and 2 MB of available random-access
  65. memory (RAM).
  66.  
  67. Scenes has been optimized for an SVGA display at 640x480
  68. resolution. For the best-looking pictures, make sure your display
  69. adapter, or card, and driver support 256 colors or more. Scenes
  70. will also display on 16-color VGA displays; however, the colors
  71. will be noticeably limited and will not match the original colors
  72. of the pictures.
  73.  
  74. For pictures to fill the screen, set your display resolution to
  75. 640x480. At higher resolutions, Scenes will display wallpaper
  76. pictures framed by the desktop color and pattern that you have
  77. chosen in the Windows Control Panel.
  78.  
  79. Scenes packs its software and 48 full-color photographic images
  80. on just two disks by compressing the images. Depending on computer
  81. speed, picture changes can take up to five minutes as Scenes
  82. decompresses the new picture. On most computers, pictures can
  83. be changed every two minutes. Adjust the setting for picture
  84. changes in the Screen Saver Settings dialog box to suit your
  85. computer speed.

  88. =============================================
  89. 2. Troubleshooting Tips
  90. =============================================
  91. This section provides supplements the Troubleshooting section
  92. of Microsoft Scenes online Help.
  93.  
  94. If not enough memory is available to run Scenes
  95. -----------------------------------------------
  96. For proper operation, Scenes requires 2 MB of available
  97. memory. You may be able to free up some memory by closing
  98. other applications. If you are running MS-DOS, version 6,
  99. with DoubleSpace and you get a message saying not enough
  100. memory is available to run the Scenes screen saver, the
  101. About Program Manager dialog box may still indicate that
  102. you have more than 2 MB of memory available. Choose the
  103. About command from the Scenes Control menu to see the
  104. available memory that Scenes can actually use.
  105.  
  106. Running out of memory on a regular basis may be a result of
  107. how your system is set up. For more information on potential
  108. solutions, see "If not enough memory is available" in the
  109. Troubleshooting section of the Microsoft Scenes online Help.
  110.  
  111. If you have problems printing when Scenes is running
  112. ----------------------------------------------------
  113. If printing appears to stop, the printer you are using may be
  114. shared on a network in which the server is running Scenes.
  115. To correct this in Windows version 3.1, open Print Manager,
  116. and, from the Options menu, choose High Priority. In Windows
  117. for Workgroups, open Print Manager, choose Background
  118. Printing from the Options menu, and then select High for
  119. the Printing Priority.
  120.  
  121. If the Scenes screen saver starts after you've exited Scenes
  122. ------------------------------------------------------------
  123. The Scenes screen saver will run after you've exited the Scenes
  124. application if:
  125. * You selected the Scenes screen saver in the Windows Control
  126.   Panel.
  127. * You crashed when Scenes was running and have not yet started
  128.   Scenes again.
  129. To run effectively, the Scenes screen saver should always
  130. be started from the Scenes application, not from the Windows
  131. Control Panel. To correct this situation, restart Scenes.
  132. When you exit Scenes again, the Scenes screen saver will be
  133. removed from the Windows Control Panel.
  134.  
  135. If transition effects take a long time
  136. --------------------------------------
  137. Make sure you are using the correct display driver for your
  138. display adapter or card. Even with the correct driver, 
  139. some displays may take longer than others to complete certain
  140. transition effects. Experiment with different effects until you
  141. find one that performs to your satisfaction, or use the "Cut"
  142. transition effect.
  143.  
  144. If the screen saver doesn't cancel immediately
  145. ----------------------------------------------
  146. Running other applications while using Microsoft Scenes can
  147. occasionally slow the process of displaying pictures or the
  148. time Scenes takes to start and stop the screen saver.
  149. Applications that are processor-intensive, such as compilers,
  150. or communications-intensive, such as CompuServe, are
  151. particularly likely to affect the performance of Scenes.
  152.  
  153. If your miniatures aren't getting updated
  154. -----------------------------------------
  155. If the Microsoft Scenes dialog box does not display the
  156. correct miniature for Current Wallpaper, you are probably
  157. running an application that is set for "Always on Top,"
  158. such as the Windows clock. To update the miniatures,
  159. just click the Microsoft Scenes dialog box.
  160.  
  161. If the screen-saver pictures do not appear to change
  162. ----------------------------------------------------
  163. You may have selected a custom picture set that contains just
  164. one picture as your screen saver. If this is the case, Microsoft
  165. Scenes "changes" from the current picture to the same picture.
  166. In this situation, you will not be able to see the transition
  167. effects because the image remains unchanged. To avoid this, select
  168. a picture set with more than one picture, such as a Microsoft
  169. Scenes collection, or select [All Picture Sets].
  170.  
  171.  
  172. If you get the message "MS Scenes requires CTL3D.DLL version
  173. 2.001 or later to work properly"
  174. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  175. If you get this message when you try to start Microsoft Scenes,
  176. installation of another application may have overwritten
  177. CTL3D.DLL. To run properly, Scenes needs a more recent version of
  178. CTL3D.DLL. To correct this problem, try reinstalling Scenes. If
  179. you've installed multiple Scenes collections, you only need to
  180. reinstall the collection with the most recent version of the
  181. software.  This is probably the most recent collection you
  182. purchased.  Use the Add Picture Set Wizard to add any other
  183. collections, as well as any custom picture sets you've created.
  184.  
  185. If you reinstall Scenes but continue to get this message, you
  186. may be running an application that stores CTL3D.DLL in a
  187. different location than the \WINDOWS directory. To determine
  188. which application is using this file, close other applications
  189. you're using, and start Scenes again. If you are able to start
  190. Scenes without getting this message, the application that was
  191. running an older version of CTL3D.DLL is no longer running.
  192.  
  193. If you get the message "Unrecognized Error. Please
  194. reinstall Scenes" or "One or more files in the <name>
  195. picture set are damaged or missing"
  196. -----------------------------------------------------------
  197. This error message occurs when one or more files is erased or
  198. damaged while Scenes is active. This message will appear when the
  199. screen saver is activated or a wallpaper picture from a damaged
  200. picture set is selected. If the current picture set is a Scenes
  201. collection, reinstall the collection from the original disks.
  202. If the picture set is a custom picture set, remove it with the
  203. Remove Picture Set Wizard, and then add it again with the Add 
  204. Picture Set Wizard. If the custom picture set was from
  205. Genigraphics Corporation, add the picture set from the original
  206. disks.
  207.  
  208. If an application's password dialog box loses focus when you
  209. start Windows
  210. --------------------------------------------------------------
  211. Starting Windows automatically starts all applications with icons
  212. in the StartUp group, beginning with the icon in the top-left
  213. corner of the group. If an application with a password
  214. dialog box, such as Microsoft Mail or Microsoft Schedule+, has
  215. an icon before the Scenes icon in the StartUp group, you may 
  216. have to activate the application's Sign In dialog box before
  217. you can type your password. To correct this, move the Scenes
  218. icon to the top-left corner of the StartUp group.
  219.  
  220. If you cannot see part of the captions, wallpaper, or
  221. Picture Information window
  222. ------------------------------------------------------------
  223. Check to see that the vertical and horizontal alignment on your
  224. monitor are set properly. If you are using a high-resolution
  225. "virtual" display, you may need to pan up to see the captions
  226. or pan down and right to see the Picture Information window.
  227. To display your wallpaper correctly, pan until the wallpaper
  228. is centered on your screen.
  229.

  231. =============================================
  232. 3. Software Compatibility Issues
  233. =============================================
  234.  
  235. Running multiple screen savers
  236. ------------------------------
  237. If more than one screen saver is running at a time, unpredictable
  238. things can happen. Before starting another screen saver, including
  239. After Dark, make sure you exit Scenes. 
  240.  
  241. Starting the Scenes screen saver from the Windows Control Panel
  242. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  243. The Scenes screen saver is designed to run from the Scenes 
  244. application in Program Manager. If you start the Scenes screen
  245. saver from the Windows Control Panel, your settings will not be
  246. saved correctly, and many features will not be available.
  247. Instead, start Scenes from Program Manager, or, when you install
  248. Scenes, choose to start Scenes automatically with Windows.
  249.  
  250. After Dark
  251. ----------
  252. Make sure you do not have both the Scenes and the After Dark
  253. icons in your StartUp group. 
  254.  
  255. If you use Scenes modules with the Randomizer module, be sure
  256. to set the display time and duration to at least two minutes.
  257. If that still is not enough time to decompress and change
  258. Scenes pictures, you may need to increase the duration.
  259.  
  260. If you use the After Dark MultiModule, do not use it to
  261. run more than one Microsoft Scenes module at a time.
  262.  
  263. Intermission
  264. ------------
  265. Scenes After Dark modules will not run in Intermission 3.0.
  266.  
  267. ScreenCraze
  268. ------------
  269. Using the Preview feature in ScreenCraze while Scenes is running
  270. will freeze the screen saver and crash your system. In general,
  271. running more than one screen saver at a time can cause
  272. unpredictable results, including system crashes.
  273.  
  274. Windows version 3.1 or later
  275. -----------------------------
  276. If you are displaying wallpaper captions and you choose the Tile
  277. button in the Task List, Windows will leave a space open on your
  278. screen. If you don't want this space, clear the "Show Each
  279. Picture's Caption" checkbox in the Microsoft Scenes dialog box.
  280.  
  281. Windows NT
  282. ----------
  283. When running Scenes with Windows NT, the Keyboard QuickStart
  284. is not available.
  285.  
  286. MS-DOS version 6.0 or Central Point Software's PC Tools
  287. for Windows Delete Protection
  288. -------------------------------------------------------
  289. If you use the MS-DOS version 6.0 or if you use PC Tools
  290. Undelete option and the Sentry Tracker option, configure
  291. Data Sentry to exclude these files from those that Data
  292. Sentry protects: 
  293. MSSCENES.BMP. ~MSS*.BMP, and -*.TMP.
  294.  
  295. For details, consult your documentation for MS-DOS version 6.0
  296. or PC Tools for Windows.
  297.  
  298. Fonts
  299. -----
  300. Scenes uses TrueType fonts. For the proper fonts to display in
  301. the Picture Information window and the Microsoft Scenes online
  302. Help, you must install two of the TrueType fonts that ship
  303. with Windows version 3.1. These fonts are Arial and Times New
  304. Roman. Also, you must use the Fonts icon in the Control Panel 
  305. to enable TrueType fonts.
  306.  
  307. DOS sessions
  308. ----------------------------------
  309. if you are running a DOS session, the Scenes screen saver will
  310. not start automatically and the Keyboard QuickStart will not
  311. be active. If you don't run the DOS session full screen,
  312. however, you can use the Mouse QuickStart to start the Scenes
  313. screen saver.
  314.  
  315. Communications activity
  316. -----------------------
  317. If you are downloading files from CompuServe or anticipate 
  318. other prolonged communications or network-related activities,
  319. turn the screen saver option off. This will ensure that your
  320. connections are not interrupted unnecessarily when Scenes
  321. is running.
  322.  
  323. Desktop shells
  324. --------------
  325. If you are running a Windows desktop shell, do not install
  326. Scenes from a virtual screen or launch the Scenes icon as
  327. maximized.
  328.  
  329. If you are running from a shell, it might hide the Scenes
  330. wallpaper caption. Minimizing the desktop icon may correct
  331. this problem. If you cannot see the caption, you can view a
  332. picture's caption in the Picture Information window by
  333. choosing Picture Information from the Scenes Control menu.
  334.  
  335. If you use Central Point PC Tools for Windows, do not run
  336. utilities which run on a schedule, such as Anti-Virus,
  337. while the Scenes screen saver is active.
  338.  
  339. If you use Norton Desktop for Windows' Sleeper, it may
  340. change the Scenes wallpaper, even when the Scenes screen
  341. saver is turned off. To avoid this problem, choose the
  342. Keep Current Picture option in the Microsoft Scenes
  343. dialog box before exiting Scenes.
  344.  
  345. Graphics applications
  346. ---------------------
  347. If you are using an application that uses a lot of colors,
  348. such as a graphics application, the palette for the Scenes
  349. wallpaper may lose some of its colors, degrading the quality
  350. of the wallpaper. This may occur when you activate an
  351. application icon that includes many colors, too. 
  352.  
  353. This occurs because the windows of all applications, including
  354. your wallpaper, are trying to share the available colors. (Only
  355. 256 colors are available on an SVGA display.) The active window
  356. will determine the colors it needs for optimal display. Any
  357. other windows, including the wallpaper, will have to use this
  358. palette of colors. If you use graphics applications intensively
  359. and this presents a problem for you, you might choose not to run
  360. Scenes when you work.
  361.  
  362.  
  363. ============================================
  364. 4. Hardware Compatibility Issues
  365. ============================================
  366.  
  367. ATI Display Drivers
  368. -------------------
  369. Some versions of the ATI Ultra drivers with Crystal fonts
  370. have a bug that can cause a GPFault from within the Scenes
  371. online Help. If you're using one of these drivers, switch
  372. to any of the Ultra drivers that do not use these fonts.
  373.  
  374. The ATI Mach 32 driver also exhibits a couple of display-
  375. related problems, including a slight clipping of pictures
  376. on the left side of the screen.
  377.  
  378. If you are using a Mach 32 driver and you get a message
  379. in Setup or the Microsoft Scenes dialog box stating that
  380. you can make your pictures look better, open the Mach 32
  381. Control Panel (FlexDesk). Make sure that your screen
  382. resolution is set to 256 colors or more and that the
  383. 256-color palette has been turned on in the Advanced
  384. dialog box.
  385.  
  386. If you're using the Mach 32 driver in 640x480 mode, select
  387. the Small Font option. This will make the dialog boxes
  388. and Microsoft Scenes online Help easier to read.
  389.  
  390. If you are using any ATI driver with Crystal fonts, a message
  391. will appear in Scenes stating that you could make your pictures
  392. look better. To display Scenes with 256 colors, turn off
  393. Crystal fonts or select a driver without Crystal fonts.
  394.  
  395. Viper VESA Local Bus card
  396. -------------------------
  397. If you are using a Viper VESA driver and you get a message
  398. in Setup or the Microsoft Scenes dialog box stating that
  399. you could make your pictures look better, make sure that
  400. your screen resolution is set to 256 colors or more and
  401. that the 256-color palette has been turned on.
  402.  
  403. Diamond Speedstar 24X Display Driver
  404. ------------------------------------
  405. If you are using the WSP48024.DRV driver, you may get a
  406. GPFault in the driver if you use a custom picture with
  407. unusual proportions as Scenes wallpaper.
  408.  
  409. Microsoft Mouse Driver version 9.0 or later
  410. --------------------------------------------
  411. If Screen Wrap is selected, using the Mouse QuickStart
  412. option to activate the screen saver may be difficult.
  413.  
  414. Laptop computers with desktop docking stations
  415. ----------------------------------------------
  416. Some laptop computers that use desktop "docking stations" may
  417. be able to use a video card attached to the docking station.
  418. However, that card may offer resolutions that are not available
  419. when the laptop is used by itself. For example, when docked, 
  420. your computer may be able to display 256 colors; as a laptop,
  421. the same computer may be limited to 16 colors. Before removing
  422. the laptop from the docking station, change your display driver
  423. to one that the laptop is capable of using.
