  23. Nikon II  is a utility for capturing the displayed desktop or portions thereof, 
  24. and saving the image captured in a bitmap. Either the whole desktop (screen 
  25. contents), windows for selected applications, a selected region or the contents 
  26. of a window can be captured. The result can be saved in the clipboard for 
  27. subsequent pasting into another application, printed at varying resolutions, 
  28. stored on disk in a number of bitmap file formats or a specified editor can be 
  29. invoked for further processing of the image.

  31. Nikon II  exists as an icon. A capture or 'snap' is initiated by 
  32. double-clicking on this icon. Alternatively, select Snap from the pop-up system 
  33. menu. 
  34.  
  35. The type of capture, together with operational settings, can be changed by 
  36. single-clicking with the left or right mouse button and selecting Options from 
  37. the pop-up system menu. 
  38.  
  39. If a delayed capture is specified, a count of the remaining seconds to the 
  40. capture will be shown below the Nikon II  icon. Select Stop countdown to 
  41. terminate a delayed capture. 
  42.  
  43. Once the capture is complete, the image will be output to the selected 
  44. destination. A status of working indicates that processing of the image is 
  45. incomplete. The time for this processing will depend on the options selected. 
  46. Note that another capture can be initiated whilst in the working status but 
  47. processing and output of the second image is queued.

  52. details on registering your copy of this program.

  54. Select Close from the system menu to terminate the program. The current capture 
  55. options will be saved for subsequent execution.

  58. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Tips on usage ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  59.  
  60. The following tips on Nikon II  usage may be helpful: 
  61.  
  62. o Place a shadow of the Nikon II  application in the Startup folder to have it 
  63.   available at all times. Resource usage for Nikon II  is negligible whilst 
  64.   inactive. 
  65.  
  66. o Set the Delayed snap option to give you time to arrange the desktop and 
  67.   pointer for the capture. 
  68.  
  69. o Choose the Application(s) source to capture all windows of the selected 
  70.   applications and exclude others from the background. 
  71.  
  72. o When capturing by Application(s), Window frame or Window client ensure that 
  73.   the window(s) selected is/are not partially obscured by other windows as the 
  74.   overlapped areas may form part of the captured image. 
  75.  
  76. o Select file format of CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format for best 
  77.   compression. OS/2 2.x bitmap and Tagged Image File Format offer acceptable 
  78.   image compression. 
  79.  
  80. o Large prints at higher resolution will use a lot of system memory. If you 
  81.   experience problems (eg. thrashing), drop the resolution and/or proportion of 
  82.   the page. If your printer supports a number of dpi settings, choose a lower 
  83.   value.

  88. Refer to the Description for general help on this program.

  90. Use the Options dialog to select the source and destination for the capture. 
  91.  
  92. The source can be either the Desktop (entire screen contents), all windows for 
  93. selected Application(s), a selected Region or a selected Window frame or Window 
  94. client. 
  95.  
  96. Both Desktop and Application(s) sources will result in a screen size capture 
  97. being taken. For a Desktop capture, the current (or delayed) desktop contents 
  98. will form the resultant image. For Application(s) captures, only those windows 
  99. belonging to the selected application(s) will be captured and the background 
  100. will be blanked out.

  102. When a Region, Window frame or Window client capture is initiated, the status 
  103. will change to selecting and a pointer displayed to enable a region or window 
  104. to be selected. For a Region capture, position the top left-hand corner of the 
  105. box displayed and click the left mouse button, then size the box and click the 
  106. left mouse button again. The inclosed area will form the captured image. For 
  107. Window frame or Window client captures, move the four arrow mouse pointer over 
  108. the window desired and click the left mouse button. The whole window or client 
  109. area will form the captured image.

  111. Note that dialog windows must be captured with the Window frame option. 
  112.  
  113. The output destination can be either the clipboard, a specified editor, a file 
  114. on disk or a specified print queue. 
  115.  
  116. Selecting Clipboard will place the image in the system clipboard in a standard 
  117. format for subsequent pasting into another application. 
  118.  
  119. A destination of Editor will place the image into the clipboard as above and 
  120. then invoke a specified bitmap editor for further processing of the image. The 
  121. editor path and parameters are specified in the Editor Options dialog. 
  122.  
  123. Selecting File will save the image in a file on disk. The file name and format 
  124. are specified in the File Options dialog. 
  125.  
  126. Selecting Printer will print the captured image. The printer queue, resolution 
  127. and layout can be changed in the Printer Options dialog. 
  128.  
  129. For desktop captures, a timed delay can be set to allow rearrangement of the 
  130. screen contents. Select Stop countdown from the system menu to abort delayed 
  131. captures. 
  132.  
  133. Additionally, the pointer icon (cursor) can be included in Desktop or 
  134. Application(s) captures. Select Add border to enclose the captured image with a 
  135. line border.

  137. Select Prompt for options to display the Options dialog when each capture is 
  138. initiated. 
  139.  
  140. Press More to change options for the currently selected destination. 
  141.  
  142. Press OK to accept these changes or Cancel to ignore changes and exit with 
  143. original settings.

  146. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Editor options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  148. The Editor options dialog allows qualification of the default bitmap editor 
  149. path name and parameters. 
  150.  
  151. If the Editor destination is selected on the Options dialog, the bitmap editor 
  152. specified will be invoked at the completion of the capture. The image will be 
  153. transferred to the editor via the clipboard. Specify the complete path name to 
  154. the editor and (optionally) parameters to be passed. The bitmap editor invoked 
  155. could be the system Icon Editor (for small images) or any Picture Editor 
  156. equivalent. This option permits immediate post-processing of the image.

  158. Press OK to accept these changes or Cancel to ignore changes and return to main 
  159. options dialog with original settings.

  164. If the File destination is selected in the Options dialog, the image will be 
  165. saved on disk in a file with the name given and in the format specified. 
  166. Specify the full path name to the output file. If the file name ends with a 
  167. sequence number (eg. SNAP0123.BMP) the number component can be automatically 
  168. incremented on each capture to permit a series of files to be retained.

  170. Select the desired format for the output file from the list given. Note that 
  171. the OS/2 2.x format may not be accepted by older applications. 
  172.  
  173. Press OK to accept these changes or Cancel to ignore changes and return to main 
  174. options dialog with original settings.

  177. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Printer options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  179. If the Printer destination is selected in the Options dialog, the captured 
  180. image will be printed. 
  181.  
  182. Specify the Queue for the print. The default printer, form etc for this queue 
  183. will be used. 
  184.  
  185. A choice of low, medium and high resolution can be set to control output print 
  186. quality, with high resolution offering maximum quality. 
  187.  
  188. Select a Border percentage to leave a blank edge along all sides of the page. 
  189. The value specified is a percentage of the page width and height. 
  190.  
  191. Select the Area percentage to limit the output size. The value specified is a 
  192. percentage of the total page area. Note that the image printed may be smaller 
  193. in area than that specified if it would otherwise overlap the border above. 
  194. This value is ignored if the Print to scale option is selected. 
  195.  
  196. For fine tuning the output, the relative Color bias percentages can be changed 
  197. to lighten/darken areas of the image depending on the red/green/blue intensity 
  198. of the original. A higher bias will result in a lighter tone for areas of that 
  199. color. Additionally, the overall intensity can be changed by setting the 
  200. desired Brightness. Position the slider arm at the desired position.

  202. The Print to scale option will print the captured image at the same scale as 
  203. shown on the screen. Exact sizing will depend on display and driver but 
  204. individual print proportions will be a constant. If the scaled image exceeds 
  205. the page size (with border) it will be reduced to fit.

  207. The Color option will generate color output for printers (with appropriate 
  208. drivers) supporting this capability.

  210. Press OK to accept these changes or Cancel to ignore changes and return to main 
  211. options dialog with original settings.

  216. The Setup will appear when Nikon II  is started, only if the name of the 
  217. Desktop application has been changed from the default. 
  218.  
  219. Select the current name from the list given. The default was OS/2 2.0 Desktop.

  221. Press OK to accept the selected entry.

  224. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. How to register ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  225.  
  226. This version of Nikon II  is provided with an unlimited evaluation license not 
  227. exceeding 21 days in duration from first use. Unregistered use beyond this 
  228. evaluation period is in violation of this license. 
  229.  
  230. If you find this program useful and would like to license your copy, a fee of 
  231. AUD $65 (approx. USD $49) for individual use or AUD $250 (approx. USD $190) for 
  232. corporate use is payable. This amount will entitle you (or your corporation) to 
  233. full use of current and subsequent releases of the product plus support via 
  234. CompuServe.
