  10. When running this demo, you should avoid using screen resolutions which 
  11. utilize Large Fonts. Although the demonstration will run on Large Font 
  12. resolutions, the accuracy of its automated mouse movements may be adversely 
  13. affected. This is because for Large Font screen resolutions, application 
  14. windows are proportioned differently. The SuperJAM! demo relies on fixed 
  15. window coordinates to orchestrate its mouse movements, and these coordinates 
  16. become altered in Large Font resolutions. For best results, use a standard 
  17. resolution.

  42. 1.0 - If You Encounter Sound Problems

  45. The SuperJAM! Demo Setup program tests your current sound configuration to 
  46. insure compatibility with the SuperJAM! Demo. If this test yields poor sound 
  47. results you can reconfigure your setup using the Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test. 
  48. Most sound problems which occur while running the SuperJAM! Demo can be 
  49. easily solved by running this test. It automatically configures the SuperJAM!
  50. Demo with the proper settings for your sound device.

  54. 1.1 - The Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test
  55. ------------------------------------

  57. The Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test is a quick and easy way to make sure the 
  58. SuperJAM! Demo is configured properly for use with your system. To run the 
  59. Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test, do the following:
  60.  
  61. 1. Start the SuperJAM! Demo by double-clicking on its icon in the SuperJAM!
  62. Demo Program Group.
  63.  
  64. 2. From any dialog box, click on the Stop button to halt the demonstration
  65. script.
  66.  
  67. 3. From the SuperJAM! Demo Help menu, select Test my sound card or MIDI 
  68. setup...  
  69.  
  70. 4. The test will ask you a series of questions which help to determine the 
  71. best sound configuration for use with the SuperJAM! demo.
  72.  
  73. When you have completed the Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test, close the SuperJAM! 
  74. Demo and then run it again. The SuperJAM! Demo should now perform properly,
  75. playing a variety of different musical instruments throughout the course of 
  76. the demonstration. If you run the Sound Card/MIDI Setup Test and still do not 
  77. hear any sound, you may not have the proper driver(s) installed for use with 
  78. your sound device. See section 3.0, "Installing Drivers," for more 
  79. information.

  83. 2.0 - The MIDI Mapper
  84. ---------------------

  86. SuperJAM!, by default, adheres to the General MIDI standard. In order to 
  87. insure sound device compatibility, SuperJAM! can be set to use the Windows 
  88. 3.1 MIDI Mapper to address your sound card or MIDI interface.  The MIDI 
  89. Mapper basically acts as a mediator between SuperJAM! and your sound device.

  91. NOTE: For best results, you should use the MIDI Mapper. However, you can 
  92. enable/disable SuperJAM!'s use of the MIDI Mapper by doing the following:
  93.  
  94. 1. From the SuperJAM! main window, open the Options menu.
  95.  
  96. 2. Select Global... ; the Global Options dialog box opens.
  97.  
  98. 3. You can enable/disable the MIDI Mapper by clicking in the Use MIDI Mapper
  99. checkbox.

  103. 2.1 - Configuring the MIDI Mapper
  104. ---------------------------------

  106. In order to set up the MIDI Mapper for use with SuperJAM! and your sound 
  107. device, do the following:
  108.     
  109. 1. Open up the Control Panel by double-clicking on the Control Panel icon 
  110. located in the Main program group in Windows.
  111.  
  112. 2. Open up the MIDI Mapper by double-clicking on the MIDI Mapper icon in the 
  113. Control Panel.  (If you do not see a MIDI Mapper icon in your Control Panel,
  114. you probably don't have the necessary driver(s) for your sound device 
  115. installed on your system. Refer to section 3.0 of this document titled, 
  116. "INSTALLING DRIVERS".)

  118. 3. Inside the MIDI Mapper dialog box, make sure the "Show" area has "Setups"
  119. selected, and then click on the New... button.
  120.  
  121. 4. Inside the New MIDI Setup dialog box, name the setup "SuperJAM! Setup" 
  122. and give it a short description, if you like.  Click on OK.
  123.  
  124. 5. Inside the MIDI Setup dialog box, go to the Port Name column and select 
  125. your sound device driver for all 16 of the boxes.  (Clicking in each of the
  126. boxes opens up a list of available output choices.)  This will direct all of
  127. SuperJAM!'s selected instruments to your sound device. If you do not see 
  128. your sound device driver listed in the available output choices, you 
  129. probably don't have the necessary driver(s) installed on your system. Refer 
  130. to section 3.0, "INSTALLING DRIVERS".
  131.  
  132. 6. When you have finished choosing output for all 16 Port Name boxes, click
  133. on OK and save the new setup when prompted to.
  134.  
  135. 7. In the MIDI Mapper dialog box, you will see the new setup listed in the 
  136. "Name:" combo box.  Close the MIDI Mapper and run SuperJAM!. If you now hear
  137. sound, but do not hear any drums playing, see the following section 2.2, 
  138. "REMAPPING DRUMS."

  142. 2.2 - Remapping Drums
  143. ---------------------

  145. If you hear sound coming from your sound device, but notice that there are 
  146. no drums playing, your sound device may transmit its drums on channel 
  147. 16 instead of 10.  (Channel 10 is the General MIDI standard channel for 
  148. drums, and is used by SuperJAM! by default. However, many sound cards use 
  149. channel 16, instead.)  You will need to account for this inside the MIDI 
  150. Mapper:

  152. 1. Go back into the Control Panel and double-click on the MIDI Mapper icon 
  153. to open up the MIDI Mapper.
  154.  
  155. 2. In the MIDI Mapper dialog box, make sure the "Show" area has "Setups" 
  156. selected, and that "SuperJAM! Setup" is selected in the "Name:" combo box. 
  157. (If you have not already created a setup for your sound device, you must 
  158. first do so before continuing. Refer to the previous section 2.1, 
  159. "Configuring The MIDI Mapper.")
  160.  
  161. 3. Click on the "Edit..." button.
  162.  
  163. 4. Inside the MIDI Setup dialog box, go to the Dest Chan column and change 
  164. 10 to 16.  This will remap the drum parts in SuperJAM! to channel 16 to 
  165. accomodate your sound card.
  166.  
  167. 5. Click OK, and then save the setup.
  168.  
  169. 6. Close the MIDI Mapper and run SuperJAM! You should now hear drums when 
  170. the music plays.

  174. 3.0 - Installing Drivers
  175. ------------------------
  176.  
  177. In order for your sound device to communicate with your computer, a device 
  178. driver for the device must be installed on your system.
  179.  
  180. Most sound devices include a disk which contains their device drivers. 
  181. Windows 3.1 also includes the most common device drivers, which may be 
  182. compatible with your sound device. If you do not have a driver for your 
  183. device or are not sure if the drivers you have are Windows compatible, 
  184. please contact the sound device manufacturer to obtain the latest versions.

  186. NOTE: If you are installing a new version of a device driver which currently
  187. resides on your system, you must first remove the old version before 
  188. installing the new one. Refer to section 3.2, "REMOVING DRIVERS" before 
  189. continuing with the new driver's installation.

  191. To install a device driver, do the following:
  192.  
  193. 1. Go to the Control Panel and double-click on the Drivers icon. A list of 
  194. installed drivers appears.  If you see your sound device driver listed, you 
  195. do not need to install it. If you do not see your device driver listed, go 
  196. to step 4.
  197.  
  198. 2. To view a list of device drivers provided with Windows 3.1, click on 
  199. Add... If you are using a Windows-supplied device driver, select the one you
  200. want to install and click OK. If you are not, select Add Unlisted Or Updated
  201. Driver and click OK. The Install driver dialog box appears. 
  202.  
  203. 3.  Insert the disk the driver is located on and click OK. Follow the 
  204. instructions to set up your device driver as needed, if applicable. Make 
  205. sure that the settings you specify do not conflict with the settings used by
  206. other drivers in your system.
  207.  
  208. For example, you may run into an interrupt conflict, where two or more 
  209. devices use the same interrupt setting. An interrupt conflict causes your 
  210. system to work improperly. Please check the documentation accompanying each 
  211. device to assure that your device settings do not create any problems.

  215. 3.1 - Changing Driver Settings
  216. ------------------------------

  218. If for some reason you need to alter your driver settings after you've 
  219. installed the driver, do so by going to the Control Panel again. Then double-
  220. click on the Drivers icon to view the list of installed drivers, and select 
  221. the driver you want to reconfigure. Click on Setup... and select the options
  222. as needed. Keep in mind the changes you make do not take effect until you 
  223. restart Windows.

  227. 3.2 - Removing Drivers
  228. ----------------------

  230. You may wish to remove a device driver from the Installed Drivers list if
  231. you are not using the device any longer. Removing a driver from the list 
  232. does not remove the device driver file from your hard disk, so if you ever 
  233. need to use the device later, you will not need to install the driver again.

  235. You may not install an updated version of a driver that is already installed
  236. on your system. You must first remove the old driver. If you do not do this,
  237. you will receive an error message when trying to install the new one. 
  238.  
  239. To remove a driver, double-click on the Drivers icon in the Control Panel. A
  240. list of the currently installed drivers appears. Select the driver you want
  241. to remove and click Remove. Once again, you need to restart Windows for this
  242. change to take effect immediately.
